so the campaign mode has the same problem Wargame Air Land Battle and Red Dragon does, not enough time meaning there is a optimal route to win and deviation from that reduces your chance to succeed, severely limiting playability of the campaigns. it's especially obvious in the Korea scenario of Red Dragon, you have this chance of having the war bounce back and forth on the peninsula grinding out in a war of attrition like the actual korean war, only there's so little time allotted that falling back on the first turn means you concede the campaign.
By far this is the best WW2 RTS for PC. The idea has been around for many years to make a multi-scale game, like total war series, for WW2. I think Eugene did a great job in making a tactical level RTS game, in the scale of battalion, but they have a long way to make a real campaign level game (in the scale of regiment or division). I would love to support their project and I hope all other WW2 war-gamers do so. It would be very cool if one day Paradox and Eugene can cooperate on an Epic game that incorporates HOI4 and SD2. For me that would be the ultimate WW2 strategy war game.
I mean between ww2 and Napoleon there is a strategy difference as battles werent fought that way, playing Total war Napoleon would be more realistic then having a game in this style while playing some Total war WW2 would be bad as it focuses on the regiments not groups/ one units like tanks etc
@Andris Falks Exactly. Add historical events, research tree maybe generals, faction leaders and diplomacy. There you go, easy money for companies and gamers are happy!
Great stuff as always! My only gripe with these games is the measurements in battles are a bit squashed, 100 metres is way to short to be 100 metres...If that makes sense...
You didn't mention the main attraction of breakthrough, to me at least: the defender can deploy defensive structures, such as HMG and AT bunkers, trenches, barbed wire, and gun pits. This means the battle becomes a true attack / defense, and is really enjoyable to play imo.
If you guys haven't, check out WarGame: Red Dragon, it's by the same developers, it takes place during the Cold War so you'll be using modern weapon systems. The learning curve is steep but it is honestly one of the greatest and most in depth RTS I've ever played. Graphics are good too.
They should add some kind of custom campaign "sandbox" mode where You can "create" units Yourself, without time/turn limits and with custom map locations You can upload and create in some sort of editor. I don't think it would be that resource expensive for them...
Yes but it would impact sales of their DLC. In none of thier games they've ever really been that supportive of mods. They added workshop to SD1, but what could be modded was limited at best.
Man i love the idea of a Total War style campaign but with WW2 or modern military units. I think this game looks good but it doesnt look polished enough for 40$. Great video as always
Its cool to see a kind of Total War in a WW II setting , looks good ! I actually like the campaign map feel and look unlike the map from "Hell Let Loose" which just looks uneasy to look at. Shame there is no multiplayer campaign , looks like it could have been great fun with more people.
Two years later & Eugen Systems have added Vs & Co-Op modes to the Army General campaign. Both are a ton of fun but having a match with up to five people on your team is amazing. The AI isn't the most challenging, but then I've been playing SD2 solidly for two years now & remember it was tough to begin with.
the Wargame engine does one thing really well, showing maneuver warfare, it doesn't cope well with cities at all. you'd be better off with something like COD2 if you want a feel for Stalingrad.
Not quite Total War. In Total War even if you're playing as the losing faction historically, you can still come out as the supreme victor at the end and write off your own history.
Verry nice review , I bought this game because the graphics is much better compare to the first one. There is no game like this in the market , so why not to buy if the gameplay is awesome and like nothing I have not seen before.
Same, people are just too nitpicking by asking the developers to add tons of unreasonable or unrealistic features to the game. The game already have a solid foundation and the dedicated competitive scene in this game is nothing to sneeze at, tons of veterans players playing this game at any given time so the learning curve is not an issue at all.
@@BeyondDM War Game: red dragon is made by the same company and is set during the cold war. But it doesnt have this kind of campaign (multiplayer and skirmish is best).
Great idea, but the battles feel a little arcade like, the pace is unrealistically fast resulting in a click fest, not to mention the AI obviously getting large spotting bonuses, so many times AI artillery would target my troops in a building 2km away with a huge forest in between and no spotters, looking forward to seeing what modders can do with it.

It was a problem In the first game. But i think less so. Atleast with friends. Now that its so huge of a map. I feel like no forest. Treeline. Route trough different trees matters anymore like In the old game. The forests dont feel like forests. The Villages and towns dont feel like towns. Just small farmhouses row after another. And i think alot of these are To blame for the Eastern front itself. And for the direction Eugen decided To Take the game.
I don't like frontline mechanic. Also they could have made a tutorial campaign both at the begining of timeline and also we could learn about the campaign without difficulty.
The complexity of army general gets to me. I think I'd prefer a much larger front but instead commanding divisions rather than regiment's, but incorporate regiment's into those divisions that fight WITH the division and not apart of it. Focusing on operation bagration was also a weird thing for them to do. I would've preferred Barbarossa, and multiple fronts like the north and the siege of Leningrad, the gates of Moscow, and the defense of Stalingrad cut off from German reinforcements. Showing the technological advantage the Germans had at the start, their superior weaponry, but ultimately how overextended they are, giving the Soviets too much time to adapt and counter them. You could control the German offensive, before switching sides and pushing the Germans back. Or, going alt history and Germany succeeding in Barbarossa, pushing the Russians beyond the urals. I'm also disappointed the game didn't feature the infamous Russian winter, as it played a major role in disorganising the German line. It's why I prefer company of heroes 2, as it did a much better job showing the aforementioned "realism of war" on the Eastern front than SD2 ever could, and company of heroes is just an arcade level RTS! If they add it as DLC, I will be very disappointed in their marketing practice.
