I think ian madigan was spot on. We lack blistering pace, got to get baloucoune, zac ward, ethan mcilroy and the likes of postlethwaite and hugh gavin into the fold.
madigan is really good, very insightful and, clear and to the point. Im frankly surprised how good he is, sort of thought he'd be another luke fitz, shite talking abd rambling about nothing, but nope! Mad's is a breath of fresh air.
If Crowley gets injured before the England game, how the narrative will change. It’s not a debate anymore that you need to incorporate more of a player rotation once you have an established strong team, based on RSA evolution. That said it’s great that we are not happy being second best and that we are looking at all area for improvement. Sitting around patting our selves on the back will only see us fall back into the pack. Casey needs to start, JGP off the bench and we should bring in two other young 9s (one squad and 1 development). Paddy Patterson, Ben Murphy, Nathan Doak and Matthew Devine all should get opportunities to step up. I like that Jack Boyle was in but he didn’t do enough to get ahead of Healy, it’s only a matter of time but Ireland should also look at Sam Illo. We also need to look at no.7 and 13 for depth. I would look at Coombs again as Doris at 7 will add serious power and a much improved age profile to the back row. Lots of depth at 6. I’m looking forward to Edwin Edogbo being back and getting a run of games, him and Joe will offer serious sustained power in the tight head lock position. Furlong, Sheehan and Conan injuries in this campaign, JGP’s injury and Hugo’s absence in the summer were great in hindsight sight. Furlong, Bealham, Oli Jager and Tom Clarkson represent 4 tight head props from 3 provinces. It’s a slower transition then some teams but look at how bad it’s gone in England, Australia, Wales when they have to transition too fast, all the IP gets lost and can take years or never gets replaced. I like the way Ireland treat senior players, there is such pride and respect. Ireland are transitioning too, at a more control Ed and gradual nature. Consolidation and then hopefully advancement as settled players strive to excel.
not enough explosive carriers in the pack (conan and sheehan were missed, beirne should be at lock), and not enough speed among the backs. on an ulster note - izuchukwu, timoney, augustus will make a formidable carrying back line
O’Connor saying that Farrell is the one who created the media hype is utter garbage, especially coming from that fan boy with a pen and a platform. He personally has done more than any other rugby journalist to create the hype.
Do you think he’s trying to cover his tracks, he also singled out Crowley for being terrible in South Africa, I genuinely think that’s a disgraceful comment to make, they were absolutely bruising encounters… Like has anyone ever said Johnny was terrible when he was nullified because we were challenged up front in test matches and eeked out wins… I found it a seriously strange comment to make!
@@eddiecarbide Agree 100%. You're comparing apples to oranges when it comes to the front eight. Let Crowley play behind the Leinster front eight on a good day and he'll blow everyone away.
He's lost the plot entirely with regard to Prendergast and is still at it on this pod. Madigan gives a very fair and balanced evaluation of both Crowley and Prendergast in the game, which highlights how Crowley is still ahead in multiple areas, then O'Connor starts talking about Prendergast being 10 for the Six Nations and that Crowley can be a good 22 or even 12. He's usually a bit overstated with certain players but he's taken it to the extreme these last weeks. Is he related to Prendergast? Invested in him? Attracted to him? WTF is going on with him?
I really don’t understand why they think a player would be dented or lose confidence because they were selected on the bench instead of starting. Is there a mentality in Ireland where if you are on the bench, you are seen as not as good? Regardless that Ireland are clearly trying to develop more than one player who can play at 10? e.g. if JGP is selected on the bench ahead of Casey, does this mean Casey is seen as better? IMO he was on the bench because Ireland clearly need to develop more players and he is the best 10 so is more like an insurance policy on the bench in case a very young, inexperienced player doesn’t do so well, similar to what SA do with Pollard even though he is the best 10. I found this whole discourse around the selection of SP vs Crowley frankly ridiculous. You can’t properly develop players against Fiji, Japan, etc, they need to be tested in a high pressure match to see if they have it.
You have this spot on I think. SA have developed a mindset for using the bench as a tactic against whomever they play and you need players to buy into that to win games over the long run. At the end of the day, a 35-man squad lifts the cup, not 15 players. You also have to have balls to put less experienced players in in at least moderate games and put them with experience, that's not easy to do but Ireland can do that as they have enough experience in the team already.
to be fair, you are right, yet, O'Conner has insights that come out of the actual camp, hes always got some inside take, some inside information, regardless how he gets it, hes got people talking to him from inside for sure! And he's hear that there's ripples around that selection in particular. So its deffo a thing, with that said, you are spot on mate, developing more 10 options is not only good for us its frankly a priority, i honestly cannot remember a time going into a world cup since David Humphries and ogara that we had 2 decent tens never mind its looking like we might actually have 3 vey good options with frawley. Players need to man up and not get their noses out of joint cos someone was selected ahead, its for the good of the country and the team not their egos!
Who pays the Lions coach? Is it the IRFU our a separate contract, similar question for how the players get remunerated for the series? Lions is something special and anyone given the chance to coach or play would do it so maybe there is no change in earnings.
Wow, saying Crowley was terrible in South Africa is up there with the most terrible Matt Williams takes!! Serious revisionist stuff! I had to go back and hear it again… whether he said he was or wasn’t terrible…
Frankly conor, ya think munster have a bit more on their plate at the moment, for example, the entire system is being run by a bunch of bloody eedjits. I'd worry more about that if i were you.
Rud's reputation is going to fall off a cliff at this rate....but apparently Farrell is fuelling the blue media bus and he can't be held accountable as the driver 🙄
Best Irish pod, rte a close second, VM is for sure the worst. English pods pretty good. NZ is alright. SA pods are the best. But this is great for pure irish rugby
prendergast is not enough of a threat with the ball in hand, defences can choose to ignore him. he's ross byrne with a bit more finesse. still think frawley is the guy - i hate that he flubbed it against nz.
Disappointed by this. If you’re suggesting predictability needs to change, why try to being in a 10, who clearly has worked on playing like Sexton, who became far too predictable? Mix it up, I say! Otherwise, nothing changes.

Ian provides excellent analysis
Baird, is not Tom Ahern. I'd expect Ahern to come in and fix the lineout.
Baird is another big tall athletic guy in the lineout, every little helps.
Osbourne at full back and Keenan on the wing...love it Mags!
Which wing is that ?
Would be great to get Andy Dunne on the podcast!
Not too much, Andy is up his own backside a bit too much. And Madigan is excellent, had't expected how good he'd be.
Isn't he on 'off the ball' already?
ian madigan's insights are very deep and very interesting. As opposed to Fitzgerald waffeling on the other pod Mad's knowledge is excellent
Agreed, I said the same thing last week.

Gutted Timoney didn't get a run out. His physicality around the defence and ball carrying is awesome.
Something it felt like Ireland missed
Conan missed , ? he's not getting a look in ,they are going to lose him ,he's as good as Doris on his day,, but he's not even on the panel.
What happened to Nash?? He had an excellent Six Nations and defo has the moves, speed and ability in the air. Is he injured?
Out of favour it seems. He played well in SA also. Surprised to see Hansen walk back on to the team. Shows you Farrell's form talk is just nonsense.

Hansen was far better than Lowe all November I thought? Rud coming out with some weird takes for the last month.
Lineout needs to be thrown in quicker, it builds up too much pressure on the hooker and limits the options we can show to the opposition
When I see Ruds, out come the ear buds
He's the Irish Gary Neville
