1) Strongly agreed regarding the female minifig head situation. I remember being so overjoyed when I first saw that one female print in Exo-Force, it still feels surreal to see how many cute and cool heads we can choose from nowadays. 2) I've already joked with my sibling about how the new yellow is "The Kamen Rider Zero-One Color", but learning it even glows under blacklight just like him makes me wish for more minifig parts in it!
Want to laud your digression about diversity and changing times as being a stand out point. Even if it comes from a marketing/contrived place, the girls growing up with Lego these days will see themselves better represented in the hobby. That's a net positive in my mind. Stay based, Slugger :)
Quite fitting sendoff, as the most melancholic UV light tends to be the sun creeping into the disco at the break of signaling the party's end, and it winds down real fast.
4:20 As a building toy, Lego was still primarily geared toward boys even in the late 90s. So, not surprisingly, most sets had the male characters that most boys preferred. As far as the Friends set though, thanks for recommending it because it was completely off my radar and seeing it now, I think it is unusual and totally cool. I'm going to purchase one up now. Thanks again.
If I already wasn't sad enough hearing about trans neon green and orange being retired you show the Spock death seen. You monster! Great video, can't wait to build that arcade on my daughter's birthday.. I bought one "for her".
Even as a cynical gesture from a megacorp, representation, especially of those who are disabled, is incredibly important for children. For young children to see disabled minifigures in wheelchairs or without limbs amongst their other able bodied figures goes a long way in normalizing those people to them. The “othering” of disabled people is a very important matter, and it’s honestly commendable that a global brand such as lego is taking steps to minimize it, motivations be damned.
RIP Trans-Neon-Green. I didn't know it was being retired! This is another kick I'm the gut after we lost Trans-Neon-Orange! I wish they had kept these colors instead of the others. I wonder if these colors were too expensive to make. M-Tron, Blacktron II, and Ice Planet MOCs can only be made with used parts now. That arcade is indeed a good send off to the color! I love your videos since I never knew before that some LEGO colors glow under black light. Although I don't have one to try it out for myself.
honestly as a kid I always associated trans-neon orange and trans-neon green as lego colors, it makes me so sad that Lego is getting rid of these beautiful colors that add a lot of pop to any build.
@@jerbpickle175 Hopefully *distant* future. Even though Trans Bright Green seems to be the successor here, Trans Neon Green has still been included in nearly double the number of sets, meaning that there’s a huge supply of parts out there. 😊
Slugger, from the bottom of my heart, i just want to say thank you. I’m 20, and have used TH-cam since i was in 1st grade, so i’ve seen many styles and channels come and go. In this age of Shorts, I just find that i’m struggling to keep the most inspired and touching videos on my radar. Often, rubbish gets pushed so hard that it’s hard to find the good. I found your channel around a month ago, and i’ve watched most of the videos on your channel since. such amazing production value, a unique and comforting personality, and as someone who grew up in the 2000s, i really find your Lego opinions very different from my own, but so refreshing!! sorry, if there are any typos, i don’t mean to go on and on. i need to eat my lunch before work and watch this video. but although i’m a new fan, your channel means so much to me. thank you for your work!! it’s on the level of art in my heart
Sets like this make me realize how underrated certain Friends sets are. They have some really neat stores, houses and buildings to potentially fill up a LEGO City, especially with how LEGO City can get overboard with their action oriented sets like police and fire at times. The mini-dolls aren't my cup of tea either. But their better than whatever Belville was. At least the hair pieces are interchangeable with standard LEGO figures.
I haven't touched a Lego set since about 1998 but I somehow got into reading about it over the past few years, and I started watching Lego content on here even more recently. Your channel came up as a recommendation like a month ago and I gotta say I love what you're doing and I see how hard you're working to make your videos as good as they are. Those stop motion animations are just 🔥🔥🔥. Much love + looking forward to the next one.
it’s so refreshing to hear a lego youtuber who doesn’t focus on lego friends praise it, especially since most afols who prefer older sets shoot it down as “bad modern lego” without giving it a chance. Anyway i remember trans neon green fondly as a part of lego elves (another theme that had minidolls, sadly retired now RIP) being a main color for one of the villains; because of that me & my sibling always called it “ghost green”
Wow! After stumbling across your Rock Raiders content tonight, I'm excited to delve into your other work! And as a trans person who was watching partially because it kept me from looking at the news...it truly means a lot to see you signaling that this is a safe place. Now to find somewhere in my apartment where I can set up a display for Axle and her Chrome Crusher!
I loved how you were distracted by the tangents lol. Lego colors, friends theme, diversity, girl minifigures, the friends set, vectrex. I haven't related to someone like this in a long time 😂
I've long been a friends convert, and their pretty consistent dedication to diversity in their sets feels less corporate and more deliberate, as it's been ongoing and growing since the rebrand in 2016(?), that said, I do wish Minidolls had a BIT more life and posability to them, but the set designs, especially buildings and graphic designs for stickers are always TOP NOTCH. Great review!
Slugger i just adore your videos! Your commentary is, as always, truly insightful! I especially love the thoughtful commentary on diversity in lego, not something many touch on. Keep on slugging!
When I became a lego friends fan about a year ago all youtube comments seemed to hate the minidolls and the friends theme. It's nice that more people are starting to catch up on how well done some of these sets are. Hope you have a good time building the theater, that set is also amazing!
Another great video! I love these videos that highlight a color's history, also the Star Trek II bit was wonderful. Thank you for making our days a bit better with your fun and interesting videos.
While I don’t love minidolls I actually think they could be really cool to include in minifig focused sets, the only time we’ve seen this was in the Lego Movie 2 sets. Their taller proportions could really work for tall non human characters like the Navi from the new Avatar sets or the Kaminoans from Star Wars! It’s a super missed opportunity! Also on the diversity thing, I think it’s ultimately harmless and if anything a net positive, potentially helping kids of all backgrounds feel included and welcome! The thing you mentioned about a lack of female minifigs is definitely the most obvious example, I’ve had a ton of friends who were raised female who were interested in Lego growing up but weren’t allowed to get any sets as their parents saw it as a “boys toy”, products like Lego Friends actually turned that around and lets them actually give it a shot. Ultimately making these types of decisions are more of a bandaid then a real solution to closed minded parents, but I’d much rather kids have some chance at playing with Lego then no chance
If anything, Lego’s diversity approach comes from a genuine place of wanting all kids to feel included. Even with the boys and girls-specific theme over the years, Lego’s appeal has been to be a toy for everyone to enjoy, no matter the theme. It’s a better, modern way to expand that approach to everyone, no matter what race, orientation, or disability they may have.
As a big FRIENDS fan I will admit this is one of best Friends sets created. It has actual space inside, has very well thought features and details and all that was in nicely priced set! HOWEVER! I would wait for DREAMZZZ to come. A dream beased theme surely will have some neons :D
Man, this hurts. Trans neon green is one of my favorite Lego colors. From spaceships and lightsabers to rock monsters and power crystals, it was a mainstay in so many of my favorite themes. Sad to see it go. Trans bright green just isn’t the same...
as somebody who works around books, I'm relating heavily to the tangent about welcoming diversity even if corporate diversity is ultimately cynical, just there to check more boxes, sell to more demographics. it's good for folks to have options and see a little of themselves in something they love! and overall I'm so envious of your ability to make tangents like that feel natural in a video that, on the surface, is just about a lego color. invisible transitions into tangential topics are such a hard thing to do well; and doing it well can lead to a really good sorta conversational tone, like you're just listening to somebody talking about something they find cool! which is exactly the energy a channel devoted to a hobby should have, and something so many of them lack (and this goes for every hobby, mind; my favorite gaming, book or music channels have the same strengths. it's just wild to see those strengths exhibited so well by somebody who's only been making videos for about a year)
WOW! thrilled to see a reference to a vectrex. I got one probably a little over 20 years ago when i first heard of them and you're right videos do them no justice.
Related to retired colors. What retired color do you think makes the most sense to revive, and which would you like to be revived the most? For me, those are sand red and sand purple, respectively. They're so wonderfully pleasant - not too bright or too dull, and I think they work amazingly paired with Dark Red and the more modern Dark Purple. Not only that, but sand red would just be a useful color in general. It could be made into the masonry bricks for an old brick house where dark red would be too bold, it's perfect for Light Gray Terracotta (and the old Netherrack texture) for Minecraft Mesa sets, in Star Wars, and as a nice semi-neutral color for lots of sets. It would also bolster the limited amount of red colors - we currently only have red and dark red, after all, plus transparent red. Sand purple, as gorgeous as it is, isn't quite as useful. Purple isn't a common color in nature or in Lego outside of Friends, and it's maybe a little close to one of the lavenders. You'd have to intentionally work it into a design for Friends or Monkie Kid or Ninjago, either as a central color, or as an analogous contrast color for Dark Purple. I think you could use the different sand colors together pretty well too for a muted rainbow, alongside dark tan in place of yellow, and maybe Medium Nougat in place of Orange.
I get this question a lot, and honestly I’m of the opinion that it was a minor miracle that we ever got Dark Turquoise back. Frankly, I seriously doubt we will get another retired colour again. ☹️ With that being said, in a perfect world I’d like to see the original Purple come back! ❤️
@@RRSlugger Sadly, you're probably right. A gal and a slug can dream, I suppose. Dark Turquoise probably made the most sense to bring back in my opinion, as the cyan wedge of the color wheel doesn't really have many options, even with its inclusion. It's also just a really nice, useful color, and its return was a crowd pleaser too, as both Bionicle and Rock Raiders MOC builders seem to be enjoying the new options, and the increased availability of old ones.
I totally agree, I’d love to see a return of sand red! Out of all the older colors I think it’s the most aesthetically pleasing, and it’s a niche that isn’t currently filled by anything else. I don’t know if Lego would bring it back though considering their current focus on vibrant colors.
Doubling on the Sand Red and old Purple, I think they were very pleasing colors that had their own character and stand out next to their contemporaries. That being said, I also wonder why trans neon orange/green specifically had to be axed anyway; yeah they have alternatives, but not necessarily replacements, I think. However, that's not something I can say for a lot of LEGO's *NEW* colors; have you seen how many different shades of blue, light purple, and even green they have now? I question why we even need so many - not only are a lot of them extremely similar in use (like the different shades of lilac/purple, etc), some of them are just kind of ugly (light aqua). Those are colors that I'd argue had way more of a reason to be shafted, rather than the two trans neon colors, but that's just me.
I might have to pick up that arcade set. I was enticed by the parts. The nice mix of colors seems to make for a good parts pack, if nothing else. I'm always on the hunt for purple.
After watching this video, I now deeply wish to see you and Technology Connections collaborate on a video! Even if it's not exclusively Lego related, your commentary is always interesting and informative!
You mentioned the change to the grays; I always felt that the old grays were better for organic stuff, the new ones are better for stuff that's supposed to be metal, such as most Star Wars sets. Either one can work for rocks, it just depends on how much metal content you picture the rocks having. and you may not be that big on minidolls, but that's no call to torture them with that scene! "I have been... and always shall be... your friend! Live long... and prosper."
This is one of my favourite videos you have made, despite going all over the place you always came back to the trans neon green topic central to this video.
Thank you! Honestly, I'm really, really pleased with how this one turned out, despite it being rather scatterbrained. I think there's a nice pace/flow to everything. 😊
Love this homage to a beautiful colour. In my RR stop motion, I learned how much it pops under a blue LED light-an effect that the new bright trans green just doesn’t replicate.
One thing I feel worth mentioning is constraction’s usage of these neon colours. Almost every wave used neon yellow and orange for the brain stocks or eyes of bionicle characters. They even eventually just stopped doing the non neon brainstocks. Light just passed through these colours much better so they were much more ideal.
My only problem with the mini dolls is the maneuverability, like the hands don't twist and the legs don't move separately TwT, also really love both the trans neon colors and makes me sad that they are going away. Also the Vector machine is wicked cool!
I know you aren’t a fan of mars mission, but trans neon green was super integral to the crystalien spacecraft and as a result, the color will always hold a special place in my heart.
Honestly I really love the friends sets as a. Adult man. They frequently have life and color and that creative jolt that I prefer in Lego sets. Standard city sets today are a touch too realistic much of the time for my taste.
I like how the videos lately have not been afraid to go way off topic. Somehow it's making the videos even better. Feel free to take the video wherever the slug you want :P
It’s rewarding to take a risk with a video script like this and see it pay off and somehow become a cohesive video in the end. Thanks for giving me confidence to try it again in the future! 😊
the rock raiders color palette has fallen, Trans-neon green, Trans-neon Orange, Chrome Silver, Light Gray and Dark Gray. Friends gone too soon, you will be missed 😔.
I believe that is just Trans Bright Green, rather than Trans Neon Green. Tough to tell from the render though. Unlikely that they would keep a colour around for a single piece in a single set though! 😅
@@RRSlugger I found it online! It was Jabba's Sail Barge 6210 from 2006. I think the piece was used to store frogs for Jabba to eat. I still have all the figures somewhere, but the pieces are all strewn throughout boxes in the garage.
100% agree with the masc/fem diversity, I SO wish we had a girl on the power miners team, which was the theme I played with the most as a kid!! We had 4 dudes that looked similar and they couldn't even decide which face prints to use. I remember being so pleasantly surprised when I learned that Jet existed on the rock raiders crew, even though that was out of my era she still holds a nice little place in my heart that I knew kid me would have loved to feel represented :) I guess the cool thing about Lego though is that I can now make my own, I have a mechanic that I include with my power miners sets that has doc's outfit except with dark grey hands, dark blue toolbox, and MINI HEAD, NO. 2589
Man TNG was my childhood, it appeared in as eye colors in almost every major Bionicle figure I liked as a kid and was prominently used in all themes I used to own as a kid and just like TNO they were awesome to have as gems and crystal as you tried to snag as many as you could from the brick pile before your siblings. The colors use in sci fi themes just elevated its coolness. I remember being disappointed the first time I saw trans bright green because it just didn't feel the same but I was happy that at least it was much easier to tell apart than between TNG and TNY when building past your bed time like the true LEGO Manic one was back then. Goodbye old friend, we will meet again, dunno where dunno when.

Ok, you're hitting all my hot buttons with classic Lego, Trek 2, and Vectrex.... and chasing squirrels. Followed.
Incredibly unbroken review moving from topic to topic noone had a chance to interrupt - it was quite hypnotic.
Top tier comment right here! 😂
@@RRSlugger So glad you got the reference. The Star Trek II clip gave me confidence.
@@Visuwyg Oh you can fire away with confidence here - you’re talking to a true Trekkie! 😂
While all the other kids were watching Pokémon or whatever, Slugger was watching Star Trek and really hasn’t stopped since, haha. Our livestreams often divulge into just talking about Trek. 😅
when i saw the vectrex i was like "wow this is such an on brand thing for slugger to have" i love it
😎
1) Strongly agreed regarding the female minifig head situation. I remember being so overjoyed when I first saw that one female print in Exo-Force, it still feels surreal to see how many cute and cool heads we can choose from nowadays.
2) I've already joked with my sibling about how the new yellow is "The Kamen Rider Zero-One Color", but learning it even glows under blacklight just like him makes me wish for more minifig parts in it!
I never expected to see a Vectrex in a Lego video. Such a niche and fascinating console!
It's not easy being trans any colour rn fr
I too was in tears when Kirk said Goodbye to Spock in thE Heartlake City Arcade.
6:58 Slugger crying at the discothek. Top review.
Slugger having way too much fun with that Star Trek scene was priceless 🤣
This was quite the meander through topics but a superb meander indeed. Lovely video!
Thanks Steve! I had a lot of fun with the flow of this video, haha. 😊
Best thing is reciving a new Slug video notfication, definitely the best lego TH-camr right now
I did not expect for the Trans Neon Green video to include Lego Friends characters watching Wrath of Khan, but I'm all for it
You know I’ve never owned a single lego but your vids are really interesting. I’ve been binging them
I am always stunned by how slugger is somehow able to outdo himself with each and every upload, cheers!
If I already wasn't sad enough hearing about trans neon green and orange being retired you show the Spock death seen. You monster!
Great video, can't wait to build that arcade on my daughter's birthday.. I bought one "for her".
This feels like finding out the actor of your favorite character from your childhood died.
My god this video is all over the place and I'm 100% here for it!
I’ve been lucky to play asteroids on a vectrex and if you like classic arcade games it’s a blast.
Whoaaah a Vectrex!!! I would absolutely kill for one with Tempest!
honestly as a kid I always associated trans-neon orange and trans-neon green as lego colors, it makes me so sad that Lego is getting rid of these beautiful colors that add a lot of pop to any build.
Making our Lego cyberpunk futuristic tron like mocs is gonna be harder and harder without these trans neon pieces.
@@Bionickpunk fr! I love using these colors in space and futuristic mocs, I fear these pieces could end up being expensive in the future
Thank you! I'm so glad I can help be a beacon of creativity in the "age of Shorts", (don't worry - I hate them too). ❤
@@RRSlugger if you haven’t, you should really check out the set Super Robot. it’s only $10 and i find it incredibly charming
As a person who is very specific and particular with my vocabulary, i really enjoy listening to your scripts slugger. Keep doing what you are doing!
Thank you! Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel! 😊
I appreciated the Star Trek joke, so have some free engagement
Thank you! 😆
it’s so refreshing to hear a lego youtuber who doesn’t focus on lego friends praise it, especially since most afols who prefer older sets shoot it down as “bad modern lego” without giving it a chance.
The amount of life you spread onto these plastic worlds is amazing! z
I admit, the visual of lego friends watching classic Star Trek is quite amusing
I loved how you were distracted by the tangents lol.
Lego colors, friends theme, diversity, girl minifigures, the friends set, vectrex.
I haven't related to someone like this in a long time 😂
I've long been a friends convert, and their pretty consistent dedication to diversity in their sets feels less corporate and more deliberate, as it's been ongoing and growing since the rebrand in 2016(?), that said, I do wish Minidolls had a BIT more life and posability to them, but the set designs, especially buildings and graphic designs for stickers are always TOP NOTCH. Great review!
A 👏 Fricking 👏men😊.
2018 actually. It was the same year as the Ninjago redesigns.
@@ButteredBread201 ah thank ya! Thought I might have misremembered that
Slugger i just adore your videos! Your commentary is, as always, truly insightful! I especially love the thoughtful commentary on diversity in lego, not something many touch on. Keep on slugging!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Thank you for making our days a bit better with your fun and interesting videos.
the "favorite 80s movies" gag got me.
It’s a better, modern way to expand that approach to everyone, no matter what race, orientation, or disability they may have.
i wish people would stop sleeping on friends, it has some really cool and cute builds and has come so far over the course of its existence
It really does! Those mini dolls can be a real dealbreaker though for many. 😕
@@RRSlugger yeah, they're not for everyone. i personally kinda like them, but the low level of customization and poseability is a bummer
The Vectrex is pretty badass. Awesome to see you have one.
Sad to see the color go but at least we have a decent amount of sets to pull parts from.
As a big FRIENDS fan I will admit this is one of best Friends sets created. It has actual space inside, has very well thought features and details and all that was in nicely priced set!
HOWEVER! I would wait for DREAMZZZ to come. A dream beased theme surely will have some neons :D
One can only dream...zzz! 😉
These kind of stickers appeared in the 90's "space port" theme
Made my summer days so colorful
Im now addicted to holo stickers thanks to them
I totally forgot about that theme! You’re right!
They were the perfect summer time sets, the gold chrome domes and helmet visors.
I need to buy those sets again
R. R. Slugger continuing being one of the best creators for niche themes i didn't knew i wanted/needed. Thank you for your work!!
Thank you! ❤️
With that being said, in a perfect world I’d like to see the original Purple come back!
That is simply one of the best TH-cam channels out there! I learned everything I know about dishwashers from him, haha! ❤️
@@RRSlugger for me, it's the joys of ice chests! He's probably in or around my top 10 favorite TH-camrs!
I thought I was the only one thinking about Technology Connections during that tangent! +10 to that!
Welp. I made it. This is it.
I found the channel yesterday and I pretty much binged it in its entirety.
You do a damn good job, Slugger :)
Wow, thank you! I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up *that* pace with production though, haha. 😉
This is one of my favourite videos you have made, despite going all over the place you always came back to the trans neon green topic central to this video.
Thank you! Honestly, I'm really, really pleased with how this one turned out, despite it being rather scatterbrained. I think there's a nice pace/flow to everything. 😊

I thought this was going to be a video purely about my favorite lego color, but it turned out to be a even better video, thanks Slugger!!
This is the most all over the place video I’ve seen thus far. But then again I’ll all here for it
Lego retiring a color is like old yeller.
I think I can say slugger is my favorite lego youtube creator it's always nice to see a vid
Love this homage to a beautiful colour. In my RR stop motion, I learned how much it pops under a blue LED light-an effect that the new bright trans green just doesn’t replicate.
There are two things in LEGO that were important to me. Insectoids, and the orange transparent chainsaw. And the vestiges of both are long gone
Very interesting video! Loved the Vectrex intermission
I know you aren’t a fan of mars mission, but trans neon green was super integral to the crystalien spacecraft and as a result, the color will always hold a special place in my heart.
That Star Trek II cellphone sequence was hilarious. Also, RIP Trans Neon Green. You were one of the greats.
Slugger thank you for putting in so much effort to show us cool things!

100% agree with the masc/fem diversity, I SO wish we had a girl on the power miners team, which was the theme I played with the most as a kid!! We had 4 dudes that looked similar and they couldn't even decide which face prints to use. I remember being so pleasantly surprised when I learned that Jet existed on the rock raiders crew, even though that was out of my era she still holds a nice little place in my heart that I knew kid me would have loved to feel represented :)
I guess the cool thing about Lego though is that I can now make my own, I have a mechanic that I include with my power miners sets that has doc's outfit except with dark grey hands, dark blue toolbox, and MINI HEAD, NO.
Goodbye old friend, we will meet again, dunno where dunno when.
really love the lime green arcade cabinet, playing Outrun with a really wicked color palette!
