    Such a unique group of buddies made such a good old boys band . Nobody sounded like Toy, their music lives in my head forever.

    I was passing through Spartanburg the day before George was to be laid to rest. I was in a book store and read how George stated, " Toy walked into a jam session with legends B.B King, and Eric Clapton. King and Clapton had their fancy guitars and amps. In walks Toy with his beat up equipment, plugs in and proceeds to blow King and Clapton away. " R.I.P. boys Tommy,Toy, and George. You'll forever be in our hearts. Thanks for the memories. Doug is also a gentleman. After a show a few years back, he and Chris Hicks were headed to their tour bus when I called out to Doug to come over. At first they weren't going to. I Shouted " Please Doug ! "and he and Chris came over. Mind you there were only three or four of us. He could've just blown us off.

    I listen to MTB almost every single day, still, after nearly 50 years. It’s such feel good music, even while a lot of the lyrics are about loss and heartache. Toy was an especially fine musician, with a soulful voice and a quick pickin' thumb.

    Breaks my heart every time i think about the troubles the Caldwell family had bestowed upon them. Brothers losing brothers and a Father and mother losing 3 sons within a decade i believe. That is so sad. I loved watching Toy play. That thumb was interesting. I have never seen that technique used any where else in my life aside of the Caldwell boys. Their daddy taught them that style. I wonder where he came up with that or if he just did it himself.

    • @flickasBF
      @flickasBF 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I feel the same way; it's hard to think about. I believe that their mother mercifully passed away three months before Toy passed. But their father lived another 13 years. It must have been terribly hard to outlive all his sons, esp. after they had survived Vietnam. Hopefully, Toy's children were a great comfort to him.

    I was the stage manager for the concert series at UNCW from 1972-1976 as a student; we had a great program for a small school, and we hosted bands like Yes, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Argent, Rory Gallagher, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, Charlie Daniels, and many more during my 4 years. Every musician and roadie I met were friendly, appreciative of our help, and a pleasure to meet with one exception. The Marshall Tucker Band played UNCW in 1974 when they were just getting started and had big hits with Can't You See and Take the Highway. We were excited to have them.
    I entered the backstage area (with my pass) to set up the rider requirements and I was immediately taken to task by Toy Caldwell for my mere presence in the area. He was very rude and asked "what the hell are you doing back here?" I was totally taken aback by his meanness and attitude; I calmly replied that I was the stage manager and that we were very pleased to have them here, and that the show was sold out. I told Toy that I would complete the delivery of the rider items and vacate as soon as I was through. As I was leaving, I overheard his brother Tommy reading him the riot act for his aberrant behavior. I have not forgotten it to this day. Toy ruined my affection for his band, and left me considering him a perfect asshole for the rest of my life.

    MTB is one of my all-time favorite bands. I got to see the original lineup play in Rochester, NY back around 79 or 80 I think. Then saw them in Buffalo shortly after Tom Caldwell died. I saw the Doug Gray version a few years ago in Sacketts Harbor, NY too.

    Their jazz/blues interludes on songs like Southern Woman and You Ain't Fooling Me made them unique among the Southern Rock greats. Nobody had a sax/flute player like Jerry Eubanks and nobody chicken picked better than Toy.
    Saw them open for the Guess Who in 1973. They got an encore and we coulda' cared less about who played next, we wanted more of them.

    God bless the mtb! Just saw the 2022 version of them in Mt. Vernon, Ky on 10/14/2022. Doug Grey obviously the only original member still with them. Wish I could of seen the original band back in their heyday. No disrespect to the musicians that I saw on stage performing, because they obviously are talented, but it was such a disgraceful, and disappointing show!!! I will keep Toy, Tommy,and rest of the founding members close to my heart!

      I agree it's time for Marshall Tucker to hire a new lead singer for years Doug's voice has been shot and he can't even sing half of the songs I mean he still has a chance of just being a tambourine player he could still go out and tour and beat the tambourine player but they definitely need a new singer and it's not a big deal if there's original members or not as long as they can go out there put on a good show and sell tickets and merchandise that's all that matters
