    I'm 5'7 but my position in my team is Middle, In my case it feels like it's impossible to be a middle when you're 5'7, to do that I always work on my Vertical jump to reach the top of the net

    Im the shortest on my team,(5’3) and im a middle blocker only because i can viral jump with my hands up to 8-9 feet, i jump, a lot
    This really helped, because I always have the ball falling down in front of me because i tense up and dont push foward
    Again, very helpful, im taught to swat my hands sorta down to the side, because they dont want us touching the net

    Hi. I'm a first time viewer and your video is really helpful. We're currently playing on a three day tournament and this is my first time trying to do blockings. I've noticed how I lacked the press and squeeze since I tend to just try and do a soft block so my team mates can follow for me. I'm also scared of looking at the ball while mid-air with the spiker. Idk why I was made as the middle when I'm only 5'2 but I'm trying my best not to disappoint them and help them in any way possible. So this has been so insightful. Thank you so much!

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was helpful! A soft block can certainly be helpful too, its just important not to fly or be wild with your arms s the defense can work behind you.

  • @VB1Koach
    @VB1Koach 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Two things that I see Ci Michel doing, but doesn't mention it in the video.
    1. Thumbs should be up, vice pointing toward each other. Too many times I see middle and pin blockers, with thumbs pointing toward each other. Ms Michel demonstration of PRESS shows her thumbs up! :-)
    2. Hands and arms are shoulder width a part. In the video blocking the Japanese back row and middle hands and arms are wide. Not too wide, but enough to take away angles.
    I see so many times blockers, not just middles, hands are close together. This is why attackers can hit between the seams. Coaches complain to the middles about closing the block, but they fail to see the hands of the blockers are so close together by each blocker there is a seam created. Hands shoulder width a part by blockers limits the space in the seam if not close it all the way.
    Yes there could be a seam between the hands, but I don't know any coaches that teach and train hit at the blocker(s). It go around or through the seam. Yeah?
    For Ms Michel, thanks for putting this together. I am definitely going to share this with my middles I coach. It's good to see another say the same thing I've said to my middles. Can't wait to see what you have for middle attacking!!!

      Haha, Ms Michel, that makes me feel like a teacher! But I'm glad you saw some good takeaways from the video. Its hard to put some things that jus come naturally from years of experience into words, but you do that really well! I'm sure your players are learning a lot from you! Thanks for your comment!

      Haha, great question! I wish I had an answer for you but I really have no idea (and I can’t remember mine from college). Honestly there is no minimum vertical, I think it’s just good to compare yourself today to yourself yesterday, last week, last season etc. is it something you are working on? What kind of training are you doing for it?

    Hello Ci! I really love yours videos!! I want to know if you have some tips about what happens when rival setter sets fast balls to the outside attackers and as middle blocker you have to literally fly from one antenna to the other? In terms of jumps, what is the best option or fastest option to do that?

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Run! Haha, yea it’s hard to beat a fast ball to the pins. You gotta start loader and just make your crossover move fast. Sometimes I end up jumping off one leg but just try to close any space you can with strong shoulders 💪🏻

    Amazing I directly subbed. Do you also have tips and tricks on how to read more from your direct opponents? I still find that hard to read.
    Also, I guess there is no diffrence between male/female with these kind of tips?
    Thanks!

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub! I would say reading comes easier with experience, but you can improve by watching lots of video. stop the video right before the setter releases the ball and try to guess where he/she will set. You'll improve and get faster over time so that when you are on court and have only split seconds, your instincts are correct more often.

    So I joined my team as an outside hitter however - being one of the taller players on my team I was moved to middle blocker and ultimately finding it hard to adapt. I just have one question with blocking, which is when do you know when to jump because I’m always early.

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That will come with practice! Just watching the ball and then watch the hitter in the air, his body should tell you what you need to know!

  • @karolinapechanova128
    @karolinapechanova128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    hii, I want to ask, I have a problem coming to the double block because, I'm probably afraid that I'll run into a teammate or that I'll do something to her just because I don't get there, we just have a hole and I just want to get rid of it so if you have any advice would bother you to share it? I also apologize if it is already mentioned somewhere. Thank you.

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That makes a lot of sense! The older you get and more experienced, the better you are at controlling your body and converting sideways momentum into upward momentum. Its something that comes with time and practice, don't be discouraged! But do wear ankle braces, ankle injuries are so common for middles and players coming off the block together!

    • @DoofEvil

      no. unless its a crazy quick set, read where the ball is going after the set. Theres no worse feeling than making your approach to block outside just for their middle to get a free kill.

    should i buy proper volleyball shoes? because the ones i have right now are 7 year old indoor soccer shoes that i got after my brother grew out of them.... and also do you have any recommendations for a middle with wide feet?

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      volleyball shoes usually have better ankle protection, which is something that can be important as you are jumping a lot. if you cant get new shoes, maybe just get ankle braces that should last you several seasons and then the shoes are less important

  • @laurena.2879

    This helps a lot, but I do have a question: What do you do to accommodate a floating wing blocker?
    It's always been drilled in my head to close the block and, sadly, it's been blamed on me for not closing the block even though the wing is floating out too far.

    • @CiMichel
      @CiMichel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ugh yea, thats the thing. Middle will always get the blame if there is a hole, unless your coach has a keen eye and sees the floating outside. So you definitely don't want to reach out to close it, just go straight over and take away your zone and hopefully the defense behind can fill the hole. Then you can remind your outside, hopefully its something he/she is working on!

    I consider the press to be most difficult if you have not been taught to do so right from the beginning. I have so many shit moments from the ball dropping down on my forearm because of that issue. I have started learning volleyball at the age of 33 and I play in tournaments now and it is soo difficult to learn all of this at that age. However, the most difficult thing to learn is to develop speed and reactivity. Everything is just about speed but even though I try really hard and feel as if I am super quick, in reality I move like a sloth 😂 (looks so weird in videos). And thats super annoying...
