  • Essen is the second-largest city of the Ruhr-area (after Dortmund), the largest urban area in Germany. Centrally located in the "Ruhrgebiet" of North Rhine-Westphalia Essen historically was a center of coal mining and steel production. Nowadays the Zollverein Coal Mine houses several museums.
    On this tour we visit the city center of Essen. We start our tour after arriving at the train station and walk to Willy-Brandt-Platz. We see much of the city center with the Essen Minster (Essener Dom) and make it to the Essen City Hall, a modern highrise building via the "Rathaus Galerie" shopping mall.
    From the eastern part of the city center we return to the inner city, see the Kreuzeskirche and more of the northern center with the Church of St. Gertrud.
    We return again walking south via the many shopping streets of Essen towards the train station, where we end this tour.

      You are right - Essen isn't a tourist destination in Germany. I was also surprised about the Berlin Wall pieces and those hanging shoes... The Ruhrgebiet is the most densely populated area with many industrial cities merged together. It's different to the northern / southern big cities like Hamburg and Munich

      Yes, and it also means simply "Food" in German. The name has a different origin though. Here's an article (in German) - maybe Google Translate makes a useful translation? www.derwesten.de/staedte/essen/warum-heisst-die-stadt-essen-eigentlich-essen-mit-leckerem-essen-hat-es-jedenfalls-nichts-zu-tun-id213126567.html

    Did you test drive to the places you want to film before the video?

    • @poptravelorg
      @poptravelorg  ปีที่แล้ว

      In some cases I know the city from previous visits. Usually though I just start filming after arriving by train and then find my way through with Google Maps. Often when traveling I record multiple cities per day so I usually do a small preparation on my way to each place. That's why sometimes I walk "wrong" streets yet the walks give a good overall picture of each city - especially with the backstreets

      Viele Orte, wie Essen hier, besuche ich nur für dass Video. An dem Tag war ich vorher in Dortmund und danach in Bochum - also 3 Videos an diesem Tag. Dabei verpasse ich sicherlich so manche interessante Straße aber in der Masse habe ich viele Videos - über 160 derzeit aus Deutschland alleine

    There is virtually not one street or location in this video that I wouldn´t know, having walked on them myself numerous times. Peculiar experience to see them now, many decades later! How do you pick the cities that you feature on your channel? As you mentioned yourself, Essen isn`t a tourists destination. Also ist a lot different in the southern part, like lake Baldeney. Thats where I actually grew up. We had a student from San Francisco living with us for one year via the AFS (American Field Service). Thats where my interest in the USA originated from. Do you travel all theese cities alone? Or with some company? Anyhow, I appreciate it very much to be able to take a look back at my hometown after all theese years!! Love! Michael

      Back in September/October 2020 I traveled around Germany and went to many places I've never been like Essen here. I like traveling alone or also in company yet that extensive Germany trip was solo. Almost every day I was walking and recording videos which I enjoyed. The amount of walks would be tough for a partner 😎. On that day of this video I was in Dortmund, then Essen and finally Bochum. Because of up to 3 places per day it was interesting and also exercise as there wasn't much travel possible in 2020.
      Within a few weeks I saw more of Germany than ever before and have fond memories of that trip where I visited some 60 places. In 2019 I was traveling mostly around Europe and South East Asia... ( www.poptravel.org/videos/archives/ )I used to travel much slower before 2019 - these fast travels are fun in a different way...

      it is very gray, full of drug addicts, abandoned parking lots with homeless people. People walking around simply don´t care about themselves and it makes the city look even uglier. Nothing to do/go out on the weekends (at least in the city center) Not many good places to eat. I have been there several times the past two years for work, and it´s only my honest experience so far. I could not live there longer than a month

      well, the good thing is that is close to other cities, like Düsseldorf or Cologne. You get a Semester Ticket from the Uni to travel for free. Also, there most be nicer parts outside the city center. I think Rüttenscheid could be an option@@asanmal-f2h

    • @poptravelorg
      @poptravelorg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm using a DJI Osmo Pocket (1) and a Zoom H1 microphone for the audio on these walking videos. I'm still having a look at the DJI Pocket 2 yet I may wait for another generation with significantly better quality and HDR. I'd rather prefer to upgrade to 4K60 HDR which currently only the iPhone 12 Pro Max provides well enough - though with ugly lens flares and requiring an additional gimbal... Still happy with the Osmo Pocket 1
