Where we live the hatchery is more like a breeder small scale wise. I have gotten chicks from them. I got my first laying hens off of craigslist and they were wonderful. I have rescued many hens and those are always the ones with health issues. Poor things.
I have purchased most mine from a small hatchery near me. They only specializes in a few doz breeds and I can tour the facility and buy chicks or hens from them. So it’s the best of both worlds. I get the wide selection of hens for my mixed flock in one place while supporting a local small business.
I am buying my first flock this spring from a breeder, in person, simply because she is going to spend the time answering questions and making sure I have all of my tools and knowledge in place.
Dear Hobby Farm Guys, Another great programme. A very important topic, one that has interested me for a long time. You have thought out the pros and cons with great care and thought. Thank you very much for this presentation. While for long I have favoured the individual breeder route, many very good points were made on behalf of the hatcheries. Thank you again for a very timely programme. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario, Canada.
Make sure you include the shipping in the cost of hatchery chicks. And then you pay separate shipping if you buy turkeys or waterfowl as well, since chicks/ducklings/goslings/poults are not shipped together. 🤷♀️ What would you think of doing a video on what it might entail to become a breeder?
I feel old if you're going to start off get you some hatchery once you have to figure out how to do everything and what you want to do with them and if you want to continue breeding to sell babies that's when I would go to breeder stock
I don’t have any breeders around me but I have bought chickens from the feed store. I like that option as there are no minimums to purchase but dislike the fact that I have been sold chickens twice that don’t lay the color of egg they claimed it to would. I have bought from hatcheries on the internet and I like that option because there are more varieties to pick from and some of them will sale as little as 3 chicks and you sometimes get an extra included. I don’t like the fact that some chicks can be very expensive and the shipping price is also high. So, if you are looking for a specific type of bird not usually locally sold, hatcheries are a better option.
As you said, it depends on what you want. If you are looking for a local 'breeder' of Easter Eggers good luck. They are not a breed but different breeds crossed, yet they always rank high on the 'most' popular list. You won't see a hatchery without them. Fun discussion gents.🐓🐓🐔🐔🐣🐣🦃🦃🦆🦆🦢🦢
I’ll vote for supporting the small guy as this practice gives the “people” more power 💪🏽
Continue your great show guys 👏🏽
This was good! Well done!

I want breeders stock!

Wow! I was wondering about this exact question not long ago! It’s great to have another opinion!
Very good video I will go for breeder chickens as I always do
GD GOOD JOB. Bravo!
Great video and great information about the chickens 🐔 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I've bought chicks from several hatcheries throughout the years. Jenks by far has the healthiest chick's that I have received.
Cackle hatchery sales heritage turkeys.

🤔 Interesting idea
You guys should make a video on raising pigeons. Also, great videos!!

Hatchery stock has it's challenges but I prefer a breeder over hatchery hands down
I buy my chicks from the local farm store- they breed their own, 'no preservatives added'.. 😉
Depends on the hatchery. Great luck with McMurray. Not so good with another one

Tomany Cockerels are good eating.
I just wondered why you didn’t throw in the mix hatching your own out from a mixed breed flock
That’s a story for another video 😁
Off topic question. Anyone feed smoked pork to their chickens?
Not all males are immediately destroyed. A lot of hatcheries sell them as "Fry Pan Bargains"...
True. Though the overwhelming majority of them are.
