One thing I've learned as a " newbie" caker for past 3 years is.......just ask and TH-cam will bring you the answers via tutorials. There are many wonderful people out there that like to share their talent freely to which I am very, very greatful for :)
Haha! You're very welcome! Let me know how you like the new method. :) Look at it this way, now you'll NEVER forget how to do it. LOL! So happy you found this video. :)
Hi Mayra! Thank you! I tend to stay away from fondant because it's rather flimzy but try it. If you just add a little bit of tylose to it you can turn it into gumpaste.
they need to pay you Laura! You just increased their sales! this video should come with those tap its! I had no clue of what I was doing. Thanks a million!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it. When I'm gonna be putting font on the cake presentation board, I usually do it the day before when my board is already covered in fondant. If you're gonna be putting it on your cake, I would do it when you're decorating the cake. Generally the font is the last thing to go on unless you'll be decorating around it. The letters should be moist and pliable. If you make them the day before, they'll probably get too hard for them to be flush on your cake.
Soooo much help! I have had these for years and never used them for a cake....I'm not always a direction reading kind of gal so I guess I didn't realize they were called "tappits" lol I can't wait to try using them the right way asap!!
I have these and mine always turned out a mess and never worked so gave up on them. Thank you for this great tutorial, I’m going to try it your way and give it another shot. Thank you
I just used this tutorial tonight and some comments on these were that they were hard to use but this tutorial made my tappit super easy. Thanks a bunch especially for which letters to buy.
I'm so grateful for your videos, I've learned so much from you! My FMM cutters just came in - I bought Tappits in Alphabet and also bought their ribbon cutters. This method will help my thin ribbons come out perfect!!
Hi! That would be a big difficult to do with these letters as they are super skinny. With other types of cutters however you might just simply glue the smaller letter on top of some gumpaste and then cut around it by hand with an Xacto knife. :)
aside from the most amazing cakes you and Arnie create , your tutorials are extremely helpful.. I just got some of these and plan on using them on the next cake.... thank you so much for your help............
I've had my tapit for over a year and have not tried it yet. Thanks for saving me the trouble of making the mistakes that I would have had I not seen this video.
Thanks Laura! I have the upper and lower case of the funky letters and the italic ones. Love the end result, but definitely have a love/hate relationship with my cutters! I want to get the block letter ones next!
HI! You can use fondant but be prepared to struggle as it is somewhat flimsy. That's why I like to use gumpaste. If you're gluing them ONTO your cake, you want to cut them out immediately before you glue them. If you're adding them to a plaque or decoration, you can do it at anytime. :)
Thank you so much for the tappit video you really explain very well, so I ordered the ones your working with on the video, they were so easy to do on my first try I LOVE LOVE THEM will be ordering the other sets, AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!😊😊
Thank you so much! I appreciate you giving me such amazing feedback on this tutorial. :) I'm so glad you were able to use them with no problem. You are VERY welcome and thank you for watching! :)
Hi Valeta! Thank you for telling me that. That just confirms why we do what we do. :) So happy you've enjoyed them and learned from them. :) No shoe video tutorials unfortunately but I do however have an awesome step by step photo tutorial on how to make converse sneakers in my Krazy Kool Cake Designs FB page. Just search in the "Albums". :)
Thank God i found your video. I bought these tappit just a week ago and i find it hard to use but now that i can easily work on it..you're such a great help ..thank you so much and More power ❤
Thankyou so much for this tutorial...You are the Best !!! Just one question Can we do this in advance or do we have to do on the same day of decorating a cake...
Wow. I had bought end these for maybe about 6 months ago. tried it and didn't work so put them away. Then I saw your video in how to do it and sure enough I was doing it the wrong way...haha I thought it didn't work. Thank you so much for your AMAZING tutorials. God Bless.
Thank you for your tutorials I have been a fan of yours for a long time I bought some of the tappits and was no sure how to really use the thank you so much :-)
Same method is used. We eliminate any cornstarch or powdered sugar residue by steaming. We have a tutorial on that. If you don't use a steamer, you can just brush on a tiny bit of vodka with a paintbrush. Voila. :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I just came across these cutters and had no idea how to work with them, you don't know all the grieve I've gone through… until now… lol Dicen que el que no sabe es como el que no ve, cuan cierto!
I have been using these the way wrong way!!! I used it my pressing it onto my fondant then pulling up and tearing it away. Wow I can't wait to use these again now... thank you!
I have a question for you Laura, how do you make the background layer for the letters when you do a double layer. By that I mean when there is a thicker lettering behind the skinnier letter. It's very cute!
Laura I have learned more from your tutorials than the tutorials that I've actually paid for. I do have a question about making shoes...do you have a video on that? Recently I attempted to make a show from gumpaste/fondant and I thought all was well until I removed the shoe to place it on my cake and the whole shoe caved in and broke...what happened?
Right. You want to keep it covered so it stays moist so you can easily place them on the cake or cake presentation board. If they dry they'll be too fragile and they might break on you, plus you'll have a very difficult time of getting them to stick to anything. I hope that helps. :)
You're very welcome. If the tappits that will be put on buttercream do not need to bend at all (if applying on a completely flat surface), you can dry them first. If placing them on fondant, I would recommend applying while still moist. If you let them completely dry, even if you add edible glue to the back of each one (or water), you'll have a very difficult time getting them to stick. We always put these on fresh and moist. :)
Hey Laura. I just bought the upper and lower case FMM funky letters. I have a question about the upper case letters and numbers. My upper case didn't have a zero for the numbers. Only 1-9. Do you use the letter "O" for the zero? Thanks Laura. :-)
I love this tutorial, I've watched it at least 3 or 4 times, very helpful. Was wondering, the other day I saw a cake artist post that she used a CAMEO (assuming it was the Silhouette) cutter to cut some large letters. Have you heard of this and do you know of anyone who has used it with fondant and if it's food safe. Just wondering, thanks!
Hi..thank you very much for the tutorial..i plan to order this on amazon..but im pretty scared to use it on fondant as what i read from other comments...unfortunately im living in saudi arabia and its quite hard to find gumpaste.hope you can give me any suggestion or help me decide to order this or not...thank you again, you both are my angels..
Hi Deborah! You're very welcome! You can just order tylose powder and mix it into fondant to turn it into gumpaste. Please be sure to check out our tutorial on how we make gumpaste. God bless you friend! :)

So happy you found me! Thank you. :) Let me know how you like the new technique after you try it. :)
Hi Mayra! Thank you! I tend to stay away from fondant because it's rather flimzy but try it. If you just add a little bit of tylose to it you can turn it into gumpaste.

Thanks Laura! I have the upper and lower case of the funky letters and the italic ones. Love the end result, but definitely have a love/hate relationship with my cutters! I want to get the block letter ones next!
I didn’t know how to use these properly till now..this will be a terrific help.Thank you...
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial Caroline! Thank you for watching! :)
Not stupid at all. :) Gumpaste is fondant mixed with a power called tylose. The tylose helps it dry quickly and makes it nice and hard. :)
HI! You can use fondant but be prepared to struggle as it is somewhat flimsy. That's why I like to use gumpaste. If you're gluing them ONTO your cake, you want to cut them out immediately before you glue them. If you're adding them to a plaque or decoration, you can do it at anytime. :)

Great tutorial. I sometimes struggle with getting my letters out. I'll have to keep all your tips in mind. Thank you!
It does stick a little but use cornstarch to avoid that all together. :)

You're very welcome! :)
Hi Laura i just buy these and i like to kbow if i can use fondant or just gum paste.
I recommend gumpaste. :)
ah! This seems like a much easier way to use these! :) Thanks for the tutorial
Do you use the same method for black and red lettering? If so how do you get the cornflour or icing sugar off the letters?
Hi! No, unfortunately they don't. I wish! I purchase mine at global sugar art's website.
Muy cierto! Glad you found my tutorial! :)
Hi there :) Love your videos. i had a quick question CAN I USE FONDANT TO MAKE LETTERS??
My pleasure Marie! :)
I bought one set....didn't know how to them....set them aside....bought another set.....still frustrated....glad I found your video!
So we shouldn't let this dry out nefore placing on cake Or CAKEBASEBOARD?
Right. You want to keep it covered so it stays moist so you can easily place them on the cake or cake presentation board. If they dry they'll be too fragile and they might break on you, plus you'll have a very difficult time of getting them to stick to anything. I hope that helps. :)
Thanks for the informative Video. Can you dry these out first and then put them on buttercream or fondant?
You're very welcome. If the tappits that will be put on buttercream do not need to bend at all (if applying on a completely flat surface), you can dry them first. If placing them on fondant, I would recommend applying while still moist. If you let them completely dry, even if you add edible glue to the back of each one (or water), you'll have a very difficult time getting them to stick. We always put these on fresh and moist. :)
You are VERY welcome! :) Thank you.
That's awesome Mel! You are VERY welcome! :)
your tutorials have helped me make some awesome cakes. Thank you so much!
+Matthew Smith That's wonderful to hear Matthew! Thank you! :)
No problem. Hey, I have a TH-cam channel too if you want to check it out.
Does gumpaste not stick to the rolling pin nor the mat? I've never used gumpaste before only fondant.
Hi Kylie! I'm so glad it helped you! Yay!!! :)
So happy you liked the tutorial. :)
Hey Laura. I just bought the upper and lower case FMM funky letters. I have a question about the upper case letters and numbers. My upper case didn't have a zero for the numbers. Only 1-9. Do you use the letter "O" for the zero? Thanks Laura. :-)
You are so welcome! :)
These are sooo much easier to use after watching this tutorial x
That's awesome Elaine! Thank you for saying so! :)
Hey this is great... Did you treat the gum paste the tilo powder first before using it?
+Kim Vickers Hi Kim! We make our gumpaste by mixing fondant with tylose. :)
+laurapoopie thank you very much :)!
You are VERY welcome!!! :)
love your tutorials they are so helpful.
Haha! You're welcome Karina! Glad the tutorial has helped. :)
I have always had problems with tapits in the past and this is the best tutorial I have seen so far.
That's such wonderful feedback Dawn! Thank you so much! :)
OMG thank you just got some of these and needed a lesson! Great video thanks!
Thank you! :)
omg thx u so much for this video. Worked 100%.
That's so awesome Kimberly! You're VERY welcome! So glad it helped! :)
Can the same thing be done with fondant and powdered sugar?
Hi..thank you very much for the tutorial..i plan to order this on amazon..but im pretty scared to use it on fondant as what i read from other comments...unfortunately im living in saudi arabia and its quite hard to find gumpaste.hope you can give me any suggestion or help me decide to order this or not...thank you again, you both are my angels..
Hi Deborah! You're very welcome! You can just order tylose powder and mix it into fondant to turn it into gumpaste. Please be sure to check out our tutorial on how we make gumpaste. God bless you friend! :)
Thanks, this looks easy! Can't wait to try :)
Hi Laura,
Just used these for the first time and boy did I have a HELL of a time getting my letters to come out without spoiling them. I did everything you did but still found them difficult to remove. What am I doing wrong ???? By the way I love your tutorials they are fan. Thank you for taking the time to do them they are sooooooo very helpful. x
Sheila Bailey Hi Sheila! Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy my tutorials! I have no idea what you're doing wrong since I'm not there watching over your shoulder, LOL. But, if you read all the comments here, almost everyone that has tried it said it would PERFECTLY for them. I would recommend doing it again, being a bit more conscious of every step you're performing, and then maybe you might catch what your'e doing wrong. It also helps to be SUPER patient. :) I wish you the best the next time you try it. God bless! :)
Sheila, are you using fondant with them? Gun paste is firmer and gives the letters more structure.
First time I used the tappit cutter but it was failed. Then I saw your video how to use that helpful to understand better. Thanks!
That's wonderful! Thanks for watching! :)
Thank you I love your work I was viewing the Topper online and realise some of the letters from the alphabet were missing if I purchase it will I get the full alphabet thank you
Hi Joan! Thank you so much! Which one of our toppers were you looking at online and considering buying?
