    ======================================================
We are back with another installment in |THE_PHONE_ARCHIVE| - a series in which I take a look at weird, strange, obscure and unique phones (or devices) for your entertainment! This series is made to look back over older devices that don't run Android and serve as a lookback and retrospective of a certain device.
And well, ever wanted a "GAMING" Phone in 2008? Don't worry, our friend over at WELCOME have you covered!
Yes, the N-Gage existed and so did 2.0 as software and even the Xperia Play but this is something unique.
While yes it's unique and looks cool, the "GAMING" aspect of it is VERY limited. But, I do my best with what I have.
This was found at ewaste and someone actually was using this as their main phone.
    Crazy to think.
Anywho, enjoy this really long rambly review of looking at a "GAMING" phone from 2008 by WELCOME. Good ol' WELCOME.
Grab a drink and a snack, you'll need them.
Also this is the thing for "Mythroad"
    archive.org/details/mrp-games
And mine says just "NES GAMES" and not "App List" so maybe it's a different version?

Awesome video! Still watching it now! I wonder if this phone was made before or after the Nokia NGage? I have a few interesting phones that I would love you to do review videos on! Old Nokia, Xperia Play, Firefox OS, Palm Pre are some of the ones I have. One that was really strange was a no name phone that was shaped like a sports car and would make a car alarm chirp as a message notification along with working lights! But the strangest thing was it had cologne built in and it would put out puffs of smoke when it spayed! Atomizers I’m guessing) ever seen that phone before?

As someone who has held a lithium battery while it burst into flames, I recommend never leaving the room while charging a battery like that. Besides the fire, the (indoor) danger of a lithium battery fire is the huge amount of toxic smoke produced.
Don't die on us, Smoorez. Ripley needs you. WE need you.
also, i'm pretty sure a speedrunner using that handheld would become suicidal or rage quit and instantly put the phone in a blender or something. if there is a hell, this is how emulation would work there. even the music sounded depressed.

@Jesús David Restrepo Valdés reminds me of how I got a swollen cell on my 2006 Macbook Pro and I just cut it off to keep the thing running without it being a total fire hazard. Then the next one started swelling and eventually it was left with just 3 cells of the original cells (2P3S config, so I assume I was actually turning it into a *bigger* fire hazard) and then I saved up enough to buy a replacement :P

That was 2007-8 and smartphones hadn't yet decided what they wanted to be. I remember having a Sierra keyboard flip-out phone. It was a bit like the auto industry of the 50s, very experimental with lots of weird and wonderful tat but incredibly cheap and janky for a reason, the manufacturers knew their products would age extremely quickly. Windows CE was the main premium mobile OS of the time, iPhone had just been released but was way too expensive for the mass market, and Android hadn't been released yet. Wild times!

By some unknown chance I came across a source code library for development on a mobile feature phone SOC comparable to this thing's chipset. It had a directory for a whole set of NES emulator source code, known as InfoNES. Apparently it was designed to be lightweight and VERY barebones. I wonder if the Mediatek chip's devkit has the same stuff as well.

Wow a 2 way audio system.
The flash IC at 49:56 seems interchangeable with V00570002CDBG and probably near identical spec, which is a multi chip module 2Mx16bit (4MB) pseudo-SRAM (which is a type of DRAM which generates refresh and page/row/column access logic internally) and 8Mx16bit (16MB) NOR Flash. This way they can sit both on a traditional processor front side bus in parallel just disambiguated via CE (Chip Enable, aka Chip Select) lines. There's 3 CE lines there, obviously one for flash, one for RAM, and less obviously one for RAM power management.

For the video files not playing on the phone take a video using the phones camera and then look at the specs of the file and then compare them to the videos you are trying to play. You need to match the specs of the file in order for it to play. I do this with audio on many devices that are not made for playing music and most of the time it works.

best part is that you can hold the pins in, you can test the charge level of the battery just by putting the battery in with it unplugged.
it'll hold any battery as long as you can fit it in there and it's 3.7v

Long story short, we went to the mall and i laid my eyes upon one of those bad boys (not the same shell wise, but pretty much the same under the hood) and i was marveled. It seemed so amazing. Tv, touch screen (a novelty back on those days), two cameras, and the promise of playing NES games? Needless to say, i wanted one so bad. I was presented with a choice. Either the welcome phone, or a more humble, but, in hindsight, infinetly better Sony Ericsson W380a. Needless to say, my jelly-brained 13 year old self went for the marvel of technology that was the welcome gaming phone.
    Boy, was that a mistake.
It sucked. The battery life sucked. The OS couldn't do simple multitasking. The propietary connector earphones would make DankPods cry in agony at their mere sight. The touchscreen was unresponsive and i never used it after the first couple of times. Also, i could not for the life of me get any NES games to run. I regreted it Very much after just a couple of days.
After (rightfully so) tearing me a new one for making her spend a considerable chunk of her paycheck on something so unberably bad, my mom agreed that we would go back to the store and return it later the same week.
Tough Luck: While going to school with the phone on my backpack, the screen cracked. I was so very gentle with it, but not enough it seemed.
Needless to say, they wouldn't take it back and refund us. Ended up selling it to a neighbor for like half what we paid for it, and i got handed down her old Nokia 2690, wich was a mighty little fella that served me very well for many years.

Do not use apple pencil on touchscreens, it is active stylus and thus can interfere with a screen potentially.

The pencil is dead. There's no power in it at all. That's why I use it instead of those tiny stylus things they usually include

I'm at the beginning part of the video, so I don't yet know what the specs are for this phone yet.
But HOW CAN GAMING PHONE FROM 2008 STRUGGLE WITH NES EMULATION?
I remember playing nes games on my Nokia 3650 back in 2004 with zero issues, and keep in mind that that phone was basically just way less professional looking version of the business version of Nokia 7650 from 2002.
That phone could run even mega drive games with picodrive emulator, though only with no sounds.
With sounds turned on the mega drive it would run anywhere between 2fps to 10fps.
But without them it was smooth 50fps and ness naturally worked with sound on at full speed.
Only issue other than sound, was the smol 3,5mb ram size, so bigger games such as Sonic the hedgehog 3 would only work if you first opened psiloc systemtools and turned on flight mode.
It basically restarted the phone with the cellphone app and cellular radio apps turned off and with its custom lightweight launcher app.
This freed ram enough that Sonic the hedgehog 3 could work on it.

Yeah now that I watched longer it is clear that this is nowhere near as powerful as those nokias were.
Maybe I have gotten bit too used to Chinese Android phones having if not flagship tier chipsets on some models and rest using at least usable hardware.
With healthy serving of all kind of call home and similar malware stuff build in.
So i thought that surely phone aimed for gaming in 2008 would at least be more powerful than those old Nokia Symbian phones. 😂
Oh how wrong I was. 🤣

The mjau from Ripley at 4:15 (or what it is) made me a bit startled. I first thought it was one of my two cats but I remembered that they are outside for the moment.
    Thanks smoorez for your uploads.
You made me by the phone that I have.
I was looking for a new one and found one that wasn't half bad. But then you uploaded a video about Poco x3 nfc and I was sold. It was a bit more expensive but not much but with the specs that it had it wasn't a bad deal.
Still use it and I write this message from it.
When the updates stop coming I will install a new rom so I can use this for a bit longer.

I’m usually one of those people who recognise ringtones pinched from other mobile phone brands (so I’ll take that mention in the ringtone segment as a small nod, thank you very much 😀)… Anyway, I don’t recognise any of the ringtones here. MIDI 3 resembles the Pink Panther theme, but the melody is slightly altered - that’s the only thing that sounds somewhat familiar. So, I’d assume that all those sounds are its own thing, just like the phone itself. The Chinese factory seems to have tried creating something original for a change… which is always refreshing to see.
Thanks for the video; love it as always. 🫡

It's unlikely that those ringtones are original, they could possibly be midi versions of popular Chinese songs the rest of the world hasn't heard of
