Kanye’s best song in my opinion. The similarities between the sample and Kanye’s verses are Nina Simone talking about the slaves that got hung which is the “Strange Fruit Hanging” and Kanye is taking a more modern approach just like on New Slaves and talks about a relationship being killed by Fame, Drugs, Money Ect. Kanye himself said that the song is mostly him envisioning himself as a Famous Basketball player that has to go through life in the limelight and has to deal with getting caught up with cheating on his girl and getting another woman pregnant/having to stay on his game for the NBA/Taking Drugs Ect.

I‘m surprised you don‘t know the sample.
It‘s Nina Simone‘s rendition of Billie Holidays „Strange Fruit“ which is about the lynching of black people in America, hence „strange fruits hanging from the poplar trees, blood on the leaves“.
The Kanye song is about a woman, probably his ex fiance, being lost in the limelight and fame, being attracted and blinded by materialism and therefore being a slave to society and to money and people in general mentally enslaving themselves for money and fame.
If you remember Kanyes rant at the TMZ office where he said „300 years of slavery? That sounds like a choice.“ he meant us choosing to be mentally enslaved by society and money, but of course like everything Kanye says it get‘s taken out of context and used against him.

The genius of using Billie’s line about black bodies swinging in the summer breeze, cut loose from the context of the original makes it sound like she’s describing people dancing. That image mixed with Kanye’s lines about this soul killing partying lifestyle and the specter of the original meaning of the sample and the established ideas from “new slaves” make this song just insane. Nobody else is working on those levels in there songs. Every detail is considered and sculpted to and layers of meaning. That’s the reason Kanye is goat.
