I actually did something similar with my ship in my previous campaign, there was just less of a struggle for a secondary cuz US battleships are convenient that way lol
I find these carronade or mortar type ships have a niche role, and they can either be highly effective or completely worthless... depending on what they go up against. They do plunge-fire at about 7.5 km, unlike the longer-barreled ships that lay out flat trajectories and muscle through the belt armor.
