Agreed. I've been telling people for years that Japan has THE best overall music scene in the world at the moment. No other overall music scene can hold a candle to it in terms of innovation, energy, performance spectacle, fandom, and fan interaction. There are many Japanese bands that rank in my all time best live shows I've been to list, including Babymetal, Gacharic Spin, Perfume, Wednesday Campanella, Wagakki Band, and Band-Maid. Some honorable mentions include Far East Mention Mannequins (FEMM), and 14th Generation Hanako-san of the Toilet.

@@OldMrB Just FYI, FEMM is two women who are always in mannequin personas (they even walk around and do fan meet & greets in these personas) and they perform robotic dance routines to pre-recordings of their own music. They are super skilled and just really fun to witness.
Hanako-San also performs to her own pre-recorded metal/screamo music. She is certifiably crazy I think - she projectile spits food at the crowd, pours soup and other liquids on them during her performances, and throws confetti and other stuff into the crowd. Some venues are reluctant to book her because the venue is a total mess afterwards. And for 20 bucks, she will choke hold you out until you pass out. I've seen many people pay for the privilege.
Wednesday Campanella (also known as Suiyoubi no Campanella) is an amazing singer and performer who just puts on super fun shows. She also performs to her own pre-recorded music, which is hard to pin down to a genre. She is very quirky though, and often does impromptu performances in public. She will often just run off stage and run through the crowd and climb on things and sing all over a venue. She has an amazing catalog of albums in any case.
Anyway, just wanted you to know what you may be getting into.

@@OldMrB I was stationed there back in the '80s on an old diesel-electric sub.... my wife is Japanese - thought I would hate living there, but fell in love with the culture and people. The music was surprisingly good back in the '80s (see Eikichi Yakazawa or Southern All Stars), but this new fusion (Yoshida Brothers may have been the first with their 'dueling shamisens') just brings the house down.
Thanks for reviewing. Have to go look up the references your fan, @Mitchell Hodgenmeyer suggested in another comment thread now.

Vocal YUKO is a person who has mastered "Shigin". "Shigin" was developed from the 19th century to read Chinese poetry as a samurai culture. Originally, "Shigin" is not to sing with a melody, but to scrutinize each word with an accent at the end. However, YUKO succeeded in incorporating that nuance into the song. This is a completely different vocalization method from general vibrato.
The Japanese are the ones who use the slide playing method a lot when playing the guitar. I think this is influenced by the shamisen, a traditional Japanese musical instrument. If you look at the performances of Mr. Wajima of NINGEN ISU, KANAMI of BAND-MAID, MIYAKO of LOVEBITES, etc., you can see that the slide playing style is different from that of guitarists in other countries. If you are interested, please try google with "Tsugaru Shamisen".

I have read that they are more popular than Babymetal in Japan. Yuko Suzuhana (vocalist) was the catalyst for creating the band. They all are highly respected musicians and even considered masters. Yuko has said that a main purpose of the band is to generate interest in the young Japanese in the traditional instruments of their culture. The instruments are: Shamisen (stringed instrument), Koto (harp), Taiko (drums), Shakuhachi (flute).
They were formed in 2013, and have performed in the US and Europe. There are 2 excellent interviews with them in the US with English subtitles. Though I think Yuko speaks some English and others understand it.
Not surprised by your silence, you kinda start with WTF, then Beni shocks you, after that you flow into the performance. Now it's going to you take you a while to grasp what you just watched and heard.
