I’m a theologically educated Christian. I saw the film. It was extremely powerful and highlighted by a fantastic acting performance by Sean Patrick Flanery. This is probably the most theologically accurate film you will ever see. It effectively exposes evil in our society…evils that many see as “progressive” and “good”…when they’re actually ancient and destructive. This content will, of course, turn off most film critics despite the project’s quality. (Lots of people are - wittingly or unwittingly - on Nefarious’ side).
I give it 4.5/5.0 stars because incorporating the Glen Beck interview at the end was kind of a lame way to wrap up.

Since I watch to Steve Deace and have listened to the book "A Nefarious Plot" by Steve Deace, I believe the purpose was to bring in not the atheist but the person that doesn't really have any religious beliefs or is seeking what they believe and for Christians to start conversations with those people by talking about what was in the movie. I saw the movie and I believe it wasn't about trying to convert the non-believers but for them to start a conversation about why a demon would rejoice over abortion, for instance.

I think the point of the movie is that demons aren't scary that's why this one can say all this stuff and not worry, the game is already over and hes just explaining how he won. That's not a time of intimidation, intimidation is to push people away. He wants a book published so that the world knows they lost the war and the world belongs to demons. The only time he flexes his powers is to make sure that James understands he is a demon. Breaking the light, his finger, telling him when his kid died or how he killed his mom are so James understands hes not dealing with a human.
"I'm a demon, write my book and i'll give you power." That's his pitch.

I disagree the enemy hasn't "won" and if you read the Bible JESUS Himself said it would be like this. The film perfectly depicts how the enemy works - very quietly slips in with enough yesses & playing with evil and before you know it, he's got you. WE have allowed him to be rampant and that's another lesson here - we didn't address the little things and now look at this country.

For me the film was a debate, and it was very effective in that regard. I was relieved there were no clever CGI moments. It was all driven by the conversation between these two men. Whether or not Edward was faking his 'split' or not is irrelevant. The doctor was a by-the-book shrink, or so he portrayed himself to be, which is monumentally ironic, as there are no constants in psychology. He was constantly trying very hard to fit Edward into some template, and that made me smile. As it progressed, Edward chipped away at the doctor's templates until the doctor was malleable as putty. I am a secularist, so I viewed this piece through a humanist lens obviously, and it didn't disappoint me at all. What consistently irritates me is the knee jerk reaction by many who view out-of-the-ordinary events to go to the act-of-God or act-of-Satan notions. We know so very little about the depth and breadth of human consciousness, what it's capable of. It's consistently denigrated. Now, I am not one of those secularists who froth at the mouth at a mere mention of a deity. I have Christian friends and we have many fascinating discussions, even debates at times, but very few, because there's no crossover from a logic based system to a faith based system. I loved this film for how it revealed the evil-place in the doctor, and by evil-place I mean how rigid his belief system was and how breakable it is, how easy it was for him to be re-molded by genuine nihilism/Edward. I'm equating the evil-place with flimsiness, with genuine weakness, with a system that cannot stand on its own in a real storm but collapses at once, and becomes a fertile petrie dish for active evil, i.e., acts of destruction for destruction' sake. I'm not thinking in terms of angels, devils, god or satan. My appreciation of this film is firmly grounded on earth and human consciousness.

I found Sean Patrick Flanery's performance to be very frightening. Nefarious was so cruel to Edward, delighting in his suffering. I rate it higher than you do; I'm not sure what you were looking for, but this is actually the way possession works. James Martin's story is not yet written. Will he turn to God? Will he continue down the path towards perdition? The audience is left with that question, but also the question of "Is is real? Can I end up like Edward?" Does the film attain its purpose? I think it does.

You touched on my major problem with most faith-based movies. It seems that Christians seem to think that if one 'preaches the Gospel' in a movie that one doesn't have to make a good story, or creative movie or anything like that.
And, it appears, from many of the comments I've seen from many Christians those who don't like Nefarious are just 'sinners who have no understanding of truth' and that's pretty much the same way the lovers of Black Christmas 2019 treat those who don't like THAT movie.
Being a Christian doesn't make one better, or wiser, or more intelligent than non-Christians. Yes, you believe your way is better but so does, pretty much, everyone else. What I would really like to see amongst Christians is understanding and humility towards non-Christians and recognition of their worth and value and sadly I really don't see this when it comes to those supporting this movie.

    • @CinemaSermons
      @CinemaSermons  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for the comment! And yeah I get it completely. As a Christian, I completely believe that the message of Christ is the truth. But when it comes to the medium of film, just inserting that message doesn't make it a good movie. We can and should tell compelling stories with good characters as well as having the message and subtext in there. I'd love to see more of it. And great example with Black Christmas 2019! I knew EXACTLY what you meant! Lol

I don't think it's lack of understanding for nonbelievers, I think it's urgency. We're running out of time here and I for one don't want to see anyone suffer in hell. Life is hard enough! That appears to be irrelevant to the nonbeliever. Jesus IS better - He IS peace (Ephesians 2:14). Peace is a gift of the spirit. We ARE supposed to "judge" NOT CONDEMN what contradicts God and stay away from it...tricky situation when you're trying to 'love the hell' out of people (hate the sin - LOVE the sinner). Truth is, people want to live "their truth" which is a LIE if it's not God's truth or contradictory to what HE says (not me or the person who calls your attention to it! You got a problem with God, not the believer!) and live the way they want and don't want to hear that it's bad for them. Ok then, you have what you want. Romans Chapter 1. People want their truth MORE than THE truth so ok. I love you anyway and there ain't nothing you can do about it! LOL! Look up Jack Hibbs (jackhibbs.com) and listen to him. He's awesome. I totally disagree that the movie shouldn't have been a "bait and switch". How many times has Hollywood snuck a preachy leftist message into a flick that was marketed to a totally different audience? The perfect and most recent example would be "Otto" with Tom Hanks which was marketed as an updated "Gran Torino" but turned into a 90 minute trans rights commercial.

This movie is an homage to The Screwtape Letters. They did show you why. You are definitely not a Christian. This was not meant to be a horror! I am glad you only have 323 subscribers and I can see why.

I 😮don’t believe that Nefarious was meant to be a “Show me; don’t tell me” what good is kind of movie. I believe it’s purpose was meant for us to use our moral compass. Any person with a moral compass knows the difference between good and evil. I believe the purpose of this movie is to have us evaluate our own lives and the paths we are on, to be aware of what is going on in our world and to act according
to our beliefs and faith when faced with decisions that affect us and those around us. I for one left the theater examining my life and relationships, including my relationship with God. I can’t stop thinking about it. I feel, for me, this was the movie’s purpose.

You are not a good critic!!
What exactly should they have shown, the actual abortion??!!
It was a riveting movie to say the least, but I guess it could have shown why people should fear he'll but most of all offending God!!

Thanks for the comment! Sorry you didn't like my review. Again, I agree with everything that the film is trying to convey. I think it's an important movie. But in my opinion (my opinion isn't the right one, it's just mine), I just felt it was a little too much of them throwing conservative talking points to try to convince people through conversation. If it's trying to tell Christians things they already know, it did great. If it's trying to reach the lost, I honestly doubt it did a good job of that. But again, that's just my opinion! Thanks for the comment!
