Went to see the movie Thursday. Loved it. If you know your Biblical history you know that there were many at that time who were claiming to be the messiah for various reasons. This story is told from the perspective of one of these people who happened to be related to one of the disciples. No mocking God at all. In fact, it’s a redemptive story.
Yeah, still feel there will be some who will hate it. But yup. And honestly I'm surprised somebody dared do this, cause in my mind i always thought about this. Not of "Oh if somebody did a movie about this would be cool" But the idea of visualize what any of the impostors would be like. That always seemed interesting to me, cause is the most real thing out of that situation.

Starfire is very beautiful but I wish she got more to do in the movie. Teyana Taylor too, in the beginning she's racing chariots and then isn't that important after that. Which is crazy given who her character is
I’m pretty much right there with Martin. The movie was fine but tonally inconsistent, I didn’t care for some of the creative choices & it could’ve been 15 or so minutes shorter.
lol that criticism seems like you can use on any movie Martian does all the time lol. Most of the time they say the movie is fine but it could be shorter and cut 30 min or 15 and I didn’t like the ending rental lol😂
It was promoted as a comedy but damn its so much more! In fact I'd put in line with the grand epics of what Hollywood did. It may not have the same budget but it does its best to meet that level The filmmaking camera choices, and especially the acting by Lakeith is truly outstanding This has already come into my top 5 of 2024. I found it to be really incredible I would like to see Jeymes use the pairing of Lakeith and James McAvoy in another project
***SPOILERS*** I would have enjoyed this movie much more if it had leaned into the satire. The "non-believer experiences a miracle and becomes a believer" trope is the plot of every TBN, straight to video, Christian Lifetime-esque movie. It would have been interesting to see Clarence actually succeed in his con and have his story written by onlookers, enshrined in ancient holy books, and used as a foundation of religion.
There were certain things I liked like the style and performances but the segmented narrative ended up being a problem because it ended up feeling like there were a few key scenes missing that could've helped out the character development especially for Clarence himself
This was alright it falls into the trap of trying to do too much and I just couldn’t gel with it all the way. My biggest laughs actually came from Woodard and Cumberbatch. Low Matinee is about right.
It's weird though they listed Woodard in the opening credits and she ended up having only a small cameo; like I kept expecting her to come back somehow and she never did
Respectfully and heavily disagree with Martin. But I love how there’s multiple different opinions in this show. Makes it worth watching and listening when your not hearing the same thing.
This was an excellent movie for me. So many ways I relate to it from a spiritual and historical (Council Of Niceia). It is good to see black directors making quality movies for us besides the typical Tyler Perry crap that has been shoved down our throats for the past 20 years. The future is looking bright.
I loved this movie! I would love to see this movie nominated for awards next year!!! If Jamie Lee Curtis can win best actress for her role last year LaKeith should certainly win an Oscar for this role!
The white jesus cameo killed me😂😂😂. They only painted him bc he had that fresh ass hair cutt 😂😂😂😂 That "getting stoned was the law", also.....Hilarious!!! Bro was smokin the entire movie 😂😂😂😂
This movie is worth saving. Enjoyed it so much. This was so worth the watch. I know I am being repetitive, but I don't care. I thought the movie was going to be another horrid hollywood production since they always try to push out the imagery that our people are bad. This movie however, depicted our people in a historically accurate context with so much morality it was inspiring. I Didn't even want to use the washroom it was so mind blowing. Shout out to the director. We needed to see this.
If you wanna see James McAvoy really flex his villain acting muscles, check out the Scottish dark satire 'Filth' - is truly an intense performance as a corrupt Scot police officer: based on a novel by the same writer of Trainspotting. Though the first scene may perhaps be the most uncomfortable, if you can make it past that hurdle it's plain sailing with his descent into psychotic insanity lol
15:24 the Roman occupation of Jerusalem is the start of what we have today. The connection to police brutality today is not just clever, it’s almost prophetic. But to understand that, you have to understand that the black cast isn’t just an artistic choice, it’s how it really was.
Interesting insights. Did you notice how the setting of the movie could have been set in modern times and story could have been about same trials of a young black male trying feel valued? I talk about it in my review at Movies, Music and More here on TH-cam.
Just saw the movie and its good, worth seeing especially if youre a person of faith. SPOILERS: My issues with the film is Clarence is said to be a hustler, a clever individual who is too big for his britches. However, for the first half (book I) I wasnt convinced Clarence was the character the movie is telling me he is. Sure, he is a loser, but a capable loser, no. There is a disconnect between the character and the script. There also is a emphasis on the phrase "knowledge over belief" which could have been shown more than told to create a better thru line for the narrative. Overall its well directed, beautiful creative scenes and shots. But I cant say its a rewatch.
I'm a Christian, and I enjoyed the film. Now, I do think it was a bit overly long and the ending could've had a better pay off. Maybe I'm not supposed to see it as such, but Wikipedia calls it a "Biblical comedy-drama " so, there's that😂
Martin's right, this movie is unfocused. I truly feel like Jeymes Samuel has a masterpiece in him if he collaborates with a screenwriter who can corrall all his big ideas and an editor who can carve off the narrative fat
Yeah, he did the writing, screenwriting, AND the soundtrack...and it shows. It is rare that one person can do all of those things at the same time and get them all right. Real magic could happen if he wasn't doing everything himself a la Tyler Perry.
