I am the last river boat pilot in my family -- I learned from my father growing up on the boats ... and my grandfather, Capt. Harry White. I remember building new coal docking that my great grandfather had built - growing up along both Kanawha and Ohio rivers. Quite the experience!

Thanks for this series of videos. They have let me understand where many of my family came from before moving into the Great Plains.

Very good video. Grew up just a few doors up from Capt. Harry White on Witchers creek. He was like a feudal Lord to us kids on the holler. The only person with an actual in ground swimming pool . Many people got jobs with him and he was always loaning folks money . My Dad's Brother worked for him and had a lot of stories about working the boats. Harry and my Uncle are both gone now. Heres to the boatmen of Witcher Creek. Lightin Cart, Fats Mullins, an Penny Hoy !

I agree with you Janet Wilham, i grew up just out of Winfield West Virginia and this is one of the more interesting historical films i have ever seen about our culture and how it evolved. I am very pleased to have been part of that heritage and have seen and visited most all of the mentioned places that were shown. Thank you to the makers of this great video.
