The post that looks like a hocky stick is a warning sign for snow plows of a hazard on or near the tracks. Needing to lift the plow and or flanger.

I spent a fair amount of time in Barre in the 1950s-1960s. Somebody we knew had the misfortune to be driving down Route 62 when their car was hit by a train. Fatal accident.

Just a mild technical point. Most of the items you are calling "bridge abutments" are actually bridge piers. Abutments are the structures at the ends of a bridge that support for lateral (side to side) forces. Piers support the span(s) vertically.

In the books I have, two volumes, published by the Historical Society of Cheshire County (Titled: IRON ROADS OF THE MONADNOCK REGION), there is a chapter in it covering this section of track, going south as far as the Templeton Depot at the Route 2A grade crossing.
That high bridge crossing over the Otter River in Baldwinville was replaced twice. The book shows all three versions of this bridge.
In the book it was very shortly after the formation of the Penn Central that the section between Waterville and South Barre was abandoned and dismantled. And, it was prior to the construction of Route 2 since there is no sign of an overpass for this railroad track upon its construction.
