I’m a freelance HMUA here in Dallas. I made so many mistakes but one thing that did helps me was, fake it until you make it. Now I keep getting so many clients on the weekends during busy season.

I've been binge watching your channel from the beginning. Amazing how far you have come. What a gift to help others interested in getting into the industry. I am a esthetician / make up artist but I've been on long hiatus since becoming a mom. I still did friends and family between then but wasn't ready to jump full in again. Now I am ready but feeling overwhelmed where to start. I dont have a make up pro card but I have kept my license updated. Is only way to get make up pro card with proof of 3 years experience or do you need make up school certification 🤔? Being much older its scary to get back in but I do feel more then capable but its just taking that lunge that keeps me procrastinating. Not sure if i should do retail just to get more actual experience or a spa but i am leaning on being my own boss. Your videos have been so helpful and inspiring and wanted you to know how appreciated they are.
Oh my gosh thank you so much! That's amazing that you want to restart your business again as a makeup artist :) I'm sure it is very overwhelming as even 2 years can change the industry quite a bit! My best advice is to jump right in and start. Letting fears hold you back is the thing that prevents a lot of artists from becoming successful (I was in that boat for 5 years before launching into my career full force).
For the pro cards, I'm assuming you mean on makeup websites for products correct? If so, those normally renew every 1-2 years depending on the brand. The credentials are different for each one as well so you'd have to check each one. I have been able to get the majority of them though with the makeup certification I have without a license.

It's so crazy that we have to learn to be photographers as makeup artists haha! It honestly one of the hardest things and I still struggle with posing people.
Yes! That’s the thing, we’re usually working on a tight timeline and then to have the client fuss about trying to get a good shot feels so awkward!

Omgosh! Pertaining to your last tip. When I first started freelancing I was living in Vegas and promoting myself through IG. I was getting some sketchy clients and I was only changing $65. I always had regrets leaving the job because I felt so unsafe in some situations for such a low amount of money. Not worth it.
Oh yes the amount of sketchy situations we get ourselves into at that lower price range is wild! You are right- not worth it!
If you’re thinking about bridal reach out to bridal teams, while you might not be a key artist right away you definitely will be able to assist. 💕 Also, taking 1:1 classes with local artists, great way to network and learn.

How do you go about actually having to explain after a signed contract cancellation that your fees/or portion are still expected to be paid? I've just had my first full blow cancellation 1 week out from event. She had no intention of letting us know and only said something upon our final confirmation check in. I'm stressing.
Ah no I’m so sorry that happened! I would just let the client know that according to the contract, the remaining balance needs to be paid in full due to the cancellation policy (which I’m assuming you have stated in your contract).
I am just starting and I am worried tbh that in my village is hard to find the clients… not sure where is the best to advertise..
It’s definitely harder in areas where there isn’t a high demand for makeup artists! I would suggest doing your research though and maybe asking for tips from other makeup artists near by.
I’m doing a course online and it’s taking me so long. Feel so discouraged.
Hey it’s great to hear that you are trying to further your education! Keep in mind that it’s not a race. Everyone works at their own pace and that’s okay :)
See what makes me sick is you’ve been a make up artist for six years you’re already successful and have made a career of it and you’re just now in aesthetician school but here in North Carolina you cannot charge people be a freelance makeup artist unless you are a license aesthetician But I don’t think that’s right at all there’s not many states that do that because it’s absolutely ridiculous like I was doing make up for a few years and would just stay you can tip me it was basically working hours for free I mean 56 hours doing a bridal party and the bride and make under $200 And because of my past mistakes I cannot get grants or student loans or anything like that and I can’t afford to pay for schooling so I basically had to give up and it’s sad because I’m actually pretty good and had very happy clients but anyways thanks so much for making such an amazing informative video and I hope one day soon I can get back into it. These were some of the best tips possible! Great job!
That is very frustrating! To be fair, I really am not legally supposed to be actively working in the general public as a makeup artist without a license either. Since I'm currently enrolled in school, I'm technically covered now, but yes it's very limiting as far as legalities go! I do wish you all the best with it, and hopefully you're able to eventually go full force into your makeup business. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi Claudia I totally understand where you are coming at with this. I am going to retitle this, but I still think it's an important video for beginner makeup artists. However, these are the main mistakes I made personally as a makeup artist as far as my business goes. They all got me into either a legal issue, I got unreliable clients from it, and also got myself stuck and wasn't growing in my business because of it. I did this not only for current subscribers, but for the people that are new to my channel as well.

At how many years of experience MUA can broaden their horizon by taking workshops and masterclass?
You can take classes at any time :) there is no limits!
