Answered my question on par at depth really well Sam. Thanks so much. Really appreciate the effort you put into this video! Looks like they will suit my build quite well.
Check some of the BRS videos. They've done some extensive testing on various lighting set ups over the years. Not the Phillips though, but a good source of info. They cover the impact of black background as well as reflection from the sides. Also, they did some interesting tests with multiple Kessils showing that evenly mounting 4 of them over a 4 ft tank isn't the best for even par values. Something to do with over lap and reflection. They've found that leaving a larger space between the 2 middle ones have a better spread. I actually rented a par meter from them and confirmed that I needed to jack up to 100% intensity during my plateau and also that spreading them as they suggest improved the even spread of par values. My corals have responded well to this. Great vid. It seems the Phillips may be the only LED solution for a really deep tank. Perhaps 2 of them on a longer tank would give even more interesting numbers due to overlap and reflection. I have to say, I'm kind of surprised the MH numbers weren't higher.
I just was able to watch it. I was a bit disappointed. It seems Phillips has the spread and blending down pat, but room for improvement in the par department. I also like from a mechanical standpoint no moving parts. I have had a Kessil A360WE eventually fail I believe due to salt creep and dust in the fan and heat sink internally. It would be a nice trend if the other brands removed this weak point. I'm keeping an eye on Ryan's ReefBrite solution.
@@tomg5405 they tested in almost all blue and no whites, that Is the preference of people in USA. They were More for people that like to run a less blue Spectrum.
I appreciate that, I put a lot of work into this to try and give the light the most accurate representation that I could. It’s an awesome light and will suit many applications very very well
The 1m results are great considering its in a black container. You saw how much a black back on the glass tank made a difference in reducing refracting light on the back so image off the glass those number could be higher. The price is huge and the only way to get us closer to Europe and the US is to get more people into the hobby something your channel does :D!!
yeah I'm interested about that - have had a few mention the black glass. I'm curious how that works, wouldn't it still reflect light the same way? The black coating is on the outside? But yes, I was quite surprised at the PAR at depth, mighty impressive!
Nice! Looked amazing in person fantastic colour rendering! I think it easily could replace your metals.... but I’m just an AI hydra fanboy hahahah. But it will really depend on the pricing, for a deep tank though for sure looks good for PAR
@@ParkersReef that would be awesome because i'm going to have to get another 2 of them when i do my 160 and i'm just not sure with it being 3 foot if they will work
Was that a black background on the test tank? I think that may be why the par numbers for the back are lower. It doesn't have the reflection that you get on the front glass. Great video!
yeah I'm curious about that. The back wall has a black coating on the outside, would that affect reflection? I wouldn't have thought it could- but the results certainly seem to suggest so!
Watch out BRS. Parker has quite the testing regimen.A little joshing, perhaps, but you stuck with it.I did not think it got so chilly in Australia.Stay safe. Are you able to work from home in these times?Bye,and GL BC out
Why were the halides placed so much higher than the LEDs? They should be tested at the same height to have an apple to apple comparison between the different types of lights.
yeah that is a good question and a point I should have covered in the video (but didn't!). This tank used to run metal halides on it and that height was what I needed to get it to spread to reach across the full 30 inches of the tank.
@@ParkersReef Да я их нашёл в Германии под заказ, у нас в России их нет, мне интересно Ваше мнение - они стоят своих денег, и стоит ли их покупать? Они Вас устраивают по свету?
Hello! I've got a SPS tank with 150x70x45 cm ... Do you think that pannels will be ok or I will need 3 to have a perfect light covering? I'm asking you because once my tank is very shallow, I don't know if 3 will be too much or not with these lights. Thank you !!!!!!!!!
Great question! You can look up the various lighting options in your local area. Usually halides are cheap, but getting hard to find and use a lot of power. T5 can be expensive to buy and still uses power and replacement tubes LED varies greatly, the ATI Stratton is about the closest competitor to this in my books and costs the same money :)
Haha yeah, but what’s the light fixture worth too and the power usage? Combine the fact that you will need to be able to source t5 tubes over that lifespan too...
They’ve been going at this for a while and only just released the second gen. which in fairness, really only changed the optics and the controller. Not like radions....
While I can totally understand the simplicity of it, and not a fan of it, I don't want a warm/cooler slider as if I don't know what I want out of my tank. I want mega royal blue? Let me crank that up to max with no influence from other LEDs. I know Kessil used to do this as well, not sure if they still do this with their fixtures like the AP9x, but there is something to being able to change individual channels to find what you like as far as color even if you're only really going to do it once.
yeah most modern LED's allow you to play with individual colours, I guess Philips have decided that whilst it might be fun to do so - it really opens up a lot of risk to end users producing a spectrum that is not good for coral growth. It's an approach that definitely won't suit all!
The Coral Care never gets to a T5. An ATI Straton LED can. We compared the ATI against the Coral Care Gen 2, new Redeon and Orphek. Especially between the first lamps there are worlds in between. There is nothing comparable in terms of power, distribution and quality on the market.
The price point is so disappointing, a company like Philips has the potential to revolutionise reef keeping. They’ve instead opted to churn out yet another absurdly expensive light, leds aren’t this expensive.
Yeah that’s fair criticism. But as you say, when has Philips ever released anything “cheap”. For the output, it’s not bad value compared to other brands
If you're looking for Philips to challenge market with cheaper light, you're looking for the wrong player. Just look at price of Philips Hue bulb with basically any other controllable LED bulb. Besides, this fixture is similar to 20 Philip Hue color bulb put together, in both watt and price. So the price is pretty fair IMO.
This is bullshit. Phillips is obviously releasing the Gen 2 in sub prime markets to get feedback and work out kinks before they release it to us over in the U.S. I want this.
i think this light will sute a 60cm tank with 25cm abov the water and i rekon for your dream tank 4 of these bad boyes you can grow some mermaids 🤣🤣🤣 .... waiting for a frag thu good work man
Hahaha not sure it can grow mermaids! 3 would be enough on the new tank as if still have some kessil supplements. I’ve had such great success with my halides, it’s hard to let them go...
Only if robbing banks was legal! I was thinking Philips would turn the reef industry on its head by using their economies of scale but no....how many kessils i can buy in this price?

I was honestly shocked at the par at depth. I can say it’s not that strong (no where near it) at depth off to the sides, but we are talking 1 meter!!!
Parkers Reef I know !!! I feel the design is for deep thin ranks not wide.. maybe with 2 together but still more testing would be needed
This was covering 75x75 pretty well, I don’t think it will do 80x100 that they claim, but 75x75 is impressive
Parkers Reef yea I guess what were the numbers like above Dave’s?
They faded away at depth on the 100x80cm tank. We’re decent at full strength, but adjusted to the colour we like they were weak at that wide spread
Great video as always 😁. When the pandemic is over, should go check up on Evan Luos tank again
ah you bet, so many friends up in Sydney I'd love to come see again - Evan right up there on that list!
I would really like to see what a prime 16 is like because I'm using them and some things in the middle of my tank do good and others not so much

BRS shows that black backing does affect PAR distribution
Yeah I’ll check it out, curious on the science behind it
Physics will have it that black absorbs all colors in the wave spectrum. White, on the contrary, reflects all colors of the wave spectrum 😊
And yet you can still have reflections off black surfaces :)

Hi Sam, i am building a 100x100x45cm tank. Do i need 1 or 2 units of this phillips coral care?🙏
You could possibly get away with just the one. If it were me, I'd run 1 Philips coral care and then add some AI blades to it
