One of the few perfect cars. The right size, great interior, great drivetrain, super easy to work on, very reliable. Would still sell like hotcakes if they were being made today.
Agree. A modernized version of this form factor would sell like crazy. The Crosstrek has the CVT and only 55 Cu ft storage, but is the closest thing to it with the manual. Need a mini outback wagon with a real auto tranny, like the BRZ, but AWD. Perhaps the BRZ drivetrain could be adapted?
They've had this combo in the Forester for years. I have an 01 with the "Premium Package" where I have a huge sunroof and a lot of the creature comforts a Forester could have in those years.
That generation is the second gen face lift model (SG). Some of those according to legend have a LSD rear. My 2008 has the LSD rear. The heated windshield is part of the “cold weather package”. You get a defroster element in the windshield, heated mirrors, and heated seats. On this generation when the check engine light is on it disables the cruise control. The rear hatch not unlocking is common. Most likely it needs to have the handle lubricated. Rust tends to bind it up which doesn’t allow it to unlock. Not always, but sometimes the PO420 is caused by a bad 02 sensor. Most likely though it needs cats.
Those were the good, solid Foresters, pre-2009. This one is low mileage, but has definitely lacked any TLC over the years. - Can't wait to see what you do with her!
I saw a video on The Car Wizard’s channel earlier this week where Subaru disables cruise control with Cat errors. Probably why the cruise isn’t working.
Hasn't happened to me yet, is it more a thing on "newer" ones? The cat on my '03 Outback is completely gutted, but my cruise control still work (I don't use it because manual, but it does work).
For your next No Payment Needed you should buy cheap crossovers like this Subaru or Rav4 and the first gen Honda CRV. There are a lot of people that can’t afford a true 4 x 4 vehicle and I see a lot of people posting videos of them off roading/overlanding in these crossovers
I second this. You're not putting a 1st gen Rav4, CRV, or Forester on Moab, but I've seen them on camping trips where some rough forest roads are a given. These little CUVs are off-road/rough-road capable enough for most people.
I had a hood that looked like that on an old Xterra. Sanded a little bit. Primer the metal spots. Spray it with a can of bedliner. Cheap and looks good
I was about to comment P0420 but decided to wait to see if you scanned it...lol I guessed it! My 07 Outback with 5 speed has about 180k miles. You have the same EJ253 engine....you will need the whole front exhaust under engine as the cats are integrated in the big header y pipe. I got mine off 1AAuto, you probably will not get all of the factory heat shields back on. The cruise control is disabled when that code is on. There is also 2 O2 sensors you might need.
I didn't jump on cat replacement for a P0420 on my '10. I first checked what could cause issues with the cat. Mechanical damage (broken ceramic from overheat/mechanical impact) or poisoning from lead/sealants/motor oil. Found my PCV valve was basically non-existant and was sucking oil continuously from the head. Replaced the PCV and pulled the O2 sensors - both were coated with carbon pretty heavily (the after - cat sensor is what sets that P0420 code). If the cat is bad both sensors should be replaced anyway ($171 for OEM Denso sensors from Rockauto). From getting the P0420 every 50 to 125 miles I haven't gotten that code again 2000 miles later. YMMV but I figure that I saved myself from an $1800+ cat replacement.
All CELs disable cruise control on all Subarus from this era. That's how they nag you to fix it, haha! Turbo models, you can easily disable the code and bypass the emissions readiness check. I don't mess with non turbo models. I just rebuilt 2 Forester XTs, 2nd gen like this one but from Texas and Oregon so not rusty like a Michigander. Subaru peaked around 2007 for all their cars, minus the graphite headgasket debacle that plagued the 2.5l NA engine. TFL should do an engine block test for fun to see if the headgasket is good. My bet is that it's leaking and hasn't been replaced.
Fun fact. If you want to order driveline parts for almost any AWD, you can almost always find them in Colorado or Hawai'i. I don't know why? I have rebuilt a couple of Totoya Trucks and SUVs and I seem to always find the parts in Colorado??
@@travisp11 I had to order two different out of production Toyota differentials for a four-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive and I found both in Colorado. It's like that state is where all four wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicles go to die

It's pretty much stock, an automatic, red, crossbars, moonroof, sounds great, and has 217k miles on it. Doing a 2,200 mile cross country move in a month. Love seeing this video an it's an excellent vehicle considering its age.
So, we had a 06, exactly like this one. Side skirts fell off, because the body panels they clip to rotted out there in the back. The tailgate problem is likely the mechanism the handle attaches to, and a new handle fixes that perfectly. Watch for the famous rear brake line rot. Usually right by the 4 way junction block just in front of the passenger rear tire. Aside from rust problems, our 06 was a great car. Lasted 330k, even often towing a small trailer, before the 2.5L gave up. Got a 2016 XT now, cuz the Foresters are definitely a great vehicle!
Man, that's a money maker for sure after you mend it. Wow, can't wait. I switched to Subaru since 2013, haven't regretted it once, they never let me down.
My wife and I have a 17 Impreza Sport, and a 02 Forester S with the limited slip in the back that we got through an auction for $700. Both are great cars in the snow and forest roads, I'm surprised by the all wheel drive systems. Just change the oil, plugs and good! Thank you for all these great videos guys.
Make sure that it isn’t consuming a lot of oil (ring failure) or a failing head gasket before spending $$$ replacing the front cat. The replacement cat can get fouled-up quickly by an engine passing oil or coolant into the exhaust. Been there done that! Great generation of Forester.
This is a great idea for a series. All the unique cars are super interesting. This would make a great beater vehicle to do exactly what you were doing, light off- roading.
The corrosion on the rear wheel well fenders is from that plastic trim. It's supposed to protect the paint from rocks but it also keeps water and road salt in contact with the metal. When we were living in Longmont we had some body work done on our 87 CRX Si in Boulder. Before we had even handed the car over, the head tech walked over and ripped the plastic trim off the rear fenders. We were like, "Uhhhh..." He asked, "You know all those Civics and CRXs with rusted out rear fenders?" "Yeah.... " (My sister's CRX had.) "Now yours won't be one of them." And he was right, they were perfect until we sold it.
Perfect dependable off road worthy all rounder vehicle, I used to have a STi one, great machine unstoppable I've overpassed hiluxs and Prados on sand, mud and even clay, +200hp, LSDs, some rally tires and lift, BUT boy was thirsty I was getting 13mpg when feather the gas pedal and 7mpg at wide open throttle, and reaching +200 km/h on pavement. I still can't believe how well this car do on road and off road performance 💪🏻🚀‼️
I had an 03 Forrester XT. Your cruise doesn't work because the check engine light is on. Once you address that issue and reset the CEL, the cruise should work. The wind noise in these with frameless windows is awful.
The sunroof tracks are notorious for breaking because of the plastic tracks getting broke or the metal coils that push and pull the glass assembly getting nasty in the sheath and won’t slide in or out. Found both those issues on an Outback I restored.
Back when a limited slip differential was standard with all Foresters. “Fun fact, you can get aftermarket buttons to command a lock to the differential”.
my 2008 Forester has 156K on it and runs like a watch. Has small external oil drip on driver side head gasket. But uses NO coolant so inside seal is OK. 32 mpg on highway trip recently. Keeping it.
Try running a bottle of cat-a-clean before replacing the cat. Works great on my Subaru. They all burn oil so the cat gets coated in oil and reduces the effectiveness which causes the code. Keep an eye on the oil level as well, I add a quart every 1000 miles.

Just some deep snow and mudpit adventures. Reliable cars, just double check the car fax for a replaced timing belt (pre 2012 models, though the standard 2011s have chains). Head gaskets aren't really an issue with third gen like they were on the first and second gen. At least, not to the same degree, nor with the XT.

I like to keep my things clean and it’s not hard but so many people just don’t care about their things which is weird.
I'm on my second Forester. Drove a 2002 for 200K miles. Currently have a 2017 with CVT. The 17 has a few advantages over the 02 not the least of which is much better mileage despite being a bigger car. The 2002 was much better off road primarily because of lower gearing. The 2017 will "power out" on a steep hill. In other words it will come to a complete stop on a hill with pedal to the metal and not a single wheel spinning. The output torque is limited to protect the transmission and the "gearing" is too high. The 2002 would beat the 2017 in an off-road contest. Coming down a long steep hill (in low range) the CVT has virtually no hold back.
Guys I really like what you did with the forester, I would love to see it go through the off road testing you guys do with every new suv theese days. Since I have the 2006 2.5XT in 4 speed automatic and I wonder how far it would go. Always wondered if it would keep up with today's new suvs or not. All the best from Ireland!!!
The cat code is the biggest scam in check engine light history. Get a code reader and just delete it and then you'll get your cruise control back again. :P
Had my bronco paint get fixed last week. Ford's fault. The dealership gave me a 2021 Subaru outback. That thing was the most uncomfortable and slow thing I have ever driven.
I would love it Would go with my 78 Dodge Aspen Wagon with a 4 on the floor!! Need a car to keep in Denver and my Ford Fusion with low pro 18’s suck come winter
This car as is would only bring $500-$900 trade In at a normal dealer. It needs well over $2K in work to make it "presentable" ( and with that cat code emissions compliant). While it may run and drive, it was probably deemed mechanically totalled by the prior owner. Some cars are worth the time and money to rescue. This one is questionable...

Nice. Is that sunroof cracked to pieces to make up for the windshield?
Guys I really like what you did with the forester, I would love to see it go through the off road testing you guys do with every new suv theese days. Since I have the 2006 2.5XT in 4 speed automatic and I wonder how far it would go. Always wondered if it would keep up with today's new suvs or not. All the best from Ireland!!!
I have a dual range trans that would be awesome for off roading it came from Australia for the ej engine so no adapter needed 40% gear reduction
I’ve never really liked the forester but I like this one looks good with those wheels and tires and it’s a manual
Great old little suv ! Those cars last a long time
The cat code is the biggest scam in check engine light history. Get a code reader and just delete it and then you'll get your cruise control back again. :P
Excited for more videos on this!
everything is great. Thanks! but I hope you cleaned up the garbage from the grass guys...
Tommy is everything
You guys have to do a 2022 Forester Wilderness!!!
is that sunroof cracked? Also the AC compressor looks like it is missing the entire clutch
I like how Tommy says mayonnaise lol 😆 Manaise...........🤣
That’s how it’s pronounced 🧐
@@garysarratt1 well maybe from them part of the woods. I hear banjos 😅
Fun fact: Manaise also comes in single servings...
Nice. I probably would have gone 03-05, but it’s still a decent car. The mileage is low, but I’d rather not see that rust there.
Dealer probably didn't want it because may not pass emissions. Would cost more to make it pass CO emissions in order for them to sell possibly.
From what I gather nowadays its considered a good deal if you get anything that actually runs for under 2 grand.
The “total mess” part convinced me to watch.
The "No Mayonnaise Needed" series!
man! i knew it was a michigan car as soon as i saw that rear quarter rust lol
Shouldn't an automatic be better for offroading? Bought my 2002 Forester for 1000 dollars and its been amazing adventuring!
i put an aftermarket cat on my 03 outback and it was $140 on amazon
Had my bronco paint get fixed last week. Ford's fault. The dealership gave me a 2021 Subaru outback. That thing was the most uncomfortable and slow thing I have ever driven.
The 05 Xt I’m opinion looks the best compared to the 06 and up
the 4eat is so much better for offroad than the manual.. prepare to replace a bunch of clutches if you seriously offroad that
You should do a restoration series with this one, it'll be great to see.
I would love it Would go with my 78 Dodge Aspen Wagon with a 4 on the floor!! Need a car to keep in Denver and my Ford Fusion with low pro 18’s suck come winter
And I do not have smog where I live!!
I found my Subaru for under $2k but if was highly damaged. A running smoged car much less a Subaru, is nearly impossible to find where I live.
Check the rear shock towers …
Yes! Save the manuals!
Buy an audi allroad and compare them! Could make a good series
I can smell the headgaskets from here. 😅
Sko Buffs! Subaru all the way FTW!!
No cruise control with a check engine light on.
Ah yes....the Michigan rust. They use a solution here during the winter, that will melt ice even at 5°. BUT it destroys your car. It's worse then salt
Unfortunately these were fairly known for head gasket problems.
