This is why I left coastal Florida after 10 years of stressing over hurricane season. I moved inland by several miles. Not in a flood zone, and in a new home that’s wind rated for hurricanes. Not perfect, because nowhere is safe in Florida, but my stress levels are down a lot.

Way back in ‘91 I decided car pollution was health risk to lung & heart. Moved to Cedar Key as our family suffered 1952 pipe caused 2 nd floor Flood and $50,000
Fire damage in 1971. Love Beach Boy songs, and boating is part of life. I leave electric off in my House in winter Cedar Key, and cook with small Propane stove.
Do assist completing backyard boat. ‘Have sewer from porta potty. 1 camper vehicle/lot Code of Cedar Key. Tenting, safe as room to pitch .

@@snowraven9096 we are in Florida and thinking about moving to Colorado, my daughter's company has just opened a new office there and she is trying to get transferred and if she does we are going. I have been in Florida for about 30 years now near a beach about 2 towns in now, started at the beach. I have never seen so much building before, entire towns on top in towns and no lots are left untouched, traffic is insane; we never had traffic before; there is no place for the water to go anymore and we will be seeing more and more of this and it will get blamed on climate change but I can tell you, the old timers use to surgery and only build on higher ground with land in between so the water had some where to go, that was thier main concern. Now you have houses inches apart from each other on land that was preserved for wildlife but it has been bought over and being developed.

I moved from Florida 5 years ago to New Mexico. The center of Tropical Storm Harold almost went over me a couple of weeks ago and Hurricane Hilary got close too. I went thru the eyewall of Hurricane Charley in Orlando in 2004 and that was enough for me. I didn't want to grow elderly in Florida.

This brings back memories of growing up in Tampa as a child. I loved the storms and had no natural fear of them. I stood under the water spout and let the warm rain water pour over me as the storm water poured off of our roof. In second grade I believe, we had a hurricane pass over while we were in school. Baseball sized hail broke the classroom windows as we sheltered under our desks at twin lakes grade school. We were bussed home afterwards and still with no fear swam home through the deep ditches in our neighborhood. water was everywhere. The roads flooded and the busses could barely get through. Power lines were down.
We didn't know that the snakes and other creatures were forced out of their homes. As we swam, I came up to a floating styrofoam cup. There was a tiny green snake riding out the flood water in this cup. We met face to face. I then decided it wasn't a good idea to be ditch swimming and climbed out onto the road I realize I must have caused a lot of grownups to worry iin our neighborhood. Like I said I had no fear. Thankfully someone taught us some common sense, since then 🤣🤣🤣
Since then I have been struck by lightning 4 times that I have knowledge of. Not in a violent way but thin strikes going through my house or car windows. Like a tickle across my forehead for instance as it strikes into my area. I don't understand why but this has happened multiple times.
I have a healthy respect for storms now but I still love the power of nature. It awes me!

As usual, great coverage of another extreme weather event! I love how Reed isn't afraid to get dirty, or up close and personal with the most dangerous weather conditions!
Hope he's got his tetanus up to date, walking around in all that funky grey water!
I always wonder if many of the Florida residents are asking themselves if it's really worth it to endure all the expenses associated with being inundated with flood water after these events.
Losing all of one's worldly belongings to the brutal storm surge must get old. Guess it's just part of the whole coastal Florida experience. I remember visiting friends in Bradenton Beach and walking around in roughly twelve inches or so of flood water after a brief rain storm. Guess it also really depends on what stage the tide is at when the height of the storms hit any given area. It's got to be really demoralizing for many, to experience such loss on a seasonal basis.

Think positive . We're 16 miles up the road ,south of Chiefland ....windy , rainy with strong squalls but we don't have to deal with surge here . As for keeping a positive outlook , if the guy has an older house that's well built and good drainage , might work out for him ....we have a small frame house down in Everglades City , built in 1928 ....when Wilma came through several years ago as a Cat 4 at landfall it wrecked Chokoloskee and we lost screen panels and a ceiling fan on the front porch . This is why I don't live right on the coast in FL. We're just a few miles inland. We can get to the beach in just a few minutes, but it makes a huge difference in damage during a hurricane. Storm surge is the big destroyer.
Our home is reinforced concrete block, the roof is standing seam metal, the windows and doors are impact resistant and we have corrugated steel window covers. The garage door is reinforced with horizontal 2"x4" metal bracing and a vertical center I-beam. We have a whole house generator and plenty of fuel for it. Since 2015 we have had 5 hits from hurricanes and NO damage at all.
But storm surge could just wipe it off the foundation like child's play! With lots of free beach parking for residents, drive-on beach access for residents of the county for $25/year, and being only a few minutes drive...it isn't worth it to live that close to the water.

Every once in awhile I have a bad dream of living in one of those affluent homes on the coast in Malibu CA and the unit being overtaken by waves and falling into the ocean. But what do you expect from a native Californian? On a more serious note gotta feel for the Floridians and the insurance crisis being caused by these hurricanes. 😢

    • @CaptBirdBrain
      @CaptBirdBrain 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@sabishiihito That area of FL has never been hit by a hurricane of this size and magnitude. Or at least not during recorded history. I've lived in FL for 15 years, and Ian was the worst because we got a direct hit by the eye wall. That said, hurricanes are easy to avoid because you get notice of them. I wouldn't want to live in the Midwest where tornadoes can pop up without warning. That's way scarier to me, and I've ridden out a Cat 4 storm. Also, the pics and vids you see are always where the eye makes landfall which is usually a pretty small area. Yes it sucks to be without power for weeks, but relatively speaking, the worst damage is always to homes right in the shore. Living 12 to 15 miles inland, makes a huge difference.

During the last bad flood we had here a man was electrocuted. Also a friend of mine was walking along filming and fell down into a hole where a big grate was missing from the sidewalk. He's lucky he didn't get cut up badly. I really feel for the people Cedar Key. I used to go there and play music at Frog's Landing.

Great storm footage Reed! We've really dogged a bullet here in Spring Hill, last year with Ian and now with Idalia. But hurricane season isn't over yet. Along the coast, we still got some nasty storm surge on the Nature Coast with flooding up to RT 19. The officials were spot on with having mandatory evacuations for anyone living west of RT 19. Here in Timber Pines, we are literally on the East side of RT 19 and we were okay. Time will tell what the rest of the season will bring us.
