New year, new Predator. We're now on the 19th generation of one of the most famous football boot lines of all-time, and as we've done with every new iteration, we must as the question, how have they improved? Well, in the case of the Predator Freak being replaced by the Predator Edge, the "improvements" are questionable.
In today's video we compare the outgoing Predator Freak+ and Freak.1 models to the new Predator Edge+ and Edge.1 models. What are the differences, where have they improved, where have they gone backwards and most importantly, are they worth the upgrade?

Adidas has a bad habit of releasing something good, and then almost 2 years later, they feck it up.
Their current new trend at the moment. Let’s not forget the drastic change from the successful ace 16 line to that quite weird ace 17.
Freak.1 Lowcut definitely is for wide feet. I have wide feet, EE on the chart, Freak.1 Lowcut fits me well and nice. The midfoot was tight at the beginning, but after several games, it got a lot better, feel like wearing Copa 19.1
I also have wide feet but wear laceless predators, its like they are created for wide feet
The low cut freak.1 destroyed my feet. I don’t know if I have extremely wide feet or not, but the squeezed my mid foot so bad. Tried to use it for several weeks, but ended up giving them away because my feet should hurt for days :(
@@aron6260 your feet may have very high midfoot volume. It squeezed my midfoot hard at the beginning, I treated it by wearing double socks and keeping laces loose a little bit with just enough lockdown.
I would suggest leather boots. I own copa 19.1 and mizuno morelia neo 3, they are very comfortable. I got Predator Freak because the spikes give me very interesting feeling.
I've had the Predator Edge+ for a week and played 2 games now. I've had the Mutator+ and the Freak+ and I prefer the Edge+.
It took maybe a game to break in but what I appreciate about them is that they just feel solid and comfortable. For me the fit and lockdown are good.
I play all of the midfield spots and tbh I don't really notice them while playing. I don't feel like they negatively affect my touch or the upper folding in unnatural ways. The zoneskin and the added weight feel fine, I don't think I need them to do anything but I'm sure help in some way.
@@FULLSENDFC I work in a soccer shop so I get a heavy discount on either model. I’ve tried nearly every modern boot there is and I really enjoy playing in the Edge+
Unless you want something that’s durable maybe that’s for you. But the edge is hardly a boot I wish I didn’t even try it on. Too bulky and stiff..
@@chanchaniceman Yes I got the AG version bc I play mostly on field turf. I do prefer them to most bc they feel strong and durable, so I feel very confident in tackles as well.
@CHAI Yes I certainly do. It took me about a game to break in my Edge+ and feel great. I work for a soccer shop and worn nearly every type of cleat there is, from Merc 1s to MIJ Mizunos. I feel like Edge+ are just as comfortable as anything I’ve worn and I enjoy playing in them.
I just got the predator freak.1 stella mccartney x pogba. And my friend got the new edge+ . He want to swap with me. Do you think i should swap with him or not ? Is predator edge+ better than freak.1 or not ?
I remember I didn’t know much about cleats and I tired the predator. The grip really screwed me up and I didn’t like it, so I went back to the f50 and all was well
Nice review, Josh. I agree that Edge is kind of like a step back for the Predator, just like the LZ was. When they first announce the Mutator, I was excited that finally Adidas are innovating again, then comes the Freak, which was slightly lighter in weight ( the .1 version, in my opinion, since I always go for laces). I think I'll stick with my Freak for now...
Would have accepted it if they had taken the upper and shape from the predator freak while applying zone skin elements which adidas has done it with the LZ 1 and 2. You don’t just wait two years to make a boot that is this stiff
I knew the split sole design in the Edge reminded me of something. It is very close to the Nemesis 19, specially the front.
Appreciate the honesty feedback but the edge need 2/3 games solid to bed in and they become a great boot the stiffness becomes a pro rather than a con for me.

In the Black Colorway the give me a bit of flashback to the old predator from 1994 or the predator touch from 96 (still one of my favorite predators)

As a predator and adidas fan I have to agree with you, this model is a huge disappointment. I hope next generation will be better and that we will get good retros because at least on the last adidas retro models the quality was there (but lower the price please... 350 is too much for a retro)

Can you do an indoor turf shoe (rubber stud boot) review.
The Freak.1 shape and flexibility of the upper works perfectly for me (have them for around 6 months now), but the spikes, however cool they are, provide less feel for the ball than I would like (I'm mostly a leather-boot-kinda-guy). I love the look though.
BRB about to go tape a quarter to my boots to get the same effect as the Pred Edge
Said it in the comments on the boot nerds podcast before, but I think they shot themselves in the foot with designing it around the edgy shape of a diamond or in generell around the edges of a gem. All those edges and sharp angles a gem has look cool but do not make any sense when included in a boot. Put an object that has edges around an object that is, like everything in nature, rounded and you'll never get it to fit
For me i have had the freaks and the edges but i have liked more the edges since it helps me more with the grip and it matches my foot size really good

The Predator Lines was never about thin or Light, it was always Power. I remember when 96 the Predator Touch came out ,for me still the best boot all the time, so thick, so gripi, but when you shot with them , the ball was flying so fast probably it was just the feeling. But still You can feel the power in every shot.

How would you compare the zone skin to the T90 laser 1 striking element, the zone skin on the blackout predator edge reminds me of those a bit
The rubber is much sticker on these Predator models than what was featured on the Laser 1. Similar looking in some ways for sure, but not very similar in regards to overall feel and effect on the ball.
i already bought edge.1 now i swap to x speedflow.. cause too much wide n stiff.. i think it's perfect for the goalkeeper, because it's more stable when jumping..
Hey Josh, what would you suggest for a replacement for the Adidas Ace 17.1? Really liked those but not sure what to try from any brand that is most like those.
Phantom GT 2 would be the closest thing I'd say. Thin knitted upper, but still pretty well structured.

I got the predator edge cheaper version with less rubber and laces and it really doesn’t feel stiff if u wear it for 10+ minutes

I have a pair of predator freaks and got them a year ago and I was going to get another pair but they are completely sold out of me size and will never make them again and I'm upset I love those cleats and the spikes don't rip of as like much as he says I have had them for a year and I'm a rough player and have yet to rip a single one off
Such a shame, but i dont feel bad for Adi at this point. They have a successful formula for the Predator: kangaroo leather, rubber Predator stiking elements, fold over kangaroo leather tongue, bladed studs. They killed the most popular football boot line in history with the LZ, LZ II and Instinct because they were synthetic boots that were less comfortable and aggresive than almost all prior Preds. Now they are doing it again, Mutator, Freak, Edge, no one cares. Only anyone who acutally can manipulate a ball well can appreciate extra grip, and that is the only unique thing to recent Preds. So why would anyone unskilled, the vast majority, want just another synthetic boot when mostly everything out there is the same: a knitted synthetic 🤦🏻♂️ just unbelievable

I am a Predator player ever since 2004 when I was 10, my first ever Pred was the pulse, though I have been interested in the line ever since Beckham scored against greece to bring england to the 2002 world cup with the precision, if I remember correctly. I am hesitant to try the Edge since most say it is not the best in terms of comfort, though is seems like a boot for me given the swerve and power. I am loyal to both the Preds and Adidas, however because of these I am considering switching to the X line until the new preds for 2023 come out or try out Puma with their Future z or Ultra. (Especially given the upcoming Future Z's look)
To be honest, I'd just use the predator edge in my opinion , it looks nice

Design predator edge.
The edge is absolute trash. They genuinely didn't care, it's so so bad. Looks tacky and cheap like an art project of miscellaneous bits glued together by people with zero football knowledge. My teammate played in it today and hates it so much. There's no way the same people who designed the freak designed this. Zero thought towards performance, zero original thought. Just a worse version of the LZ which wasn't fantastic to begin with. What a let down Adidas, just kill this boot and bring back the Adipower in a traditional colourway with a modern soleplate.
Adipower with the og soleplate would be a dream if it came back. Tired of Adidas' horrible semiconical bladed soleplates. Bring back the TRX bladed studs any day
@@JonathanRodriguez-nz9nw Man, I love the adipower. I have two OG pairs for FG and SG, but using the TRX soleplate on Artificial glass kills my shins. Been putting myself through the pain for that unrivalled experience of striking the ball in them. But for injury prevention I picked up the AG soleplate freaks.1 to reserve the adipowers for grass. It's impossible to find a power boot even half as good as adipower nowadays :(

Please don’t speak for wide footed players. I have wide feet and a small hump on my foot and these boots feel fine. The break in time definitely will take longer but I don’t feel any discomfort from the size.

I’m disappointed with the edge boots. I would guess it’s due to the fact the boots were designed during the pandemic, demonstrating worldwide economic slowing and cost-cutting.

Yep, they were the last boot that felt like a genuine predator.
I have 5 pairs BNIB stored in my attic. Two are MiAdidas (an all red "England Away" pair, and an all yellow "Brazil Home" pair) along with the 2014 WC colour way, the standard release colour and a blackout pair.
I don't see adidas ever returning to the traditional predator template (apart from the reissues they've been doing). Sad times, change a working formula and this is to be expected.
That new collar looks cheap and unfinished compared to the outgoing model….
