As an American who was an American sports fan before football/soccer, let me try to offer you my perspective on Todd boehly and his strategy. Boehly owns a significant ownership stake in the Los Angeles dodgers, a baseball team who is actually much like Chelsea. The dodgers’ talent acquisition strategy is often that they are extremely successful with identifying young talent and nurturing it. Eventually, they use this young players and trade them for more established stars at the top of the game, and they are very successful with that strategy. In American sports, too, there is a bit of a cultural difference in how we see players and their relationships with their teams. Sports here are much less focused on the organization, often, and players feel much less connection and heritage with their teams because the way you get players has nothing to do with geography or anything like that. Regardless, all this is too say-in likely too many words-that boehly does not see it as soulless because his sports culture doesn’t view things the same, and boehly does not care about anything other than the players on the pitch, at the end of the day, because generally the best players win the most games - especially so in baseball, with a 162 game season. That’s all to say that boehly’s failure is in his lack of understanding of the sport and the fans rather than intentional incompetence

@@NA597 They are at a push the 8th best team itl. They didn’t make ‘mistakes’ they mortgaged themselves to horrendous deals on for the most part good to above average PL players. They still have a massive wage ball, a smaller match day income, no serious European money for b2b seasons and have allegedly sold their training ground already. I don’t understand how you could possibly say this is anything other than a disaster and a disgrace. As flav says this is genuinely the first time I feel sorry for Chelsea fans. This is it now, this is the squad they’re stuck with for 2/3 seasons at a minimum. Think we forget they’ve only owned the club 2 seasons… give them another 2 and Lord knows what sort of financial desperation they’ll resort to.

    • @NA597
      @NA597 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@alawesy my point was they haven't wasted there investment, it's there in the accounting. Obviously they won't sell all 42 at once, but they can easily make 100-150m in sales from this group every summer like they already have this summer, there ready to bank 43m from broja and humphreys if there sales go through next summer.

    • @NA597
      @NA597 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@alawesy we previously had upwards of 10-15 players earning over 200k a week, for example auba, koulibaly, kante, warner, havertz and Mount wanted 250k. Now we only have 5 players on 200k plus. Lukaku, Sterling, Chilwell who the club wanna sell and James and fofana who they want to build team around. Hopefully next 2 years, palmer nkunku colwill can also earn a pay rise to 200k a week contract and that's the spine of the team
200k a week is 9-10 million. The 6 players I listed saved around 60m together. Add in money saved from players on 100k like ziyech, silva, malang sarr, Loftus cheek, pulisic and you can say chelsea saved 100m in wages. If next 2 years we cut lukaku, Sterling, Chilwell, kepa, that's 50-60m a year in wages alone. No recent signing has gone higher than 180k and that's nkunku and enzo. Palmer is now on 120k, felix took a pay cut to 120k. Everyone is now on reasonable wages

Sorry for a long comment but i feel there are a lot of things clearlake are trying to do but they not all bad.
The clearlake game plan for chelsea is:
    - Reduce the average age of squad with high potential players.
    - reduce the wage bill and make it adaptive to revenue. E.g. lower base salary but incentive driven bonus. Lower yearly overheads.
    - protect asset value by signing long term contracts.
    - Preload their spending in the first couple of seasons. As they are gambling that player vaule and wages will continue to grow at same rate. E.g. even if players only improve a bit their wage will remaim similar. (Any purchases in the next couple of widows would be for players u18 like estevao and paez)
    - due to the realative base salary if a player isnt playing even with a long contract they shouldnt be too difficult to get off the books.
    - increase revenue and the commercial side of the businesses. And rebuilding standford bridge.
    - Invrease the value of the club.
    Cons of this approach
    - commercial side is linked to success on the pitch and they havent been as good as they thought they would at getting sponsorship deals. E.g. shirt sponsor.
    - In the short run academy players have to be sold to fund the squad rebuild. Rips soul out of club.
    - due to amount spent the squad rebuild would still cost money year on year for the next 5 to 7 years.
    - due to amout of players similar age in all positions players are blocking each others development paths. Including paths of academy players so they is less chance of a connor Gallagher or mount being able to be sold to cover this.
    - due to the length of contract if players are injured or just crap will be difficult to more if they cant get the salary from somewhere else. Or get at lease enough money to cover the amortisated fee.
    - short term upheaval has caused issues on the pitch.
    - Bonuses causes selfishness e.g. players fighting over penaltys.
    Pros of approach
    - get a low average salary that adjust based on success.
    - player asset value secured.
    - once the initial investment is made should be cheaper to run as focus mores to the academy and youth signing. Converbelt of talent.
    - happy to sell players if their value raises and can make a profit.
    - gives the players more security in their job and pay.
    - incentives improvment of players based on bonus.
Basically what they are going to try and do is make chelsea more sustainable in the long run. So they can start to take profits out of the club and increase the value to potential buyong in 10-15 years.

The club are balancing PSR, meritocracy, manager philosophy and director philosophy. It’s not just one thing. Being soulless is way overblown. If you’re good enough, they’ll keep you as an academy player (Colwill and James). If you’re on the bubble they’ll consider the other aspects of club balance. New players being churned in and out hopefully leaves the club with the best of their buys. I’ll patiently support my club and not add to the negativity.

I get it but you cant complain about chelsea having too many players then complain about them forcing people out. Conor was offered a contract and if he didn't accept it the best business decision is to sell. Dont agree with then signing Joao but you can't have it both ways. The 'squad is too big and people need to be sold but it cant be X person' argument doesn't make sense. Same with Chalobah, hes not good enough and needs to go as a result (because the squad is too big to accommodate someone just for the sake of them being "propa chels"). Chelsea fans have always fettishised players just because they are from the club no matter their quality (Charly Musonda was the next messi, Lewis Baker/Josh McEchran/dujon sterling etc)

@@chrismcqueen5134 They have multiple sects of players, the prospects for the 1st team that will come in next year, the players for the academy then the players for loans and reselling.
If there were a full network for the multi club model there wouldn't be this mess to actual organise the business model.
The points people are making on the youth players of the past just doesn't make any sense; half those players weren't of the level to keep the team where we'd want to be and there were a group of players I wouldn't have sold but they funded Lukaku's transfer under Roman, but even then they would not have had a look.
To the outside to other clubs it seems like a gamble, but when you've got a club with an ability to sell players for good amounts then as long as they can spread the cost with amortisation they don't see it as a risk, the same way every club has a fluctuating transfer budget.
There's the first team players, then the ones they'll sell with the amount needed to break even decreasing by the years left on the contract.

Chelsea hoping that these youngsters will come good in 3-5 years is laughable. One of the biggest ways to learn and grow as a team is having the presence of Veterans. Thiago Silva is now no more, and with Sterling leaving they are relying on the experience of a few players in their mid-twenties. This could all go one of two ways; either very bad, or somewhat decent. Nothing more.

As a American just getting into the epl, I don’t get why pushing out a squad player who doesn’t fit the style is some kinda travesty. In us sports, one of the most common cliches is “it’s a business”. Baseball, who’s structure is most similar to the epl (with minor league teams being like academy), will trade kids as young as 16 or never call up/ pay players who’ve been in the minor league teams for 10 years. I don’t know anything about Gallagher but “people who know what the clubs about” doesn’t win games like talent does. And you’ve gotta do everything to win no feelings involved.

Let’s not forget that we’re talking about transfer fees alone, other income and expenditure isn’t relevant when we’re talking about Chelsea’s spending. If Chelsea spend £1bn on players, on 10 year contracts, player amortisation makes that £100m per year for 10 years meaning £300m needing to be raised in a 3 year FFP/PSR assessment period. In that period, a club can make a £105m loss with no action taken, plus a further £15m loss, with little consequence, over £15m would result in the loss having to be covered by an equity investment, rather than an owners loan (I’m sure he’s got mates who will lend him £20m if needs be). Let’s say that Chelsea are operating at allowing a loss of hitting the £120m ‘allowed’ loss, meaning they need to raise £180m in a three year period. According to Transfermarkt, they’ve made £380m in player sales in the last 2 years alone which pays for the next 6 years (2 assessment periods)🤯 Of course, the more they spend, the more they will have to make and once other clubs realise what they’re doing, they’ll either stop buying Chelsea players and Chelsea will likely go into administration or everyone will copy Chelsea, which is most probably what will happen. Insert Jim’s video title - How Todd Boehly RUINED Football - Of course, the figures I’ve used for their spending and contracts are round and not completely accurate but you get the gist.

We were living what every fan ultimately wants and dreams of. I like how Gallagher got “pushed” out. Where did he get pushed out to? Chelsea got an offer from Atleti and they accept. Where’s the pushing out? He’s going to a club playing in UCL with a great squad and coach. If that’s pushing out I’d love to get pushed out of my job. And don’t say “oh he was training away” that’s because of the deal in limbo between Chelsea and Atleti but they for sure were gonna get the deal done. A better “pushed” out example is Chalobah. Someone that’s better than most of our defenders but since he’s pure profit he has to bite the bullet.

The only reasonable explanation I could come up with for Chelsea's plan, in terms of transfers/long contracts, is this: I believe they're giving out long 7 year contracts for 2 reasons. 1st Reason: Pay out those transfers over the 7 year deal, therefore having to pay less in installments per year. 2nd Reason: If they need to sell a player that isn't doing well, their value won't decrease because they have such long contracts. For example, Mudryk is shit. But if he was on the last year of his contract, they'd only be able to get like 15m for him. But if they sell him now, he still has 5 years left on his deal. So they could ask for more.

17 year old slug here, I personally don't watch MOTD anymore and instead just watch the sky highlights i want to on youtube and will watch other youtubers talking tactics, and I think it pretty much does the same thing that watching an impartial TV channel would, as you get multiple different sides of the story, all of which likely have some bias, which turns out to balance itself out. Only thing is, social media algorithms find a way to only show you the side of the story you'll nod your head to (kind of like how you might only talk politics with your parents as a kid), so it's really a two steps forward two steps backward sort of thing. Moral of the story, i should really start watching MOTD again.
