Is the initial velocity always zero?

Not really. Initial velocity depends on the starting point shown on the graph or in the question. Whenever they use the word "from rest ", initial velocity is always zero. If not then check on the graph and see where the line graph is starting and that will be the initial velocity.

If you look the graph,teacher calculates distan so we have total distan;50+30=80
average speed(V)=Total-Distance/Total-Time,so we have both (80m and 8 Sec)
80m/8sec=8m/s
8m/s is average is peed of whole journey for the car
