To calculate the distance an object has travelled using a velocity v time graph you must calculate the area under the graph.
You would firstly divide the graph into rectangles, squares and triangles.
The area under a triangle is the distance an object moved while it was accelerating or decelerating. To calculate the distance travelled by an object while it was changing velocity, you would use the equation base x height divided by 2.
The area under a rectangle or square is the distance an object moved while it was moving at a constant velocity. To calculate the distance travelled by an object while it was travelling at a constant velocity, you would use the equation base x height.

Thank you so much, this video saves me so much time . I'll recommend this video to my classmates 😅.. Though I have one question , the first question "extension" it says to calculate the acceleration of the car at sections (a,b and c)
For my answer a= -2.4 m/s²
Is this the correct answer?
You just saved me 10 hours of research
So happy this video has helped you! Check out kayscience.com for more resources if you need them
10 hours? 💀
@@ayena417 What will happen if there is a square in positive x axis and triangle in negative x axis.. Should we subtract.?
@@-tae.verse- Yes, negative velocity means you're going in the opposite direction losing distance, but if you were asked for displacement you would add it instead.
@@ayena417 shouldn't it be the opposite, like we should add when we r going to find distance? Cuz distance is not a vector
for once in my life i actually understood science thank you
Absolutely amazing... I've missed the Kinematics classes and now I have my test on the upcoming days.. and this is the place I look up to.. wonderfully explained 💜✨

You can also do:
( sum of 2 heights ) x b
------------------
2
That can also give you the answer for calculating the distance on a line which doesn't touch the x-axis
Your the ONLY person who states how to get the base when it doesnt start at zero thank you😭😭😭
Sir I have a doubt. What if the point A is located somewhere else except 0m/s. We should create a Dotted line from A to c horizontally or we should take the whole to find the area under the graph?
Getting all worked up about deceleration, looked in my notes in a teams, had no answers. But this video saved me. Thank you, thank you, thank you... ♥️

@@KayScience Okay thank you, will check it out.
UR AMAZING😭😭
Doesn’t the area under a velocity time graph give you the displacement? please explain this to me I’m so so confused 🥹🥹😭😭
Do you got your answer from somewhere else ? Please reply
@@shivam_kumar_09888i would also like to know. i’m writing in literally 10hrs💔
This video is very useful, saved me a lot of time !
Thank you so much. I was struggling with this but now I know it clearly.
thaaaaank you tell your friends about us
thanks man this helped alot good explaination
Glad it helped
Can u only use triangles, squares and rectangles what about trapeziums
This is actually easy thanks to you I know it now yayyy✨✨✨
Woooooo
Thank you so much, never understood and this helped me so much. ❤
You deserves my respect
You are a life saver
Thanks for helping!😁😁
You are very very welcome ☺️☺️
Thankyou so much Mr. you saved my marks in test ... 😊
THANK YOU!
Sir in this case the displacement will be 0 as the velocity is also 0..??
Amazing explanation! 10/10 :)
Thank you!
Helped a lot, thanks!
Sir thank you for the help

Simply Amazing
Thanks it helped a lot
my g
Thanks so much
Thanks alot
Is distance ans displacement is same for velocity time graph😕
What will happen if there is a square in positive x axis and triangle in negative x axis.. Should we subtract.?
Ur the best but what about displacement, is it the same equation?
he just did displacement he didn't do distance
Thank you sir
My G
Thank you so much sir
My teacher spent 2weeks teaching this and I didn't understand him but u spent 5mins and I understand
thank yoooou tell your friends about us!
@@KayScience I will
Thanks man
My inner third eye just opened my god...
wont u get displacement by finding area under a velocity time graph tho??
yeah I’m so confused…. could u please explain it 🥹🥹😭 so does this mean the distance = displacement or,,, I’m so lost
Is it possible to find the acceleration at one particular point ?
Thanks g
what about just counting the blocks under?
Love it! Great idea.
@@KayScience does it work though ?
Praise God
Thank you^.^
but area under v-t graph gives displacement right it does not need to be the same value for distance
but this will give you distance right, not displacement?
Thanks alottt
I HAVE A QUESTION...... FOR AREA SHOULD NOT IT BE M square?? Please reply😢😢
Hi I was wondering how do you calculate the distance on a point where the shape is neither a Traingle or a rectangle?
The only way I could think of is using calculus, but I am still looking for a non-calculus solution also.
I cant see the answers for the last question. can you please remove all of the links so I can check my work?
We have all of our questions and answers available on www.kayscience.com! :)
is there an explanation for when the triangle formed is disconnected from the x axis and in the middle of the graph
yooooooooooooooooo i figured it out
add the initial speed and final speed, multiply by your time interval, divide by 2, and badabingbadaboom you're good
thank you mr @KayScience
To calculate the distsnce travelled during constant velocity: What do you mean by - It could be either the above.
I have question you have two triangles but in my paper there is only one and rectangle together how to find distance bro
im pretty sure you need to find the area of it as a trapezium instead
@@varunparida8772 why so rude? i’m just helping u
@@xiaolongbaos i am so sorry for that iam just pranking on you for viedo don't take it seriously i am friendly😄😄
@@varunparida8772 haha it’s ok!
@@xiaolongbaos today was my maths exam whatever which country is your
It was a nice video
How displacement is there The object started and then reached at the
same position after some time So how displacement is made in this case?? Can you tell me...
But if distance = speed x time then wouldn’t it just be 8 x 80 to get the distance?
How could the distance and displacement is same in this graph 🙂 ex:- find displacement from any point to any point in this graph this will be same
If you want to calculate the area of a square ,do you square the height
What if they don't give you velocity? How do you find the velocity.
displacement/ time
But since it's velocity, not speed, isn't this telling us displacement & not distance?
I have the same question
@Caleb Tuamoheloa No they are not same
I thought it was Speed x time
Average velocity of the carfor the whole journey
😢😢
But 360 +960+160 =1480 where did 1440 come from
It's 320 not 360 !
Thank you
