I always empty the small dust collection “bag” that came with my orbital sander before sanding a different species of wood. The saw dust can then be saved and mixed with glue and used as a species-specific wood filler.
Picking up my first orbital sander today, and thanks to you I feel confident about using it. You packed a lot of really practical info into 12 minutes. Kudos!
Thank you so much! I burned out my sander on its first use and now I know what I was doing wrong! I really appreciate you taking time to explain all these tips 🙏🏼
Thank you for making this video for us newbies., i found most videos don't take us (me), who don't know anything , into consideration. I appreciate you!
Thank you so much! I am working on a table top that is 50 plus years old. I grew up with it! I've been anxious about the project, so I started with one of the leafs. After watching your video it went quite well and I now I know how the sander works best and have the confidence to finish the table!
Great video mate, honestly I appreciate the upload immensely. I like that you explain the reasoning behind each tip, accounting for different situations and not just assuming the viewers' intended works. Top tier presenting skills.
Wow! You're the BOMB! I'm just getting started (sort of) with using my sanders properly. I knew orbital sanders have a very important role in prepping surfaces. I stripped and sanded my kitchen cabinets 4 years ago and OMG do I regret that dumb decision. Now, however, I'm going to start restoring furniture (for myself--not to sell). I want to do a good job. This video is so clear and covers almost everything. Thank you so much for this!!
Clinton, clear and precise instruction. Amazing how much we can learn after we’re convinced we know everything! It’s all new to me and I appreciate lessons at this level. Many thanks!
grateful for your pointer! i just one and need all thr help I can get. i just bought the hand hook loop manual sanding block.. never knew they existed! thanks
I often work with sanders, (festool mostly) dont put too mutch pressure on it, take it easy, use a shopvac if possible and take brakes to let your hands rest. With grits you should not skip a lot, i usually only use 120. But if you go through the grits dont add more than 50%. 80 to 120, 120 to 180, 180 to 240. If you even want to go that high. Ps if you sand difficult areas before you assemble it you wont need to get into difficult spots
Been enjoying the DIYs. First time I've been able to view one during the day. Personal care assisting for my wife has been tiring (God Bless Our First Responders !) And as always may God Bless you & yours! Have fun & please keep on building & informing us. Thanks for sharing👍🏻
Where have they been all my life? I've only just discovered you can get 'sanding pad savers'. It's a double hook and loop disc in the size you want that stays on your pad. You then rip off and replace from that, not the pad. This extends the life of your machine no end.
Oh wow Thank you so much for this tutorial, I am a crafter and I have not used sanders yet cir drills etc, ur he Best, Thank you , I can refer to this video and others you make when I am ready. 👍👍😁 Looking forward to your next videos. I do have a question when I have holes in my drywalls and fix them and put puddy on them I wonder if we can use these kind of Sanders to smooth them out?
I have a makita orbital sander with dust collector and it works really well. Ofc, I still get a little dust on me, but when I look inside the bag after sanding, jezus, its almost full and all of that could have been on me. NOPE. Thank god for that bag.
I bought an orbital sander to sand my resin art. Can i apply water to the art piece and use the sander on it. I heard applying water stops dust from flying everywhere.
Velcro = brand name hook & loop. If they used the name Velcro, they'd have to pay royalties. Absolutely LOVE the hand sander that takes the disks! Gonna look for one of those. =) *edit - I got a Bandit brand respirator intended for auto body repair guys to use. If you think your dust mask is good, try one of these and realize how much was getting through the small mask. They cost about $30, but are comfortable, forms a good seal even with my having a beard, and are super effective.*
@@SpecificLove7 Thank you. Also, you can use a ROS on more than just wood... I did concrete at my sister's house & the surface flaked off because I had too much water in it. Put a 40 grit pad on & it made short work of evening things up.
Just got one of those hook and loop foam Sanders actually I bought a 3 pack. They work incredible. So simple but the pressures very even it doesn’t dig in and pull out any of your wood filler out. And now I only buy 5 inch discs less to store. Also great video love the tip about cardboard.
Hi complete sanding nub here . i'm going to attempt sanding down my staircase ... I just ordered a Ryobi orbital . Looking at dust collectors right now ( hopefully I can find one the just plugs into the sander ) Do you know if the 3M cubitron II disc will stick to the Ryobi ? I don't think Net-back disc stick to velcro ... & i have no clue as to witch " " protective Disc / Backing Pad " " i need to get to do this. So Please if any one can help .... I can get started on this ... thanx
Thank you for this. I lied to my boss and told him I'm comfortable using a sander and he immediately asked me to sand and re-stain his desk today and I'm so scared I'll screw it up 😂
I have a problem, I am new to wood working, and tried to use a sanding attachment on a Bosh drill machine, I find it very difficult to control the direction. The damn 😡 thing seems to have a mind of it's own.
How do you like the Ryobi cordless sander compared to the Rigid? I’m on the Ryobi line and am considering getting a cordless sander. I have a corded Rigid but I sand mostly outside and it’s nice not having to drag out an extension cord and have it get in the way all the time. Just not sure if a Ryobi is sufficient or if I should go higher end. I don’t mind the extra coat. Thanks
I've found that the cordless ones aren't worth it. Why? It works much better with a vacuum hose. In fact, there are models with built-in suction. They are not much more money and they have waay better dust management.
Putting too much pressure on your sander stops the disc from spinning. It will probably still oscillate and that movement disguises the fact that it's not spinning.
"Let the machine do the work" is a pretty solid mantra for me regardless of the tool.
Very True!
Could even expand that to nearly every hand tool as well.
For long sanding sessions, listening to music/podcasts/audio books really makes the time go by faster.
That is such a great tip!
3M WorkTunes with an MP3 player are a great combination for in the shop. =)
For any chore, I love podcasts! Makes the work so much more enjoyable!
Tfs!
I always empty the small dust collection “bag” that came with my orbital sander before sanding a different species of wood. The saw dust can then be saved and mixed with glue and used as a species-specific wood filler.
That is a very good point, thank you for the idea.
Brilliant idea!!
Picking up my first orbital sander today, and thanks to you I feel confident about using it. You packed a lot of really practical info into 12 minutes. Kudos!
Wish I asked TH-cam how to sand before I actually started sanding. Now I understand where I've gone wrong. Thank you
Using my brand new sander on a project for my kid's dresser. Super helpful for an absolute novice!
Using a couple of appropriate sized dowels in the sander's pad, help align the disc with the dust collection holes. Great video, thanks for the tips.
That could definitely work, thank you
THIS is how you do an educational video for everyone else on TH-cam!!! Thanks you, new Sub!
Very thorough, informative discussion. Glad I watched. Thank you for posting.

Sounds like you’re off to a great start! Enjoy the project, and remember that practice makes perfect!

Thank you for this!! So many good tips before I take my first orbital sander out of its box!! 😬😄

I always like to think that the day we stop learning is the day we die, so never stop learning.

Thank you Dan
New to sanding, thanks this was very helpful.
So happy that we could be helpful

Hey Anthony, sounds like you have a difficult job, I wish you the best.
When would you recommend to use the Sanding Interface Pads, if at all? Is this more for metal sanding?
Thanks for the marking your project will a pencil tip 😊
Great video!! Very clear and informative. Thank you!
precious advices, thank you!

This sander could remove too much too fast for drywall, I would not recommend it for that.
Thank you so much 👍👍😊
I’m a newbie to furniture sanding, great tips here! Need to know how to use the various pads that go under the sandpaper!
Good work as always Clinton. I really appreciate these basic level videos.
Thanks Mark
This video is great! Thank you!! 😊😊
Very informative, thanks for sharing.
Nice points, Clinton, thank you!
Thanks Rick
really helpful. tnx for bringing it
Thanks! Very informative.
You Rock. Every tip was justified. Thank you for emphasizing N95. Save your lungs...
Very informative 👍Thanks.
Thanks. Fast and simple explanation for beginners. By the way. Great workshop. Nicely organized.
thanks so much! Great tips
Thank you for the tips!
Great tips! Thanks 👍
Really useful thanks mate.
When sanding paint between coats, switch pads more often. Especially on tables and large surfaces.
Always use an interface pad on your sander. Those are cheaper and easier to replace than the sanders pad.

best tips
Good tips. Thanks
Thank you
Cool Video!!! Thanks For The Info!!!! 👍😎😁

That is a very good question and I'm not exactly sure.
You could try with a strong vacuum, or very sticky tape (ducktape)

I put a link to the hand sander in the description just in case you're interested.

I made a hand sander out of a piece of 2x2 scrap and velcro strips
How do you collect the dust from going everywhere? Shop vac? These are great tips by the way.
I usually use the dust collector or shop vac to catch the dust. And sometimes I just go outside for a quick sanding.
Empty the dust bag more often.

Do you have any suggestions for heating the sap off? I blow threw my sandpaper quite quickly sanding wood with even a small amount of sap on it
dude... you are too funny... great tips! enjoyed the video!
If you start with wood that is already smooth don't use a coarser grit like 60 or 80. You'll make it worse.
Very good tip, thank you
Thank you for this. I lied to my boss and told him I'm comfortable using a sander and he immediately asked me to sand and re-stain his desk today and I'm so scared I'll screw it up 😂
Thqnk you. That was some awesome tips.

If I have a sander with adjustable speeds, what speed should I use for what wood?
You will just have to test it out to get the best results.
Get the Bauer At harbor freight which is cheap and not much vibration

If you already have a bunch of Ryobi batteries for your other tools, then I would probably just consider getting the same brand sander.
Ryobi makes great tools. Very accurate & heavy duty.
Get the new ryobi sander
The mask idea is the best, I use left over Covid masks!
Why is my brand new Skil detail sander bouncing all the time? Help
What would require a hire speed or what would require a lower speed
Nice Video.

How long do your batteries last while sanding?
I'm never really timed it, but I would guess 5 to 10 minutes for the smallest battery.
Practice on an unwanted piece of wood first 👍

My sander gets hot is that normal?
It is the most horrible sander ever.
You left out a USA made hi brand, SurfPrep. Buy USA.
Great tips! Thank you!!
