- In this video, we are putting Pro Acryl shades up against Games Workshop and Army Painter! A friend of mine has been raving about these products so I thought I'd get hold of some and put them to the test so that I could see for myself, and share the results with you!

The GW shades are an incredibly tough act to beat. No matter where you go in the mini painting hobby, you will always find someone with a pot of Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade in their toolbox. And for good reason, they're just that good.
I think GW Contrast paints thinned with contrast medium is by far the best acrylic method, but oil washes are the next level and much cheaper
Is there a cheaper alternative to contrast medium? Could you use glazing medium for instance or does that produce a different effect?
@@PlacentaFishcakes only ever use contrast medium with it, it’s not that expensive though to buy I don’t think?
@@PlacentaFishcakes depending on your use case. If you want to keep properties of contrast paints, just make it less pigmented, I don't think there is a direct replacement. But if you don't expect a contrast effect and not rely a lot on pooling (like with airbrush or use it as filter), you can use any another thinner, including water
Definitely think GW shades are where it’s at for me right now. After your review I would even probably prefer GW contrast paints + contrast medium for shades over PA’s selection
Two Thin Coats washes very good if you liked the filtering effect of the old Agrax.
I did a full review of them - I wasn't that thrilled with them - but I did love the paints themselves
The black from pro acryl is really good but I had the same experience with the brown being too faint. Think I'll have to get more agrax
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Cheers
These paints seem like decent alternatives,if you want a lighter contrast or acryllic colour. I might try em one day
Absolutely love pro acryl's regular paints. Haven't had chance to use their washes but gw shades have always done the job for me. AK dark brown wash is really good and worth a go if you get chance
I love the paint range too!
The acrylics are outstanding from pa I literally every color. Still using gws shades
Where do you get all the shoulder pads to practice on?
I've had these years they were in my bitsbox - the intercessor kit will have some left overs as well
Maybe I'm wrong here, but I feel like a brown wash should do far better on that darkness of red. I have no experience with PA but if the Agrax Earthshade could do that good a job, then you'd think the PA should too?
I have to say, if you looking at a shade that you won't be using much, the Army Painter ones do just fine. £2 something for a shade I'll use at very irregular use is very reasonable for the price to quality scale.
Vallejo washes? I'm struggling with streaking washes
What brushes do you use? The ones I have the ends split up and makes it super hard to control.
I use Rosemary and Co Series 33 - should be a link in the video description
Look up 'brush repair' or 'caring for 40k/hobby brushes'
even if you buy a $50 brush...without the right care, the ends will split
This is due to paint drying in the ferrule (where the brush 'fur' meets the brush 'handle')
Usually brush soap + acetone/methylated spirits will break down the bried paint
I love the black wash from PA. It’s a softer shade than Nuln oil. Everything else GW does better.
thanks for sharing your review/opinion. Good video!
Cheers Eric
PA is lighter and seem like nice for soft shade meanwhile GW is stronger
I wasnt impressed with the PA at first then it ruined a mini that worked on two nights. Now it is just for terrain
How did it ruin a mini?
@@andrewblundall5475 it forms a skin i didn’t know that, I saw it pool where i didn’t want it so i went to remove that bit with a dryer brush. The skin peeled back making a nasty transition. I only use this for terrain now.
