An amazing showcase of the New Saudi Arabia that we’ve all waited and wished for. Some questions that still haunt many; “will there be human rights, political representation, a more fair and equitable distribution of wealth and power among Saudi Arabia’s inhabitants, as well as the checks and balances needed to safe-guard, guide and sustain these amazing economic developments?
Will there be the social, cultural and political shifts needed for this vision, beyond opening cinemas and allowing women to drive? Is this the will of a nation or a select mortal few?
Will Saudi Arabia continue to be one of the biggest markets in the world for Johnny Walker Whiskey despite the current bans imposed on the sale and consumption of alcohol, or will Suadis finally be able to expect their government to regulate, tax and more effectively cope with this “vice” and its abuse (and that of other vices as well) and without resorting to draconian corporal punishment again? Will humanity and logic rule?”
It’s about a mindset shift, where dealing with problems openly, transparently and logically comes more comfortably and naturally, and where it’s not just about appearances of modernity and civility.
I don’t want to downplay or criticize the signs of reform, progress and development in Saudi Arabia that we’re witnessing. They are amazing. I just hope they’re built on deeply rooted and solid foundations that are inclusive enough to resist the challenges that lay ahead.
With the rich heritage that Saudi Arabia has, the human and natural resources the country is blessed with, the cash, investments and leverage they already have everywhere in the world, I don’t see why Saudi Arabia can’t shoot for being in the top five global economies (where it would hopefully be able to avoid another Trump-style shake-down in the future). But that would require the human rights that can fuel and safeguard such an achievement.
Impossible? Well, someone from there has done it before, more than 1400 ago. PBUH. And he did it with enlightenment, humanity and logic. He didn’t have any of what Saudis have at their disposal today.
