  • While my Subaru BRZ track car is still having its engine gremlins reworked, I've decided to up the game a little and get something that's hopefully going to hold up better on the track.
    So, I ended up buying a 2005 Lotus Elise.

      They're great cars and there isn't much out there other than the Alfa 4C that comes close. Heck, I've seen plenty of them being used as daily drivers in the UK when I lived there.
      I'll have to do a bit of work on it over the winter, but I can't wait for autocross and track season to come around.

      Very much agree with the "one or the other". What amused me is that Lotus very likely kept the Toyota steering lock or wherever else they sourced it from, so the steering lock also has a "start" position, which does, well, nothing.

    I am feeling better and better about buying my 2009 Elise SC new. Drove it yesterday on the road: temp in the 60s (F, duh) on freeway and then on one of the most technical and fun public roads in the area. It has sweeping curves; hairpin corners; tight, elevation change esses; 90 mph straights between corners; off-camber tricky down hill curves (the car gets lighter - be careful!).
    With dense air and a relatively new air filter, it is a treat. Hope mine continues to hold its value or better.
    Have a deposit on an Emira with 4 cylinder twin turbo dual clutch. Wondering if I really want that? 1000 pounds heavier with only an extra 142 BHP. I have time though, since Lotus now says I can't get one in my garage until 2024.

    I also had a Subaru BRZ, I changed it for a Lotus Elise s220 CR. great car great road holding mid-drive rear-wheel drive, it drifts less but it goes much faster, now it's never been 2 years that I changed the BRZ for the Lotus Elise and I am madly in love with it, the BRZ had not convinced me first of all for the engine too slow 170 hp on the bench other than 200 hp .. in the wet with the Michelin primacy it is very dangerous he tried to kill me in every corner faced at more than 40 km \ h .. while the Lotus is in another category it is almost a supercar .. for example my Elise 260 hp as 0 \ 100 performance in 4.2 seconds and 270 km \ h as maximum speed .. from 0 \ 200 km \ h in 15 seconds, etc. etc. a missile between the curves, while on the straights exceeded 220 km \ h it is quite unstable especially the front which is too light it takes a nice splitter but I cannot put it because otherwise I would no longer be able to park the car in the garage. then as a design the Lotus elise is fantastic

    Hello, I am in the opposite way. Have an S1 Elise, thinking of a BRZ / GT86 because of extra seats and kids. Driving wise, would that be a serious compromise to do so? I am not interested in acceleration and high speeds; more willing to know about handling and overall driving feeling. Any tip regarding track day use would also be welcome. Thanks!

    • @garagemoneypit
      @garagemoneypit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BRZ/GT86 is a very different car. I don't think it's a "compromise" in a major sense, just different. You're not really going to get the kind of feedback through the steering and the butt-o-meter that you get in an Elise, but that's pretty much par for the course for any car.
      That said, have a very close looks at the extra "seats" - IME they're best used folded down transporting something rather than subjecting a human to them :) so it might not quite give you the practicality you're after.

  • @JoseGarcia-yk3dl

      @garagemoneypit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jose, well, I did end up selling the BRZ and am keeping the Elise for the time being so that might answer your question already :).
      That said, the Elise is considerably less practical and in my opinion much more of a "second car" than a BRZ/GT86 at least if you live the US. It would be different if I still lived in the UK or elsewhere in Europe where I could walk to the shops.
      From a driving experience perspective though, the Elise wins hands down. There aren't may road cars that give you this level of feedback and involvement.

      The, when properly aligned and on fresh rubber, she truly telegraphs her intentions as you accelerate through a turn. She lets you know very gently that the back is about to come out and I typically just hold her there. Smoothness is key. I run on the very soft Yoko's and love them.
