    Watching Virginia washing bottles reminded me of my [much] younger days working in a pub. One of the bars didn't have a glass washing machine, but instead, a double sink. One containing hot soapy water to wash, the other, absolutely scalding hot water to rinse. This method was far superior to the fancy machines. It was quicker, didn't block-up or break down and left the glasses literally squeaky clean.
    I would trust hand washing over any machine process every time.
    I wonder if our delivered milk sometimes turns sour for no apparent reason because the bottles are not as clean as they possibly could be - this is, I must add, a rare occurrence.
    I have to agree with the other commentators, that the milk does look very, very good indeed!

      We used to have a “Bar-Maid” washer equipped with milk bottle brushes. But we found that we could wash faster, and better by hand. Still a lot of work though! Haha!

    This is the way milk was packaged 80 years ago and it should all be packaged this way, from a local dairy. Thanks!

    Love watching you guys do the whole process from cow to bottle. I hope to some day get into the deal that you guys are doing. I feel like it’s a better product coming directly from the farm.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest advantage is of course keeping a bigger piece of the pie for yourself. The biggest disadvantage is how much extra time and effort it takes. People really underestimate that. The processing/distribution/marketing probably takes more time and effort than the actual dairy farming. Unfortunately we have to do what we do because it’s the only path forward for farms our size. That’s why we joined the Columbia Community Creamery (cccmilk.org) board, to one day provide a market and fair pay to small farmers.

    Looks delicious and definitely a labor of love! It’s a shame that more farms aren’t like this and it’s also a shame that delicious milk has to be pasteurized. On occasion I’ll treat myself to some local raw milk but unfortunately it’s a bit of a drive to get it, otherwise it’s all I would drink

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in Washington State, raw milk retail sales are legal. You can find raw milk in the grocery store. We choose to vat pasteurize as it is the best compromise for us. The low temperature doesn’t alter the flavor of the milk. I can’t tell the difference between our bottled milk and that from the bulk tank, and neither can some of our customers who have switched from raw milk. It also allows us to do value added products like flavored milks, yogurt, and fresh cheeses. I can tolerate HTST milk, but find UHT downright disgusting!

    well ,the income has started slowly again and bills have to be paid i quess. question for you guys, what does grade A dairy mean, just wondering, greetings from a Dutch dairyfarmer

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The grades are based upon how the milk is used. The sanitation requirements for the farms is also based upon the grades. For example, fresh, fluid milk has to be grade A, whilst manufactured products such as cheese and butter can be made from grade B. Many Amish farms who still ship milk in cans are grade B. It also varies by state, as some states will license both grade A and B dairy farms. But states like Washington require all dairy farms meet grade A standards regardless of how the milk is used.
