    So it seems I had the submarine surprise strikes slightly wrong. I thought subs got a surprise strike in-between all rounds of combat (if no destroyer), but also fired along with other units during regular rounds.
    In any case, we were playing that if no destroyer is present, submarines get to essentially fire twice, but any hits do not eliminate casualties immediately.
    Perhaps I'll make a video explaining submarine warfare soon. Thank to Hatlessspider and Cam Hart for the clarifications 👍

      Subs always get to use sneak shot attacks if no destroyer is present but if they have a destroyer then they cancel out all subs abilities

      Forcing an opponent to build destroyers is a great way to clear your opponents wealth so they have fewer transports for land invasions.

    I still remember one of my first games of Axis & Allies classic version back in the late 1990s. My friend and neighbor Alex planned to invade India with Japan. All that stood between his invasion army and my ill prepared India was a lone transport in the sea zone surrounding India. You need know that back then, according to the rules, a transport could defend @1 and control a sea zone. In order to carry out his invasion he had to destroy my British transport first. He sent two Japanese fighters to sink the British transport for good and to get his own transports into the sea zone for the invasion. Now you can already guess what happened...
    First round: his two fighters both missed scoring at least @3 while my transport scored a hit.
    Second round: he didn't score again with his one dice while my transport shot his other Zero out of the sky.
    The odds for scoring two hits with one dice in a row with only scoring @1 are 1 to 36 while his chances of scoring one hit with three dice @3 were close to 100 per cent. But yet the heroic British transport fended off the Japanese invasion for another round, helping me to reinforce and keep the jewel of the crown. And win the game with this pivotal moment.

    The greatest game of axis and Allie’s I ever played was a 4 player game I was controlling the axis powers and I had the best luck ever when on turn 1 if I remember I had built 3 transports with Germany and was poised to strike England the following turn and on the British turn I had shot down their air force like 2 airplanes got shot down because I was rolling ones like crazy and then on my German turn I took out England also I had captured Karelia on the same turn then on my following German turn I had placed infantry their and fighter on England and then pushed into Russia and captured Russia then America tried to counter attack England but failed in retaking it so after americas turn I had won the game because you have to take out 2 capitals in the classic version of axis and Allie’s to win the game so that’s my all time favorite game I ever played

    I believe since there is no destroyer present, the sub's attacks are all surprise attacks, meaning if the hit destroys the enemy ship, that ship will not get a retaliatory attack.
    Also I believe the fighters could land on the island within that sea zone. Looks like Solomon Islands?

    • @CorporalClegg
      @CorporalClegg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank for your comment, I was aware of these rules. Can't remember the exact details (this video is just a recreation)
      If I remember right, the UK/US captured the Solomon Islands, and the Japanese BB and AC moved in to destroy the transport.
      Surprise strikes occur in between rounds of combat. Surprise strike hits eliminate a sea unit immediately, but regular sub hits can be countered - atleast that's what we were playing

    • @camhart9245
      @camhart9245 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CorporalClegg Thanks for the video, I enjoyed the dramatic re-creation, lol! @Hatlessspider is correct, with no destroyer present the sub will have a surprise attack for EVERY round of combat, so when you hit the AC it would not have had a chance to counter back (and of course the planes were never able to fire back at the sub)... what should have happened was your opponent chose to lose the AC in the 2nd round (as its defensive roll is much lower than the BB - and the planes can't land anyway, so no point in keeping it), and then in the 3rd round when you scored the hit, the BB would not have been eligible to fire back... Either way, you won, as you should have - just pointing out that if playing according to official OOB rules your sub would have survived... the video would have been less dramatic, then, however, lol!!!

      @CorporalClegg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, unless the surprise strikes miss, and the regular sub rolls hit, which is what must have happened. We were a good 4 or 5 beers into the game at this point and I can't remember exactly how it happened, but I remember it was an intense battle and glorious victory!

      @@CorporalClegg If no destroyer is present, no such thing as "regular sub rolls"... subs will continually (and only) roll in the sneak attack round... it does sound like an epic game! I know what you mean about being hard to remember... :)

      @CorporalClegg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm is that so? Gonna have to check back through the rulebook then! I always thought they were seperate rolls in-between rounds of combat! Maybe that's how it is in 42.2 which is what I'm used to?

    Great re-creation of an epic battle! I remember one game of classic years ago (not sure we had the rules completely right), on Germany's 1st turn they bought dice for tech and got both heavy bombers and long range aircraft. That same turn they went ahead with a Sealion attack, and London fell in G1, before UK could do anything 🤣

    My oldest favorite "Commander in Chief" rules. I was axis doing the German turtling game, my cousins were getting good working the allies under one commander, turtling is a must early, so I'm surviving in my shell a while and my Japan is now facing English and US naval building directly in the Pacific, everyone building submarines up with the carriers alongside. The allied fleets got my Japan in retreat from their commander in chief stack, about to face certain unfavorable battle odds, the last moment in fly's the German bomber to Tokyo, immediately placing 3 stacked German control markers declaring Germany as commander in chief of Japan, one turn ahead of the UK commander in chief pacific. Japan gets one last build, all submarines, the US moved their huge pile in range and the German commander in Chief made the attack achieving victory from apparent defeat. I don't recall who won that game but it's my favorite 1st edition commander in chief memory. That's a brutal combination, it should be on the technology tree at least, good game ending tool

    I was at YGs tourney. Our game started late so we were the last ones to be playing. It was 1 to nothing because they had done a sealion. Two turns in a row we launched attacks to take out the fleet and recapture England. Last roll came down to 1 v 1 for the tie. My tank destroyed his piece in a literal fireball. Fire department had to be ca.....forget it. I won the battle and staved off defeat. Did almost the same thing the next day taking Sidney for the tie.

    Epic dice battles, braveries all around. I recall that anything hit by an attacking submarine can't shoot back except destroyers. The submarine first strike rule is every round of battle that no destroyer is present. I've often thought taking damage on a battleship from a submarine hit would still disqualify the battleship from returning fire. The rules I remember say sub hits don't get to shoot back, sunk is not used, the battleship ain't sunk, but it just took a sub hit, no shooting back ..but I've never verified this.
    Super submarines for Japan, yeah, adding the sub casualties couldn't have even returned fire, you basically have a sub free shot turn 1 no destroyer, by hitting the battleship second round, only the carrier was qualified to shoot back. I'd have to try everytime, the odds aren't as horrible as first appearance

    Anniversary Edition, 1941 Scenario, Eastern Font, some years back. Leningrad had fallen, Stalingrad had fallen, and the numerically superior Nazi force descended from all directions on Moscow for the final kill... Dice flew in their dozens.... it appeared defeat was imminent for the Soviets... plastic men, tanks, armour, artillery and aircraft fell in droves into the casualty pile... And at the end of it all, after the final dramatic role of the dice, the sole remaining unit on the entire Eastern Front was a single Soviet tank sitting on Moscow! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own two eyes!

All that against 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 3 fighters and a bomber, however I rolled straight sixes, the Brit’s took me out, all my ships without taking out a single British ship, I was infuriated further more I also lost French indochina to 3 infantry and 1 fighter yet I had 2 infantry and a fighter and he didn’t lose a single troop, I did get some good kills on my Japanese turn I took out a fleet of 1 American aircraft carrier with a plane and a destroyer, and also a British battleship and cruiser

    DAS BOOT!(Or the British version THE JOLLY GOOD SUB!)A fleet like that without a destroyer deserves to be sunk(despite the incredible odds against it), anyway as your countrymen would say"A JOLLY GOOD SHOW OLE CHAP🇬🇧"! Reminds me of the TH-cam game when my American bomber sunk a battleship along with a couple of transports, and that Italian ship missed my aircraft THREE STRAIGHT TIMES! At the time my side was getting killed by the Axis forces, so out of desperation I said to myself "Heck, why not!"(I couldn't believe it!), and it was a real morale booster for my team if only temporary! I still have that anniversary game saved on my TH-cam video from last year where I'm really whooping it up being caught in the moment, too bad you don't still have the video evidence from that battle.... or do you?! 👍👏
