This is one of the matches that Eurosport commentator Frew McMillan talked about as being one of Federer 'breakout' matches or where his run of greatness REALLY took off. Yeah he won Wimbledon that year for his first major, but then had some up and downs, losing to Nalbandian in the 4th round at the USO, but this was a turning point of sorts. He was really reading everything that Mirnyi hit at him.
Lol. I love these type of tennis players. They stick to their strengths/game plan even though they know it isn't working. He just kept coming to net over and over because he knows he has NO chance of beating Federer at the base-line.
I disagree with people saying that today Federer is a better player than before, in my opinion from 2003 to 2005 he was better in all the aspect of the game, and i'm not referring only to the speed on court, that naturally decreases with years, his technique was way better on every shot. Here he really looks unbeatable.
I think..he had great confidence back then and of course faster and stronger, remember he hardly met defensive player with heavy topspin like Nadal, retriever like Djokovic and Murray,or players like Del Potro, Berdych..but Strokes wise he's better now, and has better racquet today...the cons: he's slower, not as consistent as before and i would say less confidence
he looks better in this match as vs.Djokovic, only becaurce Mirnyi had no baseline game.he played only serve and volley.it is easyer to make passive shot winners as winner from basline
Better in all aspects honestly doesn't make sense, you can't just watch his play then and overlay it to the present, everything was different from his racquet technology and size, string technology, to court speed to ball type to opponents and their styles to Roger's body to Roger's tactical knowledge and mindset to experience. I mean, it's comparing apples with oranges but logic says he cannot have been better between 03-05 than some latter years at some point. I do love watching this Roger as well.
I detest one-dimensional players like Mirnyi. Incredibly boring to watch! Meanwhile Federer does all he does better and has room to spare for all the other parts of the tennis game inaccessible to Mirnyi...
Fed is smooth as silk.
Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.

If raz say wow you know that your video is important!
For so long, nobody could effectively return his serve. So many free points

Agree 100%. This period (00 to 2007) was Federer at his very best imo. Borderline unplayable.
Exactly the best and most dominant player ever

Did Federer win this tournament?
Yes he beat Moya in the singles final 3x 6-3 and also won doubles with Allegro, beating Mirnyi and Bhupathi
Thank you!
Roger should reach the heaven and play against borg and laver for the best of all times
nice timing! does anyone know, why Fed played Vienna instead of Basel in 2002 and 2003?
He played both in 2002 and 2003.
oh yeah stupid me, guess i've even seen Basel highlights on this channel from those years
Basel and Vienna are played the same week these years so I can see how the confusion happened.
He played in Basel in 2002 (lost to Nalbandian in SF) & 2003 ( lost to Ljubicic in R2)
what racket is Fed using?
Pro staff 90 from 2002 to 2013
