I really wish they had shown just how mad Ainz had been with Lupus, practically making the others around them choke up -
A nervous-looking Lupusregina entered Ainz’s office. The panic and unease of being suddenly summoned was written all over her face. Inside the office were Lupusregina, the regular maid Sixth, the battle maid Narberal, Aura, who was the one most familiar with the forest, the Eight Edge Assassins on the ceiling, and the owner of the room, Ainz. Incidentally, Albedo was still in confinement.
Lupusregina was about to prostrate before Ainz when he interrupted her.
“Lupusregina, is there something you’ve kept from me?”
After seeing the confused look on her face, he wondered if she did not know about it after all. Ainz decided to repeat what he had heard about the Giant of the East and the Serpent of the West from the Adventurer’s Guild.
However, as he saw that Lupusregina seemed to have known about this long before, Ainz’s mood rapidly deteriorated. He exhaled long and loud.
“So you were aware of this, then?”
“Yes. About that-”
“You fool!”
Ruled by anger, Ainz’s wrath-filled shout echoed through the room.
As the others recoiled like they had been struck by lightning, Ainz felt something suppress his emotions, but even after the peak of rage was cut off, his anger surged up again, and there was no way he could fully rein in his ire.
“Why did you not report this to me? Were you trying to keep this from me?”
“N-no! Nothing like that!”
“Then why? Why did none of this reach me at all! What was the reason for that?”
“B-because I th-thought it wasn’t a big deal, s-so I didn’t report…”
For some reason, the sight of the frightened battle maid peeking up at him only incensed him further.
“Lupusregina Beta! I am thoroughly disappointed in you!!”
Lupusregina was not the only one who flinched at this. Nabe and Sixth were trembling too, and the Eight Edge Assassins on the ceiling seemed to have frozen up as well.
“I gave you discretion over handling the village, but that does not mean you can do as you please! You were told to report anything that happened in the village, anything at all, so what is the meaning of this!”
“That’s…”
Ainz’s face twisted as he looked down on Lupusregina, who was unable to answer him.
This was an unforgivable sin for a worker; no, for anyone.
Hi, friends! How are you?
As always, I am going to complement and make some clarifications of this chapter based on information from the light novels.
The first scene is historical, because Lupusregina becomes the first NPC that Ainz officially tells that she has "let him down". In the novel it is described that Ainz's rage was so great that his power was felt and Lupusregina, along with everyone present) trembled in terror.
But the funny thing is the reason for Ainz's anger, which is not so clear to others and neither does the Anime show it correctly. AInz is a Japanese, who have a tendency to take themselves too seriously. Also, he was a salaried office worker in a rather demanding and somewhat exploitative company, so there are certain mistakes that drive him a little crazy.
In Japan there is a kind of motto for workers called HO - REN - SO; this means REPORT, COMMUNICATE AND CONSULT. It's a mantra for workers that everyone knows from school and Ainz has it engraved deep in his bones (lol).
That's why Ainz gets so angry when Lupusregina tells him: "I didn't think that was important enough to inform you of that" And it is that in Japan a worker has to report EVERYTHING to his superior, even the smallest thing, to ensure the proper functioning of the company.
Only when Ainz sees a scared Lupusregina does he begin to realize that perhaps she is unaware of this principle of workers and then he comes to the conclusion that it is his fault for not having trained her for the job nor explain to her the importance of the task.
In the novel Albedo is not present in this scene and in her place is the regular maid, that´s because she is still imprisoned for having tried to rape Ainz. One can notice that the reactions she has here are too deadpan for that reason and I don't understand why the animators decided to do this. The thing is, thanks to that, the part where Ainz tries to remember the Brita thing and the red potion lasts a bit longer and is funnier.
There's a part where Ainz mentions that Nferea´s work is so important that he'd rather lock him up in Nazarick to make sure no one interrupts his work. Narberal suggests doing it immediately, but Ainz replies that, after discussing it with Demiurge, he came to the conclusion that fear was not such a good motivation for an alchemist and that it was best to make him feel a debt of gratitude so that he would work better.
Immediately afterwards proceeds the search for the monsters. The scene of Ainz touching Aura's waist is purely because he's worried that she's not growing properly. This is because in Nazarick there are many items that free one from eating and sleeping, something that the guardians usually use to be able to watch and work 24 hours a day. But in this new world this could bring bad consequences and Ainz fears that Aura is not growing due to lack of food.
Aura replies that she will eat well to grow up and make Shalltear jealous. This is clearly a reference to the size of her breasts, which in Aura's case can still grow, but since Shalltear is undead she is unable to develop physically.
Naturally the scene looks weird. It is typical of Overlord to put Ainz in situations that can be misinterpreted as perverted, as happened with Crush Lulu during the negotiation for Saryushu's resurrection or with Mare when he handed over the ring. But it's pure humor, Ainz is not a degenerate.
The problem is that Aura misinterprets him because, even though she looks like a girl, she is over 70 years old. And when Ainz says that she is "thinking about the future" she believes that there will come a time when she will have to marry the Overlord (and she doesn't seem to dislike the idea). But far from it, Ainz is thinking of finding a dark elf elementary school to send her and Mare to. Ainz simply sees the twins as little children that he has to take care of as a surrogate father, instead of Bukubukuchagama, so he is particularly tender with them. For this reason, when Aura tells him that she "likes it" he assumes that it is the same as when children under 4 years old say the same thing to their parents.
When they finally reach the base of the Eastern Giant, they see that there are a bunch of logs placed haphazardly around the entrance in a sad attempt to imitate the cabin that Aura built as "Fake Nazarick".
Later, during the negotiations, Ainz is lucky that the Western Serpent was there, since the Naga had come alone to negotiate with Guu, since he could easily escape with her invisibility... something that sadly doesn't work with him. Ainz.
The rest is basically what you saw in the Anime: Ainz is so powerful that despite being a mage, he can physically destroy those weak monsters and, in the end, he uses an instant death magic, against which regeneration is useless. The only thing worth noting is that the Serpent of the West mentions that, at some point in the past, the dark elves lived in the Forest of Tob but left it for some unknown reason.
I hope you two found this information interesting and also a little useful.
Every time I see a character's racial abilities (like Ainz's Aura of Despair) I can't help but imagine Yggdrasil being a balancing nightmare for its devs.
In the novels it explains that most of these status inflicting abilities only work on those a certain number of levels lower than you, unless you buff them with other skills. The reason ainz has so many of these abilities is that he is kinda playing an rp character. He only just barely ranks in the top 50% of players in terms of individual power. Plus the range is low, if a caster is close enough for their aura to be proccing then they're probably being punched lol.
@@corbinmills9335 I mean the racials in general, not just that one. That is a *LOT* of mostly passive/toggleable abilities to balance, for the devs. Not even to mention all the busted ass spells and items (iirc, there's so many spells, that it's next to impossible for one person to memorize them all. One of Ainz's strengths is the sheer number of spells he has memorized) Hell, some World Items are the equivalent of using an external cheating device/program.
To be fair the dev’s didn’t ‘have’ to balance things, because they kept all the data hidden from players. No one knew how to get a specific class, or even what skills or spells that class would have, everything found out by players or guilds was also typically kept secret, so I think most of the time, you wouldn’t even have enough information to know if something was actually unbalanced or not to even file a complaint, and most complaints could probably be ignored with a “skill issue” type of argument since the devs were the only ones who knew the full scope of the games abilities.
It actually wasn’t that great in Yggdrasil. But it’s extremely powerful in the New World. For two basic reasons, the first is that it’s really only good for low level things. In the in the NW level 30 in considered to be extremely powerful so there is that. So it’s no surprise that it is as powerful as it is.
The second is that a lot of spells and skills changed when they got to the New World. So now some of them actually do things that weren’t possible in Yggdrasil.
Mind you, Ainz didn't even cast a spell. Aura of Despair is the normal Aura around the Overlord class of Undead he is. He usually has it turned off completely. Back in Yggdrassil it wasn't a bother to other high level players, but it can be (as you see in this) fatal to New Worlders.

4:15 the undead Ainz can summon still have a timer if summoned normally without a corpse, or if they exceed a certain level (even if a corpse was used)
