I really don't get all the hate for You Only Live Twice. It cuts back on Thunderball's gadgets, has a great Blofeld scheme, Bond actually develops a nice relationship with Aki, and Donald Pleasence's performance as Blofeld is the right mix of creepy, unexpected, and intimidation.
In Y.O.L.T. they didn't pay attention to the details, as they did in ''The Spy Who Loved Me'' (a remake of Y.O.L.T.) ten years later. About Pleasence, I would prefer to play Henderson. Ηis murder would not be true - like Bond in Hong Kong - and in the volcano he would say that he is Blofeld's half brother.
When Connery was cast as Bond, he became Bond but when Fleming wrote in more characterisation, he made Bond like Connery. Connery is Bond, forever, no matter who gets cast next.
My wife and I had the priviledge of attending the gala tribute to Sean Connery at Lincoln Center/Avery Fischer hall in 1995 and I was told by Lee Pfeffer, an author and organizer of the event that Connery insisted that the film clips from Bond movies be limited to a montage lasting six or seven minutes. He harbors great hostility towards Saltzman and Broccolli, perhaps with good reason, based upon inadequate compensation for his Bond work and residuals.
I meant "I'm NOT saying I love the guy"... I like him, but Connery is my favorite by far. And I meant Craig was closer to the Bond in the novels than any other, besides Dalton.
Here is another piece of Bond trivia, or more precisely Sean Connery trivia. At 1:58 you show a tiny bit of the scene in which Sean sits in the back seat of a big car, being driven from Kingston airport after his arrival in Jamaica. Later, Connery and driver get into a very one-sided fistfight, with SC kicking the smaller man's butt all over the place. The trivia? This was Connery's audition scene for the role. And I think I remember that Ian Fleming himself was there. Auditions stopped immed
The old James Bond movies are so nice, I don't like the new ones nearly as much (don't like them much at all, to be honest). This is what I grew up with, they used to air Bond 'marathons' quite regularly, featuring the old movies. They have much more charm, and a much stronger feeling of adventure.
Isn't it ironic that Ian Fleming wrote a book 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' which was essentially a love letter to Connery, and then Connery leaves the role for Lazenby to step into? Still even with the change of bond OHMSS is still one of the finest Bond movies, and Lazenby did a decent job considering he was a first time actor and model. Shame he didn't do more.
Connery would had did OHMSS but the snow wasn't right , so instead the did YOLT . They fixed it now but bck in the day and on the old VHS tapes would have " James Bond will be back in OHMSS " at the end of the credits .
Connery was a tough guy and that projected clearly in his Bond films. Michael Caine, his good friend relates an anecdote in his autobiography in which he and Connery were listening to a singer perform in a club, and a group of toughs were heckling the singer. Connery turned to the men and asked politely for them to stop; when they continued, he got up and knocked three of them out cold.
The scene at the table made of gold, with Bond strapped down and the laser heading seemingly unstoppable for his family jewels. The quotes by first Bond and then Goldfinger .... JB: "Do you expect me to talk?!?" Auric Goldfinger: "No, Mr. Bond ... I EXPECT YOU TO DIE!!!" was something like number 20 on the AFI (American Film Institute) list of top 100 quotes from the movies. Whoever thought up that back-and-forth certainly ensured a piece of movie history for himself/herself!!
You Only Live Twice has always been a favorite of mine. It was the first Bond film I saw. Always loved Mie Hamma and Donald Pleasence is probably my favorite Bloefeld. The action scenes are pretty spectacular but I agree Connery was beginning to show his age, he still very much looks like Bond though and handles himself quite well. By the time Diamonds are Forever rolled around, however he had really aged considerably.
I wish people would stop bashing Craig SIMPLY because he's not Connery, Craig and Dalton are actually the closest to the way Bond was originally written. All of the actors have added something to the Bond Series.
Probably my third or fourth time watching this series, I wish you'd go back and give each Bond film a full in depth review like you did with the later ones. Is that a possibility? :)
Having viewed your entire "line-up" I must commend your endeavor...priceless. To the critics? There's simply NOTHING as comprehensive in scope as this series, so.... I'd recommend that the naysayers view the entire series, and to remember one thing: ENJOY IT!!! A truly educational, entertaining, nostalgic romp through the Bond Film Genre....KUDOS!! Glad to subscribed! P.S. Thanks for the links to the continuing saga.
Well if that is the case I completely understand Connery's bitterness towards the Bond franchise. If Connery has indeed been inadequately compensated for his tremendous contribution, then he should make no further contributions to any Bond DVD or any Bond tribute ceremony or anything to with Bond. Connery is the ONLY great James Bond. The rest were all missing something. Connery had the toughness, the physical presence, the ruthless look, the humour, the charisma and everything you could want.
Haphazard, i was only 13 years old when T-ball was released, and yes, the jetpack was incredibly impressive for 1964 technology!! The entire audience did a big intake of air, in huge surprise, when he took off from the rooftop with it. They/we could not believe it!! Yes, it looks corny now. Did you know that Sean used the very same jetpack for his entrance on the David Letterman show about 20 years ago?
Excellently done for a non professional! The narrating could be a little clearer and less monotone (it just sounds like you're a bit camera shy and need to relax a little) but the clips and information are amazing! This looks like it took "a ton" of work, but it definitely paid off! Great idea making this. 9 out of 10! Personally I like Donald Pleasance though; he was in the Great Escape and... He was freaking Dr. Loomis for Pete's sake, one of the most bad ass characters ever, from Halloween!
@2011TREADSTONE, Yes! I was impressed with Connery's praise for Craig and even Moore. I was never really the biggest fan of Moore until I understood that he was trying to put his own spin on Bond without rehashing what Connery did, so in that regard I can respect that. Yet some people simply can't understand that with a 40 year old franchise things need to be shook up from time to time.
Some Bond trivia. When Ian Fleming conceived the Bond character, he's on record as saying he visualized him as looking like the popular American songwriter ("Stardust" and many other million sellers) Hoagy Carmichael. Crazy? But if you look at the illustrations of Bond in the Fleming books, they do resemble Carmichael and Connery as well -- both with thin, angular facial features and a similar nose.
Technically, Q (or Major Boothroyd) does appear in DR. NO (played by Peter Burton) even though he's not played by Desmond Llewelyn. Q in DR. NO, replaces Bond's gun in the one scene that he's in.
well I am only 25 and here is my take on James Bond thus far... I have only seen Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig films until today...I watched The Man w/ the Golden Gun. Honestly, I was very impressed. Roger Moore did a great job IMO. Oh yea and Mary Goodnight was breathtaking! Time to start watching the rest of the films to form my true opinion on the best Bond
the scene where the maker of this videos says about escape with jetpack, there are alot othee scenes from other james bond films where you would say how would he escape without gagdets like moonraker scene where they're below rocket about to be launched.
It's easy to say Connery was the best Bond but the quality of his Bond films did drop as time went on. Of course you can't put that solely on him but even the narrator comments how by the time they got to "You Only Live Twice" he was looking bored with the part. Connery is still so iconic though it's hard not to admire how great he was.
I have tremendous admiration and affection for Sean Connery, and I wholeheartedly agree that his first three Bond films Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger are the best of the 22 film series. I am also aware that Connery has retired from acting. Notwithstanding this, his adamant refusal to participate even minimally in the 50th anniversary of the Bond series,i.e. a few interviews or DVD commentary for the new boxed set is disheartening.
I bet a prime Connery would win a real life fight against all the other Bond actors. Connery was a black belt in Karate and a bodybuilding champion and he was Scottish and we all know how tough Scottish people are. By the did you know that in the Connery vs Robert Shaw train fight in "From Russia with love", the director just decided to let them hit eachother for real. Connery and Shaw are both big tough men and both agreed to it, and that is why it looks so realistic.
Nice job, however Sean Connery is on record many times saying "THUNDERBALL" was his favorite Bond venture. Too, I think you missed out on "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE" having the most interesting pre title sequence.
Well, perhaps he is on record over the years as having liked both. I only saw the THUNDERBALL comment. I could see why he liked FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE, it is so close to the spirit of Ian Fleming's novel.
It's just a quote from an article I read a million years ago, sometime in the late '80's, I think...I am certain you are correct in saying that he said the same of FRWL...he could've very easily liked them both equally well.
You Only Live Twice was the first connery bond film i ever saw, and I personally think its His best Next to Goldfinger, It had Plenty of action, Connery really did well in the action scenes the gadgets were cool and even though The Plot was a bit far-fetched It's delivery was good, and Donald Pleasance IS blofeld, He had the right look he had the voice, and his screen presence is unmatched compared to the others who followed.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People is about an old Irishman who's the caretaker for an old mansion. He's being replaced by Michael(Sean Connery), who falls for the old man's daughter. Darby(the old man) is well acquainted with the local Leprechauns, who help him play matchmaker for the youngins.
Now as far as who's the closest?Thats a great question. There are 4 people out of the 6 that were successful because they were around for a long time. All 4 have at least one thing that bond has and has something special for the character that they can do from each other. For me even though moore did the most and brosnan is my favorite and craig is one badd ass.I have to say connery. i loved his accent. loved one of his quotes, when he said, ''but of course''. he said that in the movie (the rock) when nickalas cage told him his name. Does anybody know the real reason why conney was replaced by Rger moore to play bond I mean connery was younger not that that has anything to do with the replacedment.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS! Excuse this impertinent question - but are you by any means professionally promoting anything? In that case... I'd view your efforts differently, let's say. Are you just a private person behind the best hommage à Sean as 007 I've ever experienced!? Awesome piece of work!!! Thks+brgds
@DOMuricu I thought thunderball was almoest as perfect.Connery said that his favorite that he did was Thunderball and From Russia With Love! YOLT is good but its not great!I actually liked DAF,whats your reason for not liking it?
He has done more than enough for the Bond franchise. Maybe he isn't an attention seeker and doesn't need to be in the spotlight. Maybe he doesn't think so highly of himself and thinks other people(actors, directors etc) were just as important to the Bond franchise as he was and therefore he might not feel that his presence in the 50th anniversary is that necessary. Connery always strikes me as a humble person.
Wow, I said "in fact", that's asking for trouble. I prefer his 1 movie over any of Moore's (haven't seen TSWLM tho, apparently his best, will do soon), but Dalton is Fleming's Bond, Craig is badass, and Brosnan is Moore 2.0 with worse movies given (except for Goldeneye of course).
And as for craigs bond. He's just more as a darker approach. He just happen to come in the time the bourne films are made. We are in a time were we see what bond was like in his early days before he becomes that 00 we all know about. You see real bond fans like us understand that. And the people who think they are bond fans and are not keep saying oh there copying bourne. Read more into first and ask questions before you comment. There's a lot more that meets the eye.
To be honest, I have enjoyed every Bond film I have watched. And that is all off them, except OHMSS (gotta see it soon). Sure some are worse than others, and I have some favorites but all in all I didn`t find none off them a bad movie. Die Another Day may be some off the worst ones, but I still find it entertaining. My favorite bonds are probarly Connery, Brosnan and Moore. I still liked Dalton and Craig. Wonder what I will think off Lazenby.
Hey man thats fine.If you think he's the best then hey more power to you.As I said I respect everyone's opinion. What did you mean by when you said until arguably craig?
You just made my day with that comment. I always liked the fact that Connery was tough in real life. I know somebody who thinks Lazenby might beat Connery in a fight. I think I will tell that person the story you told me and then he will realise that Connery would beat lazenby easily. Don't get me wrong Lazenby would beat Moore easily and would probably beat Dalton and Brosnan too. Daniel Craig and Lazenby is a toss up but Connery would have too much for Lazenby.
@JudasAngel666 i was 8yrs old when my father took me 2 c goldfinger. loved it went nuts over sean connery. theater played dr. no, from russia with love and goldfinger together. went at 12 noon then asked my uncle to take me to see them again that night. 3 movies 4 50 cents. saw thunderball, you only live twice in 1967. then lansbury did on her maj. secret servis. hated lansbury. like him now. diamonds was seans last. live and let die. hated it. hated moore. u were brought up with moore. takecare
I know all connery movies word for word, except for boat scene in begining of russia with love, anyone knows guy rowing and girl says, thanks, anyone????
I really don't get all the hate for You Only Live Twice. It cuts back on Thunderball's gadgets, has a great Blofeld scheme, Bond actually develops a nice relationship with Aki, and Donald Pleasence's performance as Blofeld is the right mix of creepy, unexpected, and intimidation.

I think after 12 years I am back to watch it again
I liked You Only Live Twice, personally all of the first six movies are essential viewing.
The old James Bond movies are so nice, I don't like the new ones nearly as much (don't like them much at all, to be honest).

I'm glad he didn't do more. Hes a pathetic joke of an actor.
Matt Allen Okay that's fine, but it is still one of the best Bond films. Lazenby did not hurt it.
Connery would had did OHMSS but the snow wasn't right , so instead the did YOLT . They fixed it now but bck in the day and on the old VHS tapes would have " James Bond will be back in OHMSS " at the end of the credits .
I actually admire Lazenby for this. Given his zero acting experience, he had the toughest job having to take on the part from an established icon.
Sean Connery is still my favorite James Bond considering his first four films.
hey, thanks for this and the rest of the series. very well done. you put a lot of effort into all of this! really enjoyed!
bond was the man and sean was the best bond ever.
The scene at the table made of gold, with Bond strapped down and the laser heading seemingly unstoppable for his family jewels. The quotes by first Bond and then Goldfinger .... Great vid! Sean Connery is the best! His style for 007 matches it perfectly, but like any other Bond actor, he got older. Great video once again!
You Only Live Twice has always been a favorite of mine. It was the first Bond film I saw. Always loved Mie Hamma and Donald Pleasence is probably my favorite Bloefeld. Probably my third or fourth time watching this series, I wish you'd go back and give each Bond film a full in depth review like you did with the later ones. Is that a possibility? :)
Having viewed your entire "line-up" I must commend your endeavor...priceless.

Absolutely agree! Connery is the real bond and he's the only true one.
From Russia with Love, my favourite bond movie. The movie has a great 'feel' to it.
Wow man where did you get that song
I can't find that version of the Bond theme you
played in the beginning of the video
Haphazard, i was only 13 years old when T-ball was released, and yes, the jetpack was incredibly impressive for 1964 technology!! Tx for this series of Bond in a retrospective! Really, thanks. My only complaint: your videos could be longer.
sooooo, are you saying that dalton is closer
to the books then connery is then?
Excellently done for a non professional! Sean Connery's best Bond movie is You Only Live Twice
amazing documentary man, this should be aired on tv
Do you have this in a higher resolution?
I have a question---where can I get the intro music for this video?
dang , aweomse arrangement of the theme!
Could you tell me the background music? I'vr never heard it before
@DOMuricu Are you sure you didn't get the names mixed up?
Some Bond trivia. When Ian Fleming conceived the Bond character, he's on record as saying he visualized him as looking like the popular American songwriter ("Stardust" and many other million sellers) Hoagy Carmichael. Crazy? But if you look at the illustrations of Bond in the Fleming books, they do resemble Carmichael and Connery as well -- both with thin, angular facial features and a similar nose.
Which version of the bond theme do you use to open this awesome review series?
your documentary is really great. my favourite bond movie is Live and Let die.
Sean Connery is my favorite James bond character in his all movies.
Excellent commentary. Very well researched too.
From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball are Sean Connerys best bond films!
Technically, Q (or Major Boothroyd) does appear in DR. NO (played by Peter Burton) even though he's not played by Desmond Llewelyn. Q in DR. NO, replaces Bond's gun in the one scene that he's in.
7:00 that was the best scene that I think made "You Only Live Twice"!
well I am only 25 and here is my take on James Bond thus far...
I have only seen Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig films until today...I watched The Man w/ the Golden Gun. Honestly, I was very impressed. Roger Moore did a great job IMO. Oh yea and Mary Goodnight was breathtaking!

@DOMuricu When you say HS do you mean Harry saltzman?
What version of the Bond theme did you use at the beginning, and where might I be able to find it?
Love the reviews, by the way.
That's a well edited trailer to start this video with!
I know but you can't Download it anywhere
real nice. I like all of the early movies, including OHMSS
CONNERY WAS one of my favorite bonds yo
I have tremendous admiration and affection for Sean Connery, and I wholeheartedly agree that his first three Bond films Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger are the best of the 22 film series. I am also aware that Connery has retired from acting. Notwithstanding this, his adamant refusal to participate even minimally in the 50th anniversary of the Bond series,i.e. a few interviews or DVD commentary for the new boxed set is disheartening.
You only live twice is actually probably a contendor for my favorite bond film
I bet a prime Connery would win a real life fight against all the other Bond actors. Connery was a black belt in Karate and a bodybuilding champion and he was Scottish and we all know how tough Scottish people are. By the did you know that in the Connery vs Robert Shaw train fight in "From Russia with love", the director just decided to let them hit eachother for real. The best Bond years!
The king is dead. May his memory live forever. Sean Connery 25 August 1930 - 31 October 2020
🥺
Would you posted your old Wonder Woman trailer? That was awesome
never seen it. whats it about?
Nice job, however Sean Connery is on record many times saying "THUNDERBALL" was his favorite Bond venture. Too, I think you missed out on "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE" having the most interesting pre title sequence.
1060michaelg I'm pretty sure Connery's personal favorite was From Russia With Love actually.
Well, perhaps he is on record over the years as having liked both. I only saw the THUNDERBALL comment. I could see why he liked FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE, it is so close to the spirit of Ian Fleming's novel.
I have never heared him say the Thunderball thing before, but the more you know I guess :)
It's just a quote from an article I read a million years ago, sometime in the late '80's, I think...I am certain you are correct in saying that he said the same of FRWL...he could've very easily liked them both equally well.
Thunderball was my first Bond film when i was eight . I heard so much of Goldfinger the year before but got my chance the next film .
Absolutely, no doubt about that!
There's no competition. Fleming even gave Bond Scottish origins because he was so impressed with Connery.
I agree your right. We live in a different time now.
Great job! Thanks for making this!
Even the 3 unofficial films?
Now as far as who's the closest?Thats a great question.
There are 4 people out of the 6 that were successful
because they were around for a long time. All 4 have
at least one thing that bond has and has something
special for the character that they can do from each
other. For me even though moore did the most and brosnan
is my favorite and craig is one badd ass.I have to say connery.
He had everything he marked the character. Now remember
there is no perfect bond.
What about Diamonds are Forever?
Well dont get me started on dalton. He didnt do too much
of a good job in my book. But if he's your favorite I respect
that.We all have are own opinions.Never say never though
who knows what there gonna do in the future.Moore's type
of era could come back. But the reason why it wont come
back is because we have to be different in every way.The
style,the character,and action.Who's your first favorite BTW?
With all other Bonds I think "how close does he come to Connery?", there is no competition.
Same here. I used to dislike Roger when i was younger. But now i consider him the best Bond.
0:00 - 0:58 AMAZING!!!
I agree
I really would have wanted Cary Grant to be the first Bond. He was awesome in "North By Northwest"!
i loved his accent. loved one of his quotes, when he said, ''but of course''. he said that in the movie (the rock) when nickalas cage told him his name. (which i forget now) sean said, ''but of course you are''. In the rock. i kind of thought of him as james bond. he was a spy. british secret servis. when they had to scuba dive, he said he had done it before. if you watch the rock again u will see he could of been bond. of course they couldent say that becourse of copyright stuff. miss him.
Does anybody know the real reason why conney was replaced by Rger moore to play bond I mean connery was younger not that that has anything to do with the replacedment.
I know you the author of this to be top. Keep it coming.
Tough for me to decide between the first three films but Goldfinger would most likely get my vote as the best of the series.
dude did u buy all bond dvds to make this?
awesome vid man!sean connery is by far the best james bond!:)
Thks+brgds
In Licence to Kill, he is. That's my opinion, if you think it's anyone other than Moore or Brosnan, I can see where you're coming from.
great upload
@DOMuricu I thought thunderball was almoest as perfect.Connery said
that his favorite that he did was Thunderball and From Russia With Love!
YOLT is good but its not great!I actually liked DAF,whats your reason for
not liking it?
We are in a time were we see what bond was like in his early
days before he becomes that 00 we all know about. You see real
bond fans like us understand that. And the people who think they
are bond fans and are not keep saying oh there copying bourne.
Read more into first and ask questions before you comment. There's
a lot more that meets the eye.
What about diamonds are forever? shean played in that too.
Hey man thats fine.If you think he's the best then
hey more power to you.As I said I respect everyone's
opinion. What did you mean by when you said until
arguably craig?
You just made my day with that comment. I always liked the fact that Connery was tough in real life. I know somebody who thinks Lazenby might beat Connery in a fight. I think I will tell that person the story you told me and then he will realise that Connery would beat lazenby easily. Don't get me wrong Lazenby would beat Moore easily and would probably beat Dalton and Brosnan too. Daniel Craig and Lazenby is a toss up but Connery would have too much for Lazenby.
@joker0187 I think they're saying they like Roger Moore movies better. There's no identity mistaken.
And I like how you spelled mofo out.
What about brosnan?
Darby O'Gill! Great flick...
