@@judsonsnell Funny enough, most of the guys you see at NAMM are just doing guitar gymnastics and sweeping arpeggios left and right. I enjoyed that he just played through a couple of his tunes.

@@bdamotta Stephen and Greg Kubacki (Carbomb) were the two guys I looked forward to the most. I've always respected that Stephen clearly knows how to express himself thru guitar/songwriting more than many virtuosic players I've been around myself. Greg falls on the opposite end of the spectrum as far as actual technique/intensity goes, but describes his process and skill level largely the same. Absolute breath of fresh air these days.

Cos its built upon feelings.. not the typical shredder that just wants to show off technique.. high technique will never mean good music.. Steph is a talented song writer.. he's music certaily goes beyond !

You CAN be flashy & Shreddy but it doesn’t mean you HAVE to be! You can Create something tasteful and unique which ever way you choose to go!

One of the best Deftones albums.... Stephen's melodies...Chino's vocals were on point... the bass groves... drumming not overplayed... I forgot how much I love that song.
Kinda wish the mix on stephs guitar was a lot louder. Could barely hear it over the songs. Still rad to see steph at an event like this tho.
I'm more into technical music these days but Steph will always be an influence for me with his simple yet heavy melodic style. Awesome to see him at namm even though he isn't a "shredder".. he doesn't need to be :)
Steph is my hero. I can't tell you how many days I've spent researching his setup for guitar, like in depth reviews and research. I hope I could meet him some day and pick his brain.

I play over complicated shit all the time and that doesn't work with a band that can't keep up. This guy has his shit together musically and doesn't need to get any better. I enjoyed this just as much as the shredders if not more

Do any of you realize that KEN SUSI from UNEARTH is the Fishman spokesman. It's very cool to see him in this light. Hes a great guitar player. Hes always hustled hard for his band. I am glad to see him succeed outside of unearth!! Fluence pickups fucking rule.

Always loved his tone, never oversaturated , such a clear drive if there's such a thing. I think he's a mesa boogie guy, his tone comes from amp and drive he uses. I think so...now I wanna look it up lol.

Its so funny watching these types of videos expecting slurs of arpeggios, scales and finger crawling solos then here goes stephen doing simple guitar chords holding it for couple of seconds. Its like a reminiscence of the first time you learned what chords are but yet hes rocking hard. So its all about the passion guys

fluence are great pickups, I played some recently. I still like my alumatones a little better, though. lighter. no battery. both are very clear, high output, high signal/noise ration.

Passion doesn't come from playing slower. Passion and feeling comes from the way the notes and intervals build tension and resolve tension. You can build and resolve tension while "shredding"
I hear passion in technical shreds, because I hear the tension build and resolve.
Stephen very much builds and resolves tension in ways that are powerful and interesting and he doesn’t have to do too much to do that. Which is why he’s a great and influential player to many, myself included.
Of course having more chops is just having more tools in your arsenal to do such a thing, but people’s point isn’t to downplay shredding but to say that it’s just a tool and not necessary or a goalpost you have to reach to make great and enjoyable music.
