She knew how important this performance was-It’s her debut for the U.S. audience-and it’s her best performance yet.
I am so happy for her, I am crying
this song was a huge hit in the U.S. already, but I agree that she nailed this!
AGREED AND I AM SO PROUD OF HER.
Agreed.. She recreated Escapism once again. I am continuously blown away by how she reinvents this song every time she sings it and it feels like it was just born.
this wasn't her American TV debut she was on Steven colbert in 2023
the way NOT ONE LIVE has the same rendition of her songs.. omg she's amazing
EXACTLY THIS^^^^^^^ i love listening new live versions everytime
@@themusicbook8679huh?? you mean curse words lmaoo
@@elilicona9236 HER OWN MESSAGE!
@@themusicbook8679you sound pressed
Hit 700!
She knows this song been out and played forever now and so she ENSURES every performance is never the same. Incredible.
The fact that she is able to do that...I mean, that's true talent! Amazing!
It’s giving doja cat and say so and I’m here for it
it reminds me of what doja cat was doing for say so
As an SNL viewer of over 30 years (age showing), this has got to be one of the best performances ever. What an amazing rendition and the Amy Winehouse vibes are just icing on the cake.
Was thinking the exact same thing with the Winehouse vibes, just different than anything else.
You nailed it
old school too and I saw Ashley Simpson live lol to compare
indeed age showing and no
i'm not the only one! I was getting Amy Winehouse vibes too, i wonder if there's any inspiration there
I think she has 10 different renditions of Escapism. I LOVE all of them! Happy to see her on SNL🎉
Never have i ever liste to escapism original form in her live performance
Yes, she always recreates Escapism and it always sounds fresh. If you haven't checked it out, check out her own 4AM remix version, where she alters the lyrics and then gives it yet another twist
This might be my favourite yet!
and the royal albert hall version is my absolute fav 🎉❤
@@mirfangu her black mascara was absolutely beautiful too
So happy to see Raye get her much needed recognition. Her story is of great magnitude and talent out of this world. Also these arrangements are WILD. It’s so fun being a fan of hers.
Her story is so moving and the way she tells it through the album it’s such a amazing album
I was completely blown away, hearing this talent for the first time, watching SNL tonight. I'm a HUGE fan now!!! Love her style, her vocal prowess, arrangements and accompanying musicians and choir. Absolutely refreshing. And then to read she's written songs for Beyonce and Rhianna among others?? Tonight, I sense, she FINALLY broke into the American market, big time, in a way we haven't seen since 1964. Bravo RAYE!!!!
agree completely!!
@@five-clawdragonnever even heard of her before. She kinda steals the whole show… and Kristen is hosting!!
Selfishly I am so happy I got to see her in a tiny venue bc she was still pretty unknown in America. Excited to see her career explode now.
The CONTROL!!!! Her vocals are celestial, don't get me started on her range agility 🤯🤯🤯
I started listening to her in 2017 and let me tell you, she has BUILT those vocals UP! They’ve always been strong but she’s ridiculous 😍
You couldn't have described it any better. That's the word
she has an astonishing level of vocal control. dancing all over the scales, sounding like she's about to cry one second and confident and powerful the next, all while making it sound easy and relaxed. spellbinding.
So true, her voice is just incredible, she blew me away, I can't stop watching this!
This song never gets old I swear
my favorite of the past year
CLOCK THAT!!
Couldn't agree more. Head bounces every time those drums kick in! She's an unbelievable talent.
That's cause she keeps making it new with every performance... love it
@@akhereosumah5725 And it's also one of the best songs in decades.. 90s quality
Love how she leaves out all the curse words so elegantly 😂 She is amazing
New fan here. Getting 23 musicians live on that arrangement for SNL is incredible and she's super dynamic leading in the front. So cool.
New listener too, because she reminds me of my girl the late great Amy Winehouse.
@@kno3730me too
the way shes singing this , you can hear and feel the pain . 😩❤️❤️❤️
I know, she's wonderful! And I have to say the lyrics of the song...who don't those resonate with- we've all had that horrible "day after dumping" feeling where NOTHING will make you feel better - it's the pits! She really brought that back to me! (but in the best possible way, haha!)
CRYING
SHE ATE THIS VERSION UPPPP
This is hands down the best performance i´ve ever heard on SNL BRAVOOOOO
That's going a bit far for me, but I agree this was awesome and perfect for NYC. Great night on SNL!
Best I can remember myself. So i guess it is the best for me also.
Royal Albert hall was the best one, theres a live album, but no video out yet
Agree on every level
It’s good but woah!
How did she not get nominated for a Grammy is shocking!!! Especially for this song! I love her! Her album is amazing
What are you talking about? She won 6!!! Lol
@@LSarah36she won six brit awards, not grammys
The whole album is truly incredible. Best full album I've listened to in years.
@@daniellereynolds6235 facts!!!
She gave us her own postmodern jukebox version yaaasss maam
Haven't heard of Raye before; but after hearing her tonight, I'm DEFINITELY putting her on my replay playlist! SWEET JESUS MARY JOESPH that girl has some pipes! 🤩
The regular version of this song is my favorite of the year.. definitely search it
shes been around for a mad minute now. just not too big in the us. shes all over like every station on sirius.
Incase you haven't realised yet, this song doesn't usually sound much like this. The normal version is a lot better IMO
her album is fantastic!
She's amazing! It's so exciting to see her being introduced to US audiences 🥰
That performance was nuts. Wow.
This performance is actually out of this world 😭 her star power is insane she gave us vocals, lyrics and acting?! ATE!
THIS VERSION OF ESCAPISM IS BY THE FAR THE BEST IVE EVER SEEN
This woman has exactly zero business being this incredibly talented. What the fuck, girl, chill!
thats how I feel. like, come on, leave something to others........
@@DeniHashek I know right 😅
THIS ARRANGEMENT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD
I need this rendition as a remix on Spotify so bad. She's literally a legend already. Every time she's performed this song it's with a different composition. what an artist!
This woman is an ARTIST.
This rendition of this song is out of this world. The sound is like nothing else. This is my first time hearing Raye, and I'm an instant fan! Please please continue to explore this big band/scat/blues/soul/modern sound. I need a master of this rendition. I'm so glad I happened to watch SNL tonight to catch this magic as it was happening! ❤️🔥
Listen to the live version of her album (My 21st Century Symphony) it’s with a live orchestra, same kind of vibe as this performance I think!
@@lukeb2030Which live performance specifically? I've listened to a few different versions of this song and none of them come close to this one. Her whole soul is in this rendition.
her royal Albert hall performance is available on streaming and it's incredible
@@cinderpetrichor934 I would for sure check out the BAFTA performance. Even better than this one imho.
Raye and her team have an outstanding ability to develop different arrangements of her songs and play them live, as you'll find if you check out all the versions e.g. of Escapism on TH-cam. It appears that her US 'launch', with Coachella coming up soon (for an artist who swept the floor at the BRITS, yet didn't receive a single Grammy nomination a few weeks earlier, considering her album was released a full year before) merited an extra effort for SNL. I agree with the earlier comment - the whole Royal Albert Hall show with The Heritage Orchestra, arranged by Tom Richards, is amazing, especially the glorious (!) Escapism finale with the famous pipe organ and big choir ... check it out! :)
I have been a Raye fan for a long time and I am so happy to see her get this recognition. I hope this really breaks her into the US market casue she is 100% one of the best artists of this generation.
I understand and I agree!
I had never heard her before, I am in the US market, And I can tell you I am now an instant lifelong fan. And judging by the comments on this video and the other SNL song she did I'm not the only one.
Been here since Confidence and I feel so vindicated
Definitely

What a fantastic surprise to see her on SNL. The swagger, the confidence, the vulnerability...this one's a showstopper.
she deserves ALL OF THE ACCOLADES & ALL OF THE ATTENTION SHE IS GETTING. she has been hustling & mistreated & under appreciated & silenced for so much of her career & it makes me want to sob at how much love she's been receiving from the world this last year. & this performance is hANDS DOWN..... one of the best in snl history. she never does the same rendition twice & it is so evident that she lives & breathes music & being honest in her songwriting. RAYE- YOU DESERVE IT ALL. CONGRATS ON THIS HUGE MOMENT. YOU ARE SO LOVED 🥹💗🥹💗🥹
How she wasn’t nominated for ONE Grammy is wild to me….
She just crossing over to US now
wasnt on their radar. I was hoping her and PinkPantheress would score nominations after going platinum but it wasn't to be.
She won a lot of Brit awards but I would like to see her with a few Grammys. She’s a gem!
She’s just gaining traction in the US, so trust and believe she is someone to watch out for. She will have a Grammy within the next two years guaranteed. I’d be real nervous if I was one of the pop girlies rn!!
She’s been crossed over though. She toured and has been on the radio a lot. That’s how i discovered her. She’s just riding another high from the historic Brits win….as she should! She’s sublime!
I didn't think they made musicians like this anymore!? Seriously incredible!
shes independent!!
Exactly, 😭
I got to see her perform live in Nashville, TN in October. She was MAGNIFICENT! I also got to meet her and sit and chat with her for like 5-10 minutes. Raye is exactly who you hope she would be. A very sweet, humble, and genuine person. And absolutely stunning! It makes my heart so happy to see her getting the recognition she deserves.
The choir give me chills, I was really hoping she'd do a full version of this with choir after the Brits performance, she's phenomenal
I think this is officially the BEST first time SNL performance! I need this version on Spotify! 😍😍😍
I really loved this and I'm not one to rank things so I'll just say that Sturgill Simpson burned down the stage when he had his chance too.
I need both songs on spotify like yesterday!!
I got TH-cam Premium for this very reason. Don't have to wait for Spotify. I think it's worth the 14 bucks a month. @@XxcupcakesaysrawrxX7
As a UK fan so proud to see Raye showing the world her voice and talent!
STUNNING!!! So incredible to see this artist on such a big stage. She's been brilliant beyond brilliant for YEARS.
Completely overlooked at the Grammys but FINALLY the US is discovering Raye! What a fabulous performance. ❤
THE GRAMMY NEEDS HER BUT GRAMMY DIDN'T RECOGNIZE OUR QUEEN RAYE 😖 TALENTED ❤️
grammy just doesnt have taste 🤷♀
Grammy is straight shit. Her album is way better than the one who won AOTY
Love when I discover a new artist on SNL. She’s amazing. Just ordered her album.
I saw her live on the Brits about a month ago and did the same thing. Great album! You won't regret it
@@Redzone84387been listening to “Eacapism” since the Brit awards.
I had listened to her early (pre-breakout) stuff years ago, but completely missed out on her album until the Brit awards.
Her Album is absolutely incredible you'll love it, every song is amazing the best I've heard in a very long time the production is phenomenal.
Charisma, mix, arrangement. This was a legendary performance.
Damn gurl. You can feel her soul pouring into the song. Amazing.
As someone from the UK, it's lovely to see so many people from the US discovering her after this performance! Raye is fairly big in the UK and recently wiped the floor at the BRIT awards, winning 6 (or maybe 7, I don't remember) awards - the most anyone has one for years. What makes it more amazing is that she is a fully independent artist! Definitely check out her album "21st century blues" - its won't disappoint.
As a US long time fan, I love what you wrote here!.. SOOO happy that she got to SNL, even though this was not her US debut, it finally was the place which has catapulted her. I have been touting her for a long time now
Never heard of her, didn't know what to expect, but she IS AMAZING!
Listen to her album 🔥 🔥 🔥
The choir was an absolute treat🥰
You know how you watch a performance and you feel like you're watching history, something iconic that you'll never forget. I cannot remember the last time I felt like this (probably Amy maybe?) but watching Raye this weekend -- WOW, I haven't seen an artist like her, so immensely talented with such a FRESH style all her own. She combines so many things but is entirely unique. I love her voice, her whole vibe. I need to go find more.
for anyone just discovering her, i recommend watching her BRITS performance! it’s amazing!!
And Royal Albert Hall performance ❤❤❤
@@julie3895 Yep, Oscar Winning Tears was Bond-movie-worthy. 💚
Tiny desk also 👍
Will do thanks
Everyone should watch her at the Albert Hall- it’s exquisite… her Brits performance is also phenomenal… Go give her all of her flowers 💐 She deserves every single last one and many more ❤
Yes love the Albert Hall concert.
I discovered Raye about 2 months ago. I LOVE HER SOOOOO MUCH!!! She is one of the best artists to debut in the past 10 or 15 years, Simply INCREDIBLE!
This was phenomenal. So beautiful, that crescendo was so intense it made me tear up.
I am saying this since more than a year now, SHE IS THE MOMENT
generational talent; just absolutely BRILLIANT
Raye is like a breath of fresh air ❤
I love Raye. I remember finding her years ago and always being mesmerized by her lyricism. This is the best example of her artistry.
this woman just blows my fucking mind every time i listen to her lives. I am so glad we have her. Hope she revolutionizes the music scene. We need her.
this arrangement is IMMACULATE. it highlighted everyone’s talent so beautifully. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Damn that intro. I've been loving this song too had no idea she had this vocal range.
this girl can really sing, and how she got here today is an inspirational story, I am so happy for Raye.
Yeah I’m shocked. Like I’ve been listening to this song on repeat and never knew
About time this absolute QUEEN got some US prime time viewing! She’s a star and a rare talent.
We need a studio version of this like RIGHT NOW!!!
No words to describe how so so good she is.
Never hard of this song or this boo before. Shiiiiiiiit. That was a complete story she painted with this song and performance- I am thoroughly impressed
You MUSt listen to her songs, and she recreates Escapsim alone so many times
wow wow wow - never cried watching an SNL performance, the depth of her artistry is just breathtaking. She is a consummate storyteller and performer.
this is definitely one of the best renditions of this song that she’s ever done. the emotion!!! the energy!! every single note effortlessly added to effect. beautiful. love her.
Been looking forward to her performing this at SNL since they announced he as the guest!!!!!
That this was snubbed at the Grammy’s was CRIMINAL
I know it was top 40 here in the US, but hopefully this performance jumps it back onto the charts all the way into the top-20 or higher!!!
Grammy’s hardly appreciate artists who are bigger in the UK than the US.
That’s why it took 20 years for Kylie Minogue to win a second award this year (and she had gone 15 years of those without even a nomination).
That’s why Jessie Ware has never been nominated.
That’s why Ellie Goulding’s “Higher Than Heaven” album sadly stood no chances at nominations.
@@tylerkochman1007 Kylie Minogue is just nothing, deserves nothing. That she won anything is pure shite.
Last night I walked in the house the moment she started performing and I stopped, stood and watched the entire performance captivated by her voice. She definitely has a new fan in me 😅
Holy shit, I haven't loved an SNL live performance in a hot minute, but this one was FIIIIIIIIIIIIRE. Raye ate that up!!!! And that BRASS SECTION?! WHOOOOOOOO
This my first time hearing a song by her. She sounds so good live!!! The vocals are on point! The live band in the back sounds so good!!! I’m digging this song
this was crazyyyyy. between her, the background vocals and the arrangement this might be my favorite performance of this song
this girl is a STAR!!! An absolute goddess
The way she changes and arranges her songs to sound like completely new songs is just amazing! I’m obsessed with her talent and artistry! So so so good!
Literally crying ❤ she never fails to level up with every rendition of escapism . Next icon of our music industry
I feel so sad knowing that this is the first time I've heard Raye. She is AMAZING!!!! I know what's going on my playlist!!
SHES ACRUALLT AMAZING. one of my favs for a minute!! listen to my 21st century symphony on her spotify or streaming services if you wanna hear some VOCALS

Raye Raye RAYE!!!! Goosebump performance. Amazing as always. So pleased for you for your success and the recognition that you're getting. Every performance is individual and raw and beautiful. Shine darling shine!!!!❤
You gotta see her Brits performance she did recently
Please go find the chart topping version of this song.. That regular version is amazing. Better rap flows
Just listened to the official music video version. This interpretation is absolutely killer.
that was the most insane incredible performance iv seen in a long time i love her!
Yes! A musician, an artist.
WOW, SNL got some real talent this week. Never heard of her, but will remember her forever now, superfan I have become
The artistry of Raye is truly unmatched and she has such a huge hand in her production and arrangement which is why she can masterfully take the iconic record and perform it so many different ways! I’ve seen her live and it was out of this world. This album was her my top from last year and I can’t wait to hear what she serves us with her next album!
Genuinely one of the best performances I’ve seen on SNL! I also didn’t realise how much of the lyrics can’t be said on tv lol.
The emotional roller coasters that this performance takes is wild
This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on this show. This was ridiculous. 😮
I actually cried with this one, thats crazy. She is so good and so dramatic. The high bits and the choir make it heavenly i'm so sad i won't be able to see her now that she wilk come to my country. I have no money to go. I'm so sorry dear, you Will slay either way
everytime this woman gets on stage my jaw DROPS like...wow.
oh my god, this was so beautiful! with the choir, omfg perfection
Uhhh, that’s not a choir. But yes, perfect arrangement.

Wow, I'm blown away. Crazy.
Raye's performance of "Escapism" on SNL was electrifying! A true microphone drop that left me in awe. Her vocals were powerful, her stage presence was mesmerizing, and the energy she and the #BAND brought to the performance was epic. It was a musical performance to remember, showcasing her raw talent and undeniable star quality. This performance actually stole the show that night despite the presence of a strong cast /ensemble✊.
Her vocals and the horn section are pure gold. I gotta give love to the bassist!
She's finally getting the recognition she deserves. I'm so happy for her.
every time Raye does a new rendition of Escapism it legit feels like the first time listening to it for me. she is a true artist. love ya girl 🤍
Wow! She's incredible. Glad SNL had her on. Def gonna checkout her music.
I adore that she sees her live performance to be as important a factor in our experience as listeners as the material she releases; even if that means it costs a lot of the potential revenue she could be earning as an independent artist to have live instruments whenever possible. It's these sorts of touches that make all the difference to someone like me that weights live performance heavily when I'm getting into an artist's work (particularly a solo artist).
I have fallen head over heels for Raye and her music and every live performance I see/hear just further cements her as a generational talent (in my opinion of course).
Wow. This performance took an already amazing song to a whole other level. RAYE is no joke. What a talent 🔥 and this song is so underrated
This is why I’m falling in love hard on her. I love her debut but the live Royal Albert Hall version it’s a style that suits her way much better and I’m so glad she’s sticking to it.
No cause the live album has been on repeat since it was dropped
She is so phenomenal! I heard her a couple of months back and have been obsessed since!
I’ve never seen her before but this lady is incredible! The vocals are so rich! Just wow. Amazing performance. Bravo
A Star is Born
Her live voice is insanely good.
Wow. Loved this version. I’ve had this song on repeat most of 2023 and it’s like I discovered a new song!
her voice is just mesmerizing!!!!!! Glad I found her music last year..
She's always been phenomenal, and I hope her old record company realise what a mistake they made in holding her music back. She's out here performing her best work, and I love how happy she is. She deserves all of the praise and accolades ❤
Never heard of her until a few months ago on a NPR tiny concert. Good on SNL for giving this talented artist a large stage to perform. Just absolutely stunning in every which way.
I love every SINGLE arrangement of this song! The love of the work shines through every corner of that stage.
I fell in the love with RAYE after her brits performance… and the rest was history! Cannot get enough, what an incredible soul! ❤️
