He was the first person I saw in concert. I don't remember it cause I was so little but my dad told me. 2023 and listening to co7ntry still. Love the older music like phill and brooks and Dunn and George and Kenny.
dude I'm 22, live in NYC, all my friends listens to Trance, hip hop, rock, metal... I grew up the same you did. Listening to Phil Vassar, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney etc etc. I wouldn't trade it for the world!
Your just right my friends don't wanna hear country and say its boring!! I don't get it!!! Love and blessings from northern Ireland big country following here!! Look up northern Ireland country singers.x
For sure. Saw him in a small show. Was exceptional. Interacts with the audience. Extremely good piano player and singer. Enjoyable to watch. Will certainly see him again.
Good old country, can’t get this stuff anymore, this was the end of the era for great American music, there are some new artists out there carrying on the tradition, but they get no airtime, glad we got TH-cam to live the past and find the future.
I’ve seen Phil live at the 10 second saloon in Indy, a small bar with a giant line dancing floor. Paid $25 each a sat 10 feet from the stage. I’d pay ten times that to see him 10 times farther away any day! What a great concert! All his songs are incredible. Great band, great vocals, perfect sound, what else could one ask for?
My name is Karlene, I wish I looked like Christy Brinkley but I regret not going to high school reunions. Came from a graduating class of 40 something! I haven’t turned out so bad !
Phil Vassar is fabulous - if you have never attended one of his concerts where ever it may be....DO IT! Seen him 3 times & he gives it his all every single time! What A Great musician & entertainer!
This song is probably universal… we all know someone who was overlooked and went on to great things, and those who seemed to have it all and now have little. Life is (mostly) fair for most of us.
I hadn't heard this song in many years before I heard it the other day on the radio. Phil Vassar put out some good stuff. Thank you for this. God be with you out there everybody, and Merry Christmas! ✝️ :)
Love Phil's songs. Super talented. I miss this season of country music. Honestly you could put Carlene out now and we'd all love it!! We all need, just another day in paradise!! Thanks Phil❤🏝🏖
Phil Vassar has written so many country songs that have been recorded by other artists, but when I bought Phil's CD of him performing his own songs about 4 years ago, I was just completely floored. What a talent! Why is Phil Vassar not at the forefront of country music today? I'm going to go out on a limb here--Kenny Chesney's good, but Phil Vassar is great.
David Slater was male vocalist winner of 1987 Star Search with Phil Vasser as the runner up male vocalist and both of them became major country singers
Hey, I'm 14 years old and people expect me to LOVE pop music or whatever...but when I was little this is ALL I listened to, I still today. when people tell me wierd, I tell them that country is my life, it's what brought my life to happiness age to me doesn't matter to me, all that matters is that Im having a nice time and being happy :)
What a song.... It's now a part of my life. Thank you, Phil. You made my day again.... It's now, 9:45 PM. Time to shower and go to bed. Good Night, Carlene. You're the cutest.....
I love Phil Vaser! What A Great Song! Great Artist! Great Singer!!! This A Happy Song! For Some 1# who is Falling in love ! Great! Song! Phil!!!!! Thank You! Sir, Will See Ya!!
Haven't heard this song in a decade or 2, I just woke up and it randomly popped in my head. So happy I found it. Loved this song when I was a little girl, I'm 28 now
Phil Vassar is a real country music star. "Carlene" is better than 98% of what they play on "country music radio." A lot of the current batch of " country music stars" cannot hang with Vassar. Not a close call. Looking forward to seeing his show in January (no snow, Dear Lord). BTW, our number one is Vince Gill. He blows away every current "country star" of today. Not even close. Vassar and Gill. Not too shabby.
I went to Einstein Bagel yesterday for the first time & ordered caramel hot coffee, the gentleman who took my order made the coffee & I looked at the receipt & he spelt my name correctly Carlene, typically people don’t get the spelling correctly. I thanked him for spelling it correctly & that’s when he told me about this song. I’m 42 & never heard of this song, so I looked it up, it’s lovely & soothing like that cup of caramel coffee 😊
This is the song that I heard on the radio when I fell in love with Phil Vassar's music. Saw him in concert a few times and he can really play that piano like no other. What a hunk of a man.
I love this song! My grandma's name is Carlene! I used to line dance in my grandma's living room as she was given a CD of this song back in 2005! It was so much fun back then!
I'm a natural redhead as well....and was valedictorian and am finishing up my phd! Haha, I always loved this song for the coincidences. Too bad I'm not a model!
Hey this girl is the bomb! tattoos zero, gimmicks zero, bra zero, natural beauty with understated makeup and clothes WOW lookin' good Carlene :) I agree with Maggie Lynn glasses are hot on her, I like the whiz kid look.
So I have a story about Mr. Phil Vasser! He graduated from Brookville High School in Lynchburg Virginia my mom and dad not only went to school with him my dad graduated the same year as him(1980)! back when I was a teenager going to Brookville High School myself, he came to town and put on a concert right there in the gym at Brookville! I got to meet him and it was an amazing experience that all these years later I still remember and always will! He's a super nice down to earth guy 😁
Oh Phil Vassar had some great hits back in the early 2000s. This was my era of country music for me - late 90s to early 2000s where country music and a slight bit of pop was all I needed in the genre. Has that wholesome sound that I dug.
Thank you for this song. I think it's helped keep my mom young at heart. It was my dad who had the horn-rimmed glasses. He's passed away a few years now. Her old stomping grounds was downtown Vancouver, before it got built over with new skyscrapers. She was the valedictorian at caring for a lot of children, if you know what I mean.
Supposedly the inspiration for they song was model Cindy Crawford who was in fact the valedictorian of her high school class and had an academic scholarship to college before dropping out to pursue her modeling ambitions
Fun song...I was asked at church today if I'd heard it!! My name is Carlene also, and it's been rare to meet other ones with this name! Thanks for such an up beat, happy song!!:)
I saw Phil in Concert EXCELLENT!!! & I am not really a Country fan. Who is that stunner in the Carlene video? I was married to her in a previous lifetime, I've been looking for a face to match to the memory forever. It's been a long time since 1789 forget graduation. Thanks for the Video Phil and please give that Model a credit......
On October 25, 1999, Phil Vassar released his debut single "Carlene" on Arista Nashville. It was Vassar's debut single, and the lead-off single from his self-titled 2000 debut album. Vassar wrote the song with Charlie Black and Rory Bourke, and featuring background vocals by Collin Raye. The song is about a girl named Carlene who went to high school. He recalls being an athlete who struggled with academics when she was a valedictorian. Now Carlene is an adult, he visits the school yard, where he meets Carlene by telling him that she looks good. In the second verse, the two go for a ride together as they begin conversing. Now that Carlene has PhD, and she's modeling for Vogue. He was a songwriter, who gets a couple songs on the radio. The single edit eliminates one repetition of the chorus at the end. This was Vassar's first music video, and it was directed by Gerry Wenner. The video debuted on CMT as a "Hot Shot" on October 29, 1999. The video features Vassar singing and playing piano on a rooftop.👍
So awesome to see you on you tube Phil..best investment of those who believe d. And still do from movie gallery employee fan club press...knew it when I first heard your voice. Mary B
Don't stop plesse. Dining touching so manyifes with your music...ypu helped over the years battle cancer....and always end my days with your music...losts of days start it that way...Ted was right about you going straight to the top of charts for a long time sir. .may life always treat you kind...as well as your family....Happy Holidays...2 more Good times in everyone's life's...
Phil Vasser is one of the most underrated country singers. Everyone of his songs are good.
Yup they are
True
That's because he wrote them and many of our favorite songs sang by other artists. He made far more cash writing their songs.
Love Phil! 100% under rated! So true!
He was the first person I saw in concert. I don't remember it cause I was so little but my dad told me. 2023 and listening to co7ntry still. Love the older music like phill and brooks and Dunn and George and Kenny.
Wish we could still get country music and videos like this. 1980-2010 was the best in my opinion
OMG you couldn't have said it better!
Agreed. Anything past 2010 is just mimicry of the past done up like a big turd.
This song is really my actual name
agree, this new country is just boring to me, the childers and bryants are just lame imo
dude I'm 22, live in NYC, all my friends listens to Trance, hip hop, rock, metal... I grew up the same you did. Listening to Phil Vassar, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney etc etc. I wouldn't trade it for the world!

It's just another day in paradise! Rounding these fields in the hot summer sun. And make up for lost time here in my next 30 years.

My name is Carlene and I am that Carlene--added this song to my happy playlist-WTG Phil
As a Carlene, I approve of this song
Phil Vassar, in my mind, is an under-rated country artist.
Agreeeee
Steve I agree too.......
He damn sure is! Saw him in concert years ago and would love to see him again!
Absolutely
For sure. Saw him in a small show. Was exceptional. Interacts with the audience. Extremely good piano player and singer. Enjoyable to watch. Will certainly see him again.
Phil's so much more than what he gets credit for. He sings from his heart with everything he has.
Saw him at Turning Stone a few years ago. Amazing show!
He sure is tall bro ish guy 3:22 good job!! Sylvia stallion
I want to know who this beautiful girl is. WOW!!!
Phil is a master songwriter/piano player/storyteller….
Good old country, can’t get this stuff anymore, this was the end of the era for great American music, there are some new artists out there carrying on the tradition, but they get no airtime, glad we got TH-cam to live the past and find the future.

She was just as gorgeous in her glsses and braids.
Timeless master piece. But his song didn't get the credit they deserve. I love his song
None of the good ones do but of course on the flipside, they are all tally ho to honor, respect, and love garbage, crap, and garbage.
Didn't get credit? Lmao..WTF..It was a HUGE hit!
Was 15 when this magic piece came out. Forever a place in my history. So gled i lived when music made sense.
Phil Vassar is fabulous - if you have never attended one of his concerts where ever it may be....DO IT! Seen him 3 times & he gives it his all every single time! What A Great musician & entertainer!
This song has some the best rhyme scheme i've ever heard.
Such a great time in Country Music! What a wonderful Bruce Hornsby parallel!
When I lived in Nashville, I saw Phil often working out at the Green Hills YMCA. I had the biggest crush on him! So hot and so talented!
childhood memories. still one of my favourite country songs to this day
Same
This song is probably universal… we all know someone who was overlooked and went on to great things, and those who seemed to have it all and now have little. Life is (mostly) fair for most of us.
I hadn't heard this song in many years before I heard it the other day on the radio. Phil Vassar put out some good stuff. Thank you for this.

Good ole Country music. Now all pop. So sad!
Love Phil's songs. Super talented. I miss this season of country music. Honestly you could put Carlene out now and we'd all love it!! We all need, just another day in paradise!! Thanks Phil❤🏝🏖
Saw Phil a few years ago, WHAT ENERGY! WHAT TALENT! He’s absolutely amazing and I so appreciate his clean beautiful songs and music he’s written!

This isn’t pop country. At all. This is pure country and we like it that way.
Oh Phil Vassar had some great hits back in the early 2000s. This was my era of country music for me - late 90s to early 2000s where country music and a slight bit of pop was all I needed in the genre. Has that wholesome sound that I dug.

i love this song
My friends and I listened to Phil at The Courtyard Cafe in Antioch TN before he ever had a record deal. He used to perform a lot of Elton John songs.
Just an awesome tune! If it wasn't #1 in the country, it certainly should have been. One of the best country songs of all time!
This one my all time favorites songs
