    I really REALLY love your stylist. There are so many qualities about her that are missing from the industry today. The first thing that really hit home was her understanding that her service and your experience is a team effort and is built off of mutual understanding and respect for each other. She listens to all of your thoughts and concerns and directly addresses and acknowledges them. She understands when to pull back to give you the reins yet also knowing when to step in and use her authority as an expert to help your reach your goals. On top of that she is professional, has wonderful energy, and takes time and care with her work. Cherish her, you won't find many stylists like her 👏

      You’re so right and she’s amazing! 😍I wish I had never left her chair in the first place but I just had to be grown and go try something else! 😅I’m just super thankful that she allowed me to come back and now she’s partnering up with me to fix everything! 🙌🏽 She reminds me a lot of how I see you treating your clients in your videos. ♥️💯

      @@shelly.v.247 it's okay. I'm sure it was new territory for both of you and from the sounds of your convo it seems like she wasn't as comfortable with walking you in that direction. We all have our specialties and comfort levels as hair professionals. And it's okay to have multiple stylists so long as they both work together to get you where you want your hair to go.
      You don't go to one doctor for every single thing, you have different specialists for different aspects of health and wellness. Your hair is the same way. Synergy between multiple stylists and different perspectives can give you the best experience with your hair journey.

    Watching you go through this is like deja vu. This has been my experience with BGC to the tee. Prior to this method, I was a natural that mostly did protective styles and got my hair straightened once every quarter for a thorough trim. That method worked great for me- my hair was healthy, it felt soft, I was able to retain length, and I never had any issues with shape going from straight to curly with that approach.
    What made me try BGC was I experienced severe heat damage (and I mean some of it was to my root) the last time I got my hair straightened, so I vowed to NEVER get my hair straightened again. Then here comes BGC and it made sense to me, I got super invested, and started going to a stylist certified through them. My mistake was doing a BIG big chop to get rid of my heat damage. That combined with their method has left me with very little length retention. As you know from my comment under another video of yours, I experience the same as you with your ends. I was concerned about the splits that I observed up the shaft of my hair, so now I have started seeing an “old school” natural hairstylist. She couldn’t believe the condition of my hair, but we are slowly correcting it.
    Anyway, I say all this to say, girl, don’t chop all your hair off! We will get through this. We just have to go back to what we know works for us. As for me, I just needed to find a stylist who was more responsible with heat.

    Please don't do a big big chop! Your stylist has super powers and is getting your hair slowly back with your new routine. I love how she says that she's cutting around someone's hair cut and it needs time to correct it to make it her own. Super important to realise this. ❤❤

    As a stylist who use to do curly cut for a yr in my first salon, YES, it is cut for shape...healthy and split ends are cut but you can't guarantee all split ends unless you big chop. I no longer offer those cuts and I've had people ask....I got more personal opinion about that but I won't leave them here. lol Like I JUST had client come in, washed her hair 3 days before and her hair felt SO ROUGH, I was shocked...She's been following the no Deep conditioning rule..I told her to start introducing that. lol

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah those cuts just didn’t seem to address all my split ends. Plus they left my ends so thin too. I’d rather have thick full ends but I guess it’s a preference. 😅
      Yeah. I can’t believe I ever stopped using deep conditioner! 🤦🏽‍♀️ Neither stylist I partnered with ever suggested or recommended I reimplement one. So I’m glad my current stylist immediately did! 🙌🏽 Leave-in has been a game changer too for that rough, hard and dry hair feeling.
      This whole situation has just been really frustrating and challenging to go through. 😝
      I love hearing from the stylist and their perspective on all of this. So thank you! 🥰

December January February is wig season for me. that's enough wash and goes and dry summer ends for me. Lol! i enjoyed every minute. Now to get my hair health back. I put my own protective styles in because people be messing with my scalp and hair too much.

    Shelly, like your Stylist indicated, rarely does she see women in our age group (50s) have hair of your thickness. That means you're doing something right! Please don't shave your hair 😢. Yes, Shelly….Please refrain from chopping your hair off. Having as much hair as you do at your fabulous age is rare. I am nearing 70 years old and my hair is thick, long and growing (big chop was 14 months ago). Having thick natural hair (I wear wash-n-go’s) gets me a lot of attention and loads of compliments, because it’s not the norm. You don’t have any gray….I DO!! Keep your length….stay consistent with your routine….and “Do You”. It’s working for you!!!! 🥰 Your hair is fabulous!!!!!

    She's so sweet on her opinion of another stylist. The Curly folks literally is about style which really doesn't help if a person has damage.
    She's doing a fab job..and it happens we stray to check out a style.
    Mine was using a demi brush in the shower I was literally pulling my hair out then it was covid.then I decided to get it relaxer cause I workout.I'm growing my relaxer out yet again. I've learned so much about my hair as to why it would stop a little pass my shoulder. I would get tired then cut it off...well learning I was high porosity I needed pills on the end nightly. I use the Phyto line and deep condition weekly I use a leave in and roller set. My cousin who is a hairdresser said she can tell a big difference now that I am following a process...and she is glad I'm growing my relaxer out because my hair grade really didn't need it. BTW I'm 56...
    This was very enjoyable... New subbie

    i have those tree splits up my hair shaft too for over 10 YEARS & I've never had a curly cut😡
    i've done 4-5 big chops but they come back....i'm experimenting with a process where detangling, hydrating AND moisturizing EVERY SINGLE DAY (in addition to 7-10day deep conditioning) so I hope to see improvements

    Now this! Love to see these transformations and transparency. Finding a professional stylist who is knowledgeable and knows their craft is like GOLD. Unfortunately, the state of affairs regarding hair care is SAD. It makes me have hope that there is still some out there who have integrity regarding their craft. Your hair looks beautiful and you're doing a great job making a comeback. Personally, I never believed in the curly cuts, no oil and whatever else is in TH-cam land. Fortunately, I have been blessed to have old school stylist/beauticians in my life who respect my hair and the art.

    When you dropped the hair strands with the split broken, almost completely up the hair shaft, my mouth dropped open wide. I am so upset for you. There would be certain pieces of information that I would receive that I felt that just did not work for my hair and one of those was not deep conditioning my hair, and no longer using leave in. I stop using a leave in, but I did not stop deep conditioning my hair with every wash day. Especially because I was not using a leave it my hair in particular dries out so easily and I have a hard time retaining moisture so I have to do what’s best for my hair. I appreciate you because I’m still rocking my wash and goes because of you ❤

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sis, my heart hit the pit of my stomach when I found those strands. 💔😭
      I wish I could go back in time and continue using my DC and leave-ins but I truly believed in the method I was following. Now hindsight, I’d love to see the long term receipts from following said method???🧐 I’d love to see the proof of what it does or doesn’t do to the hair!
      Either way, what’s done is done. All I can do is either shave it or work to fix it. Right now I’m committed to fully understanding the do’s and don’ts so no one else has to experience this.
      Lastly, I’m thrilled to hear I’ve been of help in your curl journey. That truly warms my heart fren! 💖🤗

      I’m happy to see that some are starting to while others post content showing botched cuts on straight hair. I think they do that to try and scare people away from getting anything other than a cut done on the hair while it’s curly.
      I think we all need to remember that there can be both good and bad results in anything we do. 💖

    I have been getting curly cuts for more than 2 years and my hair is very lifted. I've had extreme breakage the past 6 months I'm sure is due to the high lifting and lack of moisture. My stylist stopped using gels of my hair a year ago but it still lacks moisture. I'm currently growing the bleach out and I'll figure things out from there.
    I also never wear my hair straight.

    Only a year, year + 1/2 max!? Wow your hair must grow fast indeed! I'm recovering from (self-inflicted) damage myself and I'm thinking it'll take me about a year to reach my goal (of a similar length to yours) and I have much less distance to go. 😅
    Your stylist seems like such a fun and positive person! She expertly cut on blown-out hair and the shape is SHAPING!!
    Also, don't give up, even on the pieces that may seem unsalvageable! I recently ran across this lady called Heidi talking about how a bad (professional at the salon!) bleach job burned a good chunk of her hair off and she was told by the stylist that she'd go bald and, on the verge of a mental breakdown over possibly losing all her hair, she managed to save it and bring it back to life with coconut oil, olaplex, and k18. Looking at her now vs the footage on the day of the mishap you'd never know it was the same head of hair!
    (Why is it always curlyheaded folks who feel like they have to big chop to get rid of damage🤔)
    For the science aspect, I think you might benefit from getting in touch with Cheryl Morrow (who is co-hosting an afro hair science summit in toledo next month I believe. Your stylist might be interested too.) She's the daughter of the famous Dr. Willie Morrow, a pioneer in modern afro haircare.

      I’m excited that you’ll be to your head goal soon! Finding out the severity of the damage I have has probably kicked me out of the 1-1.5 year goal. Lol. However, with the story about the blonde girl gone wrong who knows! Maybe I can hold on!!! 🤷🏽‍♀️😅

      Several stylists are starting to admit that they cannot fully assess the hair when it’s curly. Therefore, they are suggesting that the hair be blown out periodically to assess for any issues that may be present. With all the information circulating, I personally would want to have my hair fully assessed. However, we are all entitled to do what we think it’s best for our own head of hair. Also, what if you get your hair blown out and assessed and it’s not as healthy as you think? I don’t think most stylists want to have to deal with that so naturally, they are going to tell you that your hair is healthy and you don’t have any issues. I would think a responsible stylist would proactively offer to blow your hair out and assess it especially with everything going on. However, I could be completely wrong.
      I’m getting my haircut every three months. I was going to get it cut monthly but I do not want to get it blown out that often. I’m not sure my heir can handle that right now.

Are you a candidate for or has she been doing any treatments like K18? I am happy your hair is on the mend, seriously. You are case in point as to why we always have to be observant, and trust our instincts. Your set is looking beautiful. Have you shown those strands to your stylist so she can make an assessment of them? As you know splits can't be mended and do have to be cut off eventually. However, they can be strengthened to help prevent further splitting as you grow them out. Strengthening/protein conditioners can help greatly as she said during your appointment. If you're not against using one that isn't 100% natural, I'd suggest checking out Aquage SeaExtend Strengthening Conditioner from the original/classic line. A stylist suggested it to me years ago, and it has never failed me when I needed something as a repair-type conditioner without using a hard protein like Aphrogee. I know with my patience and skills and hair type I need a straight cut at least twice a year. My hair tangles really badly when the ends are uneven and more tangles means more breakage for me..unfortunately and my hair is ultra fine 4c. Burst out laughing at the bear edit. This mid shaft splits I have in my hair. What stops them for me: 1. wearing a protective style 5 days out of 7. Most effective, easy and gentle: twists and flat twists. 2. deep condition every week and apply leave in daily 3. I only use styling products 1 day out of 7. 4. Utilising protein and olaplex. Last year I had damaged ends from heat......Olaplex made those strands stay in my hair for over a year whereas before they would have broke off. Note do not over use olaplex no 3 or protein. start small and then gradually increase. once you no longer have damaged hair stop using Olaplex and strong keratin protein. If you are unsure...ask your stylist to apply the protein or olaplex. I've seen people damage their hair from over using protein and olaplex. be careful with them. I get away with a lot because my ultra-fine hair is bleached!! still I do not use olaplex every day just once a week. good luck lady!!!

    I really think you should trust your stylist. There's nothing like having somebody looking at your hair from the outside in with your best interests at heart that's going to help you get back to the kind of hair that you want.
    With that said, have you had a conversation with your stylist about using Bond correcting treatments? Things like olaplex can do a lot to fix the Integrity of your hair while you're growing out so you don't have to split running up the hair strands. I know olaplex is not a big deal in the natural hair community, but it really does do a good job of correcting damaged hair.
    I also had some thoughts on the changing texture. Now you may not be going through the same thing I am, are you graying and do you color your hair? I have increasingly gray hair and the texture of my gray hair is different because the structure of gray hair is different. I don't know if you're already researching it but hair grays because there's less melanin and not only does the loss of melanin change the physical Integrity of your hair but it also allows your hair to be less protected and therefore experience more sun damage. Which contributes to the drying of your hair. While color may make the hair look darker I don't think it changes the structure and integrity of your hair. Which is honestly another reason why you got to be focusing on keeping your hair hydrated. Didn't know if you were one of those ladies that is free of gray hair but that can have an effect.
    Otherwise your hair is gorgeous, blown out and Curley! Can't wait to see more videos of your journey.

    When you showed those split hairs after your appointment, I got a little teary-eyed. I am so sorry this has happened to your hair. Your hair is so beautiful, and it is on the mend. I pray that God continues to guide you and give you peace every step of the way during this process. He knows (and cares about) EVERY hair on your head (Luke 12:7), and He will perfect what concerns you (Psalm 138:8). You have helped a lot of people, including myself to recognize and alleviate further issues with our hair, and for that I'm grateful. Peace and blessings to you. ❤

    Given the extent of the dehydration/distressed strands...do you think that climate is a factor. I know that you have mentioned you live in Arizona

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I’m sure it has played a role but I also travel a lot to places that have a lot of humidity in the air. So I’ve had a mix of both. 🤷🏽‍♀️
      Interestingly enough, I asked that question a few times when I was a member inside a certain platform and was told a dry climate didn’t matter. I no longer believe that to be true though. I think we have to take into account all the different variables. No one size fits all when it comes to our hair. 💯

    • @sart1348
      @sart1348 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shelly.v.247 that's crazy to hear because I've heard them talk about climate as a factor. If you are living in either extreme and depending on your unique head of hair it will be a moderate to severe impact to your hair.
      I remembered how different my hair behaved on work trips and trips to the beach, out on the water vs in my city. I think that is a big reason why humectant heavy routine has to be coupled with polymers heavier stylers, barrier sprays in drier climates.
      I hope your hair recovers soon!

      @shelly.v.247  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sart1348 Yes, you’re correct about what you stated. They have always talked about climates but to my knowledge it was more so about humid climates. So I apologize that I wasn’t clear on that. However, as far as the dyer climates they said we just wouldn’t have the need for the anti humectant gels/products etc.
      I even remember asking about a heat protectant for the sun since it can be very intense in AZ and they said there was no need. So who really knows 🤷🏽‍♀️
      Anyway, thank you for your well wishes. I really appreciate it! 💖🙏🏽

      Arizona also has very hard water, which is damaging to the hair and skin. Alot of places in the Western part of the US have harder water. Water softeners systems and chleating shampoo helps with hard water.

      I commented in a previous thread that humectants don't work well in dry climates on their own (i.e. w/out something to lock that moisture in). Humectants pull moisture from the air into the hair, but if there is little to no moisture in the air, they will pull moisture out of the hair leaving it dry. I wondered if that was contributing to the dryness in Shelly's hair in combination with everything else.

    I found tree branch split ends on a few of my single hair stand. I take good care of my hair. I love washing my hair. I go to a natural hair salon to get my regular trims. She never noticed it. She told me my hair is flourishing. Please advise how can I fix this without cutting my hair? I'm trying to let my hair grow out. I'm scared. I thought I was doing all the right things to my hair until I saw your video. So I decided to look at my hair strands and I saw the same exact thing ,my hair strand had tree branch split ends on 1strand, I couldn't believe it. Please advise what can I do to reverse this madness? Thank you for this information, because I don't think I would have looked for it, if I had not watched your video. I need help..Please advise.

    Have you considered using aphogee? Honestly not been convinced by the effectiveness of bond builders, couldn’t really find any scientific studies on these bond building chemicals whilst there are studies of protein at different weights penetrating the hair shaft. It might help mitigate the weakness. I also feel some of this damage is heat damage from the dryer, people keep saying diffused heat doesn’t cause damage but I don’t see why it couldn’t. Ahg says he got damage from a hair steamer, so the high temperature with no heat protectant or leave in could be the reason for the curl pattern changing. I think if you want to grow it out you can, unless you begin to see excessive hair thinning, your split hairs will get cut off over time.

    • @TWS1977

      I’ve also said the exact same things about the hooded dyers and lack of leave-in and heat protectant.

    Hmmm.....those splits all the way up the hair shaft is an interesting development. How could that still be happening after all this time without getting a curly cut? Is it your technique? Or maybe some other health challenge that is impacting your hair? I thought the blown-out cuts and deep conditioners were the trick.

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree it’s extremely interesting and even more so concerning!
      I didn’t fully realize the extent of the damage when this first all began. However, watching the Afrikan Hair Gods coverage of this topic made me inspect my hair further. Especially since he’s had numerous clients with the same issues. He confirmed my suspicions and concerns which warranted a deeper look.
      So I’ve come to believe that it’s a culmination of not only the curly cuts but also the no oils and butters method I was following.
      As mentioned in my video I don’t believe curly cuts are bad at all but I just don’t feel they address all the split ends. In my hair I believe those split ends snowballed throughout the year I was getting them. I also believe the lack of using certain products not containing oils and butters high on the ingredients list plus the omission of DC & leave-ins has played a huge role too.
      My hair has drastically improved since reimplementing them but as you know you can’t mend a split in the hair. It must be cut. So there is only so much any given product can do for me right now.
      I understand your point about any health issues or concerns but I get routine and extensive bloodwork every 3-4 months. I’m also well versed in reading labs and everything is in the standard range.
      Lastly, as with anything in life things will always continue to develop and evolve. My hair is no different. So I reserve the right to continue to share my experiences as I uncover them. I also reserve the right to look for solutions with or without others who care to help and/or address the concerns raised.
      Hope that addresses and answers all of your question. 💖

      I heard detangling with a brush can cause split ends as well. I never detangle with a brush because those small bristles rips my hair. If my hair is already detangle then I will use a brush. Any other time I’m using a wide tooth comb to detangle. But it’s probably because she wasn’t moisturizing her hair properly

    If the splits you are finding are near the end of your hair, then I don't think you should shave your hair. I definitely wouldn't suggest cutting it, if your next cut, as your stylist says could resolve all that's wrong.
    I'm curious what you have to say about texture changes. I have four different textures in my hair. I've been a straight natural the majority of my adult life. Up until the past two years. I don't think I ever really knew what my natural texture was. And even now, I'm not so sure I will ever know. My hair is color treated for gray coverage. Whenever I decide to stop covering the gray, the gray will be a different experience. I'm on thyroid medication and have androgenic alopecia. The front of my hair seems completely disconnected from the rest of my hair. This is primarily why I wear twist outs to get some level of uniformity.
    I know you aren't dealing with all the things I'm dealing with but I'm just curious because I'm pretty sure that my hair isn't what it was originally genetically hard-coded to be.

      The splits at at different points through the hair strands. At the bottom, middle and top. They are literally everywhere except the new growth so far.
      I love my stylist because she’s so positive and supportive but I know what I’m seeing and another big cut in November won’t even remotely touch the damage that lives within the interior.
      In a strange way I’m thankful God picked me to go through this because he knew I’d use my voice to speak up about it. He knows I won’t stop asking questions and researching until we know the “why” behind all of this!
      The texture change is very interesting too. I think I know why it happened but I want to be certain before speaking about it first.
      What I do know is this is the perfect storm within my head of hair! Lol 😅
