    As someone who has learned to watch football in the post Guardiola era, it felt alien watch this match. Sometimes, I would find myself in disbelief how there was almost no tactical variation and how the play was done directly from defenders to forwards. Venturin and Jugovic would rarely come to link up with the defense to help in the buildup. Almost no triangles. Lots of long balls and iso plays.
    Not even the most defensive of the teams in today's world plays like that. It made me realize how the Guardiola revolution was good for football.

    • @Gatti1990
      @Gatti1990 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Guardiola didn't revolutionized game, he extendet Cruyff idea of game from 90' (Dream Team Barcelona with Romário, Stoichkov, Koeman... Guardiola :)).
      This was You watching here is hard defending style known as Catenaccio,(over 40 fauls committed in game) just come from.. Italy

      Take this match with a grain of salt. The 90s were the lowest point in terms of quality of football being played. If you go back to the 80s and before, you'll see much better football in display...

    • @jonpirovsky
      @jonpirovsky 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, as someone already pointed out here, Guardiola's system is entirely based on Cruyff's system - which itself is based on Rinus Michels's system from the 70's (Total Football), which, in turn, draws major influence from the Hungarian team of the 50s and so forth...
      Guardiola didn't really create something revolutionary, he merely redeployed old forgotten tactics back into modern times and proved that these old tactics could still work. He took football out of the dark ages of the 90s and early 2000s, when counterattacking and reactive, long ball football dominated and midfield build up was not encouraged.

      Lol back then there were different styles of football being played. Some played very defensive, others had more of aerial threats, counter attacking and others played more possession style. But there was a constant, that being that teams played "vertical football". Meaning they were always playing forward. Football took a completely wrong turn because for some time now, there is basically one style that is being taught and displayed. In football, like in all sports, there should never be only one way of playing/competing. That alone does major harm to how competitive and challenging a sport can be as it becomes a bit predictable. Just apply this to boxing, for example. There are different styles in boxing. This alone makes for interesting fights and also becomes difficult because now the two fighters with different styles have to figure each other out, and also see how they can impose their style on one another. In football, when you basically have one style, surely the team that best plays this style and has the better players surely will win. Thats a huge part of why competition has gone to shit since 2010 and its the same handful of teams dominating. Apart from the fact that there are few players that can change a game, unlike before when there was an abundance of them. No, dont think Im saying football was "perfect" back then. It never has been, and never will be. Football will always be in a constant change. But it was without a doubt much more competitive and the quality of teams and players was also way better than these recent times, club and national team level.

      @@jonpirovsky You've given your insight on the quality of football, but what do you think of the 90s in terms of generational talent? Not only about R9 and Zidane, but overall?
