HOW MUCH SALT Should be in My WATER SOFTENER?

  • Does it matter how much salt you put into your water softener? It sure does! How much SALT should be in My WATER SOFTENER? The salt level needs to be higher that the water level in your brine tank otherwise the water will not absorb enough salt to regenerate your water softener! So too little salt and the water won’t absorb enough salt, and your water softener won’t work! Too much and you risk compacting the salt and getting a salt clog.
    Best rule of thumb? Fill it ½ full and when you see water above the salt, add more salt!
    Never see any water in your water softener because it’s a pre fill softener? Then just keep it about ½ full of salt!

    Gary, I just want to tell you how much I’ve learned from all your videos as I work on my water softner with no prior knowledge on it.
    I have a Pentair pro Elite and was able to use your videos to learn more about it and how much salt I should be putting in it. I’ve seen videos saying to fill it all the way to the top because either way the salt is going to be used. but then again, it makes sense that it would clog like you said if there is over 100+ lbs in the tank without the salt being used as much.
    You teach like the dad I’ve never had.
    Thanks dad! lol

    I only use 1 Bag at a time to prevent the salt from bridging. Plus my water softner is an older model which has the 12 day timer. I have it set to regenerate every 6 days. There are 3 of us in the house.

      As long as the water level isn't above the salt level that should work, but if the salt is below the top of the water your concentration of brine won't be enough to regenerate your water softener.

    Been trying to fix my softener as I was continuously getting a pink stripe. Saw this video last night at 1 AM. Run down to refill the softener which I thought had adequate salt. Turns out my salt was not touching the water or the water was not touching the salt, not sure but yeah there was a lack of intimacy between the two parties. Woke up to luxury soft water. ❤ from the UK.

    Hello. Just discovered your channel. Fantastic information! Thank you! I bought a house in Canada with a water softener much like the one you’re standing by. The control panel is identical. The way it comes apart is identical. My question is about the water level in the brine tank. It’s already so near the overflow that if I add a bag of salt, I can only get about a quarter of the bag dumped before it spills over. Will I have to clean up a mess every time I want to put salt in the brine tank?

      I disagree and stand by the info in this video.

      @@GarytheWaterGuy I’m sorry. I don’t understand what you mean. I’m not disagreeing with you on anything. I was just wondering how to add salt to the brine tank without causing it to overflow

    How would i know how much hard water comes into the water softener filtration system ?

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what you mean. Do you mean how hard the water is going into the softener or how many gallons of water flows through the softener.

    If I’m using 7 bags of salt a month should I adjust a setting? The installer wants more money to come out

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sure he does. The amount of salt you use depneds on 3 things, your settings, how much water you use and how hard your water is. Find out your waters hardness before the water softener and then set it correctly following the advice in this video th-cam.com/video/XMY69hdhX44/w-d-xo.html, set it correctly, then check to make sure you don't have water running somewhere non stop like a toilet.

    I always use iron fighter redout salt. Any man made salt I always find bricks up in the bottle when you don’t reach the gallon capacity and don’t use a lot of water. 👍🏻

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      You just need to be careful not to overfill or oversize your water softener

  • @grandam88
    @grandam88 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you performed a salinity test to prove this theory? I’m doubtful that salt level makes a difference as long as there’s salt in the tank long enough to achieve full brine saturation before regen.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the water is not touching the salt how will it absorb it?

    • @grandam88
      @grandam88 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GarytheWaterGuy Use a salometer and tell me what you find.
      I operate softener systems that hold almost 100'000 pounds of rock salt. We hold full brine saturation until no salt is left in the brine maker.
      The salt dissolves and with most residential systems, regens are not happening several times a day but several times a month. Plenty of time for brine saturation to occur.
      I'm just saying, do the test to confirm your theory.

    Hi Gary, they said our hardness is a 3gpg but I’m having a reaction to the water still so I guess it’s either the minerals in the water of prob from all the salt that’s in the brine. How many bags of salt would you say.. if the hardness is at 3gpg

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would first check to make sure that your water softener is set to 3 gpg of hardness, not to some arbitrary default setting. The amount of salt you use depends on how much water you use and your settings. The reaction may be casued by chemicals in your water like chlorine or chloramines.
