    Let me jump on this bandwagon of praise. Excellent improv of music. And thank you for showing it off on a JDXI. I bought one 4 months ago with a beginner skill level…I am currently in my 3rd month of piano lessons. But I have already laid in 4 sequences playing with it. This synth is severely underutilized at my skill level, but there is so much to this synth, that it is my inspiration to keep learning, keep practicing, and keep creating tracks. I love this synth.

    This is a very underrated groovebox/keyboard. So many great sounds on this and so many killer drum kits plus it's a analog and digital synthesizer! I got one in 2019 and I have to admit I don't use it enough but I will never get rid of it you can easily get one of these for around $500 or a little less and I do recommend it

    Dammit man, I just bought a jd-xi because of this video. Cant get enough of this “song, improvisation”. Its coming tomorrow, but will only unpack it at xmas. So excited, like being a little kid again. Thanks a ton for this upload!!!

      @@JanJabbaZamecnik Thanks, thats good to know, I'll use it on my desk at my office. I bought a MicroKorg and Monologue for myself a few weeks ago for xmas and thats packed away, but then I stumbled upon this video and thought, wow thats just too good to not get. I think the song you're playing is just absolutely fabulous and I'm really excited to try to play the same more or less. So thats 3 synths waiting to be unpacked, although the others are "yeah ok thats nice", but this is what I'm really looking forward to playing with!! Its amazing how just 1 song can have such an influence on a purchase decision. Wish you had the notes for it though.

      They're self-tought btw. 25 years ago I put a keyboard on stand (some silly old casio with lights and such) next to me so everytime I was waiting on something to be rendered (I was 3D artist), I just turn right on the chair and "play" with it. Meanwhile I tried most of the synths because I wanted to try them all ;) With very rare and expensive exceptions), and still, JD-Xi was "most fun" because it was quick and "there" for you to doodle with it. I sell it because I thought there will be JD-Xi-2 ;) But it never came and ever since I catch myself from time to time to buy one again ;) My last "toy" is Korg Wavestate - an awesome piece of engenering and along with Minilogue XD with their awesome effects engine two synths that "are enought" ;) But still, JD-Xi was even more fun ;) I know I will get it again one day. Or JD-Xi-2 if it ever be released ;)

    • @Spludgeroo
      @Spludgeroo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JanJabbaZamecnik Waiting for stuff to render. I know about that. I used to be a 3D artist too but still do it for fun. I've just finished a render of the Vacuum Pro software synth made to look as if it were a physical one using in Blender 3D. I've got a JD to one side.
      Making music videos with 3D animation is where this is heading.

    you just sold this synth for me at: 3:25. I'm sorry but I don't think you can get such an amazing and alive, warm sound from VST synths. I have used countless vst and my ears and my heart tell me this is just far superior to vst. maybe I'm wrong, but my intuition says not! maybe the MS delay is a part of it, these hardware synths have much better input than vst. but it just sounds more like an 'instrument' than vst. I guess is the best way I can perceive it. Been looking to buy my first synth. I went into a music store and tried this one. I was so blown away I didn't even bother trying any others and I found myself wizarding away on this keyboard for 1 hr. It has opened a whole new world of possibilities for my music production I feel. thanks for the great video!

      Thanks. The Chord feature is really fun. I must say I do not understand why Roland is to shuttered. System8 has different sequencer than JD-Xa and it all differ than JD-Xi ;) I bought it just to test how the controls are made and I will most likely keep it as a fun toy (and more). If JD-Xa has sequencer like this, I will most likely buy it even that I do not like the synth ;) Lol

      Really? I'm just enjoying Jupiter80 and it has drums but there's no way how to program the arp and even if there was, it can't be run on drum part ;( Sonically it's masterpiece, but I have to admit JD-Xi is much more fun for me ;) ;)

    • @theshepard22
      @theshepard22 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What does the chord feature really allow you to do? I couldn't tell. I can see how you accessed it, but those awesome sounds.. did you program that sound ahead of time or something? Could you explain? Thank u! Sounds lovely!

    • @JanJabbaZamecnik
      @JanJabbaZamecnik  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you turn it on, it behaves sort-of like a arranger. It tries to guess the chord you're playing and then transpose all note tracks (not the drum track - obviously) according to that chord you're in. It sort of overcome the 4 bar limit that sequencer - unfortunately - has. Also it makes it really usefull if you use another instrument as a lead and JDXi just as a "backing tracks".

      It's actually very friendly and easy to use. I bought it, because I have had System8 and JD-Xa (both Roland latest) and they as same as they are seems to be done by different departments, because the UX is horrible. I bought JDXi to check how the sequencer is done and how the overall user interface feels. And I had a lot of fun. I really recommend it ;)

      I have to say that even that I have stands of other synths next to it, just because of its sequencer JD-Xi is still a lot of fun. I WISH Roland do something like that but with 8 tracks (at least) , unlimited patterns and decent audio engine (I mean no disrespect but JD-Xi is really saved by its effects). That will be awesome ;) I almost re-evaluate getting JD-Xa but the sequencer is same boring thing like on System8 ;( It's hard to cope how Roland could do so many so different instruments. Those groups of engineers really should talk to each other ;)

    i wrote Roland Support about this 2 JDXI units i purchased from Roland, both with same defects. the 1st unit was purchased in 2016 and it became defective within 1 year. i drove it to Roland/Boss repair ctr 50 miles paid $100 for repairs each time, never fixed. the unit's circuitry is defective for both Tempo & Master Volume knobs, causing the unit to slow down /speed up tempo while playing, despite the tempo settings preset in the Program parameters. Volume control slowly fades too. I bought the 2nd unit in November 2019, now it has developed the exact same problem. JDXI needs to admit its defective engineering on this device.

And it's really sad for me, now, knowing, that neither S8 nor JDXa are close to Xi "sequencer-wise". Initially I dislike Xa, but if Xa has sequencer like that, I will have one pretty quick for sure ;)
      If you're looking for astral-good sounds, check Roland XP(30-50-60-80) and the JV cards. XP80 and some cards could cost LESS than Xi and you'll have everything you need. Well, except it's not that portable like Xi ;)

    Hey Jan? I just found your video here for the first time, watched it to check out some of the sounds of this synth, AND WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE SONG YOU CREATED WITHIN MINUTES! Seriously, I really like this song and infact, put together some lead electric guitar to go with it! ( it needs guitar ) : ) I hope you saved that track? I hope you made it into a track to begin with! IT IS GREAT! ( im sure alot of people will also like to have to listen to for themselves! ) You should finish it, and let me help you to do that! : ) I have to questions now. 1- Were you able to create all those sounds on here with this synth RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX? or did you have to get some additional software or accessories first? 2- Are you in or around the east coast of America? Or weather you are or not, would you be interested in talking more with me about possibly playing synth on 3 albums of new 80s melodic/rock music that i am working on rightnow? All of the songs for the 3 albums are already complete you would just have to listen to them and learn the synth parts. No in person rehersals needed! ( although i would need you to be here in New York for the actual live recordings ) But if that just wouldnt be practical for some reason? Then we can figure out another way to record. I like your musical sense ( its similar to my own ) and i would like you to work with me. Let me know if you would like to talk more? Thank you in advance! ( and please! Save this track you just made! )

      DJ MASSAO - it's in firmware 1.5, so first you have to update your JDXi. Then, it's in menu before Pattern Length. There's 'Chord Edit' submenu. You set your Key (in my case 'D') and turn it 'ON' and that's it. Really simplem.
      To check your current firmware version just go to menu and scroll all the way to the left to 'Version'.

      @@andreaschristodoulou4274 if I'm understanding your question correctly, you want to use another keyboard to play your notes on the Roland keyboard. Which means you like the other keyboard better because it has more keys as well as regular sized keys.
      So what you need to do is have a midi chord going from the output of the keyboard you want to use into the Roland keyboard.
      Maybe you already know thus much and if so, cool. What you have to do is check your midi settings on your Roland keyboard. I don't have this keyboard so you will ha e to look at the manual or do a search on TH-cam for jd-xi midi settings. But it can be done.

      If you have 5.. 7... 10 synths on stands in the studio, this shiny plastic budget synth with small keys "looks like a toy". Many people get offended by what I wrote, but You have to see it in the context. It's bigger than Korg Volca - for sure. But on the other hand, it's smaller and look more like a toy than, for example Jupiter6. That's all I'm saying.

    • @EDcase1

      Ah, I see. Well it is in the lower price bracket true and is limited in many ways but still has amazing classic Roland sounds and drums. Its all down to the users ability to get the most out of it.

    That was fun. You seem to be a pro, you say this is a toy, okay. Please checkout my channel(very few videos) ,if you can and/or tell me if i should invest in this to produce songs. Will it sound bad or can eq and dynamics adjustment fix it, to make it fit to be on a record? Im mostly a daw guy but i need something to jam to. Thanks

    • @JanJabbaZamecnik
      @JanJabbaZamecnik  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, it's a bit of a misunderstanding. I said it's almost a toy since it's targeted to certain market by its price. It's 2 digital romplers, digital sample based drum machine, analog mono synth and vocoder. With this price, you have to expect it to be more fun and less pro-device. And yet, it's very, very good ;)
      For anything other than dance/electronic production I would say second hand Roland JunoG will do a much greater job. It will cost almost the same and you've got the full workstation with 4 audio channels.
      On the other hand for a loop-based electronic music, where (and, please, don't get it wrong) the sonical quality of the sound is usually diversified between speaker-tearing basses and 5th filtered leads (or a effected piano in a loop), this is probably more suitable, There are no distracting sounds - just the palette you need to do that type of music and zillions presets with already build sequences. It's Electribe with keys ;)
      It will be half the fun without the effect. The effects raise the sound quite a lot and sort of save it sonically.

    • @bombayblur3797
      @bombayblur3797 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jan Zamecnik frankly i dont like the sounds. it all sounds 8 bittish. i like the sound of organs. i love that texture. something like FKJ, Chelou, Tom Misch. Would a microkorg or a mininova be suitable? juno is out of the question. no one sells a used juno in my country.

    • @JanJabbaZamecnik
      @JanJabbaZamecnik  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Microkorg and Mininova are as well mostly equipped for electronic music. If you don't like JDXi sound palette (and it is really trimmed down only for few modern styles, I agree), then You could be disappointed as well. They are awesome little devices, but maybe not exactly what you're looking for.
      If you're interested in "the sound", then you should look on older synths - they cost fortune ones but many of them can be bought very cheap second hand. Roland XP60 / XP80 with cards, for example. You can find it almost half the price od JDXi and it's an awesome machine with good old Roland sounds. Combine it with the modern sound you've already got at your setup and it will spice it up.
      Or things like Korg Microstation, which is like pumped up M50 with step sequencer ;) It even has 16 layers of combi like Korg M3. Standard range but minikeys as well so it's smaller.

    • @bombayblur3797
      @bombayblur3797 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      xp60 is something i looked at, there is an indian edition and lots of secondhand here. is it a matter of switching the sample banks?

    • @JanJabbaZamecnik
      @JanJabbaZamecnik  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I have absolutely no idea that special Indian edition existed. But you can get tons of sounds online and easily rewrite the originals. Awesome is that JV cards are very cheap but the sounds are really top-class. For example, I've got NI Komplete Ultimate and yet I like the strings from Orchestral II. card much more ;)
