    I spent 7 years building, moving, tareing down, and doing every kind of bin repair possible. those 4 jacks with new cables and 1,000-1,500lb winches will lift about any size bin up to 36ft, then id put 2 more jacks on, and if you can find a big door put it in it makes life a lot easier then crawling in those little doors! good luck

      Thanks for the info. Ive heard anywhere from using a jack at every seam which seemed like a lot of overkill to me, all the way down to 3 which seemed a little sketchy. 4 seems to be the norm on bins this size.

    I got the "pleasure" of using a set of jacks like that on some 30" bins several years ago. The worst part was driving the old truck axles and hubs they used as anchors in the ground. Sketchy is a good word to describe it. Best of luck! lol

      At least with anchors like that they aint going anywhere. lol

    The bin guy working with me right now on our 19 foot west steels uses chain falls hung on the top of the A frame he said he would never use cable again (to many horror stories)... We used 6 jacks to lift them but it was more for stability then lift capacity.

  • @cesmith4566

    I want to say we used 6 or 8 jacks but most of our bins were 30 footers so may be your fine, hook one up you only have to take the weight off to get the first ring out! The new jacks are hydraulic an bolts to the inside with a central power unit. Have dad get 4 cylinders and power unit and build it

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy

      That would be handy but even with dads supplier discounts something like that would not be cheap. Ide have to start moving bins for hire just to make them worth the time and money and I aint all about that. lol

    We've done the "free to use" fixer upper jack thing before. We used Harbor Freight 1000lb. crank winches, but I don't see why the electric ones won't work. The jacks won't handle more than that, you just add more jacks. The jacks need to lean away from the wall to allow for the roof edge to pass. I can give you more pointers if you like, Good luck!

  • @echoandy51

    our rule was a jack every other sheet, you should be able to bolt those on the jacks on the third ring and git 2 rings per reset. any questions sent em my way

    One of the local guys that move bins is using chain hoists instead of wenches on his jacks1-1.5 ton

    having used those jacks to take down a bin i would def go with the power winches just to make it easier and as for weight i think you should be just fine for what your doing and cheaper than a crane too

    Great vid, but I've been meaning to ask you two questions: 1. What is the max amount of land do you think you could farm with your current setup, and 2 how much money did it take you to get into farming

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldnt have any issues doing 500 with the equipment I have now but I would have to be farming full time. I didnt take me a whole lot to get started but I was lucky enough to already have ground.

    Iv'e only moved hopper bins so can't offer any help. Have watched my neighbors install a 200,000 bushel bin, it was quite a process. Don,t see why the electric winches wouldn't work. Personally if it was my project I would'nt trust those old winches but that's just me. Can't wait to see how it comes together, I'm sure you and your dad will figure it out. Good luck, see you next post.

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old winches are out. As screwed up as that second one was im not risking it. Dad brought home on of the electric winches today to look at and we think it will work.

  • @billknoderer8202
    @billknoderer8202 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get the new winches for the money you can't go wrong. The 900-1000 lb. winches are enough to pick up a 24 footer with four jacks. 30 footer requires 5 jacks. I've moved several bins and it's more about the mechanics of the winch that gets you hurt than it is about the cable along as its not frayed. The locks and brakes on the winch should be in good shape.

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we are going to go with the electric winches since we can borrow them for free.

  • @mathman1923
    @mathman1923 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    not having to mess with cable would sure make it worthwhile to me if the price is similar. I got to think 4000 pounds would be lots. I have participated in assembly of a smaller one when I was kid. The panels were pretty light. Handled pieces of one about that same size and they didn't seem that heavy. That was when I was younger but still don't remember them being monstrous in size

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once I get the bottom ring off I know I wont have any weight issues because those are the thickest panels. As long as I can get the thing far enough off the ground to pull them out it will be all down hill from there.

    • @mathman1923
      @mathman1923 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you figure 1lb / bu you'll be close. 3000 bu bin is around 3000 lbs give or take couple hundred lbs either way depending on make of bin.

    You will find that the jacks seem unstable . Four will be enough theand be saelectric winches would be a little to fast I think . be real careful when you dont have the door to go through. It seem like there is a million bolts . If they are smaller hauling them all together is much faster. Good luck be safe.

    Do you know where to get the winch portion of it. I need about 6 rated for 4000 lbs

  • @banditfarmer1900
    @banditfarmer1900 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If any of the winches have parts that look iffy replace them. The electric ones would be nice but how are you going to power them and control all 4 at once ? Its been a long time sense I did one but there were 4 guys on the winches 2 relaying orders and one in control watching what was going on telling everyone what to do. It has to come down even and slowly and you need 3 guy wires to anchor the bin down in case of wind. Take your time and think it threw before you start taking it down, Once you start it has to go all the way down. Bandit

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are taking our Miller Welder Generator over there for power and there is going to be at least 5 of us over there working on them so running 4 winches wont be an issue. I have to have a jackhammer to get the auger out of the concrete for the 18 foot bin so we need electricity anyway.

    • @banditfarmer1900
      @banditfarmer1900 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boy I'll bet the auger tube is going to be rough after it been in concrete for that long. Just take your time figuring it out before you start, Cause once you start it has to come all the way down or the wind will take it ! Good luck getting it down and be careful ! Bandit

    How much rain did you get Sunday night? We got about 1/2 inch. Go check out 2009 corn harvest and look for 720 John Deere with a mounted corn picker and sheller.

    Are you borrowing the electric winches or buying them? I understood that you are borrowing these bin jacks so you would need to find a use for all those electric winches or sell them or w.e. As far as ease of use, the electric ones would be the cats miaow but, assuming they're 12v, you'll need a bunch of batteries or vehicles to power them. To move 1 or 2 bins, id put the cheaper manual ones, after all they aren't your jacks. But if the price is right for the electrics, and if you ever move more bins, sure why not. Easier is better.

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are getting use of the winches for free to. But we are planning on building a good set of bin jacks for putting these things back up so we are probably going to end up buying a set anyway.

      +Oliver66FarmBoy Cool deal, we build our own tilting bin mover and so far have been fine with heights. Mind you they were only 1600 and 2000 bushel tin cans lol

    Rings get thinner as you go up so the bottom ring is the heaviest 1000 lb winches should be enough..The jacks we had were made out of heavier tubing, but the jacks you have look like they are built pretty good 4 jacks should do the job...I once used MSC for hardware but now I use a company ----Mcmaster-Carr..Got a location close to you......Might benefit you to check them out....

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We decided to go with the electric winches. They are Warn PowerTuggers so they should be good shit. Dad brought one home today to look at and for a 1000 pound winch its a heavy little sum bitch. I think they were probably intentionally conservative with their 1000 pound rating.

      Its a 24 foot, 219 inches to the eve. Im comming up with about 4200 pounds for a shipping weight but I dont know if that included the floor or not.

    • @Derek_00Mustang83
      @Derek_00Mustang83 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Oliver66FarmBoy all of our shipping weights include the floor but that might just be us. Pound wise you should be good but if it was me "which it's not and just my opinion" I would use the smaller jack also just for the stability factor.
