the level 1 has focus sash, meaning if something potentially one hits it, it lives with 1hp. then that pokemon uses endeavor, thus making one of the opponents pokemon have 1hp left also. then the lv1 pokemon uses a priority move, so it goes first and does that one damage needed to KO the other pokemon.
if the lvl 1 smear was a dark voider, which most are, a protect on 1st turn could have one that 1st game if he go t both pokes to sleep and no berries were present, but i'm just saying
