More like a full time scammer. She said she is an evil wich and she only cares about information. We'll see but I already placed my bets on screwing Subaru up next time. Just like in the trailer. (She is best girl tho)
this one of THE most realistic reactions in anime history. I have seen people irl who are talking about severer traumatic events for the first time. break down and act just like this. those whole scene just gives the viewers a very good idea of just how much hell this man has been through.
I've been lauding Eren Yeager as the man for the last few months, but binging this series gives me another aspect of respect for such a realistic human character
Idk what can be more "severer" than dying over and over and losing your loved ones over and over. Those people you're referring to must have been quadruple toured special ops veterans to achieve such a feat.
@@coreyflynn8445 Honestly, yeah, RE:Zero and Attack on Titan are both probably my two favorite anime due to how well done they are, and it's partially because of how absolutely perfect both the main characters, Subaru and Eren Jaeger, are with how real they feel
To experience death by being eaten alive by a horde of killer bunnies, and be back in the loop remembering all of that, i would be insane too after that ngl.
His VA actually cried during this. He personally embodies Subaru when acting, so he felt the same pain Subaru felt almost. You can tell by the quality of his lines.
@ItsNotMe20 and to be fair im not trying to like downgrade Touma as a character but he isnt really what you'd call a very "human" character like Subaru is. So comparing the two with each other in terms of mental strength feels kinda wrong. Again no disrespect to Touma as a character
Such a powerful moment. This man is basically letting out all those emotions to say something he desperately wanted to say ever since the start of the journey.
No kidding. Honestly, I think he was saying "I can return by death" over and over again because he just couldn't initially process that he could finally talk about it after months (?) of trauma and isolation
I literally can’t imagine how relieved, sad, and broken he felt when he realised he can finally tell someone, his reaction was so realistic I could honestly say I would have probably reacted the exact same way
Exactly how I felt, I teared up knowing that he finally got to say it. He couldn't even tell Emilia that, but she supported him anyways. Such a nice thing to break the trauma he had. Then there'll be haters saying why he such a wimp, its jus a sentence.
idk, I feel like Reinhard etc. could take suffering as well. I thought the whole point of Subaru was that he was is a weak person, who progresses through successive realizations and experiences, eventually seeking his goal.
Reinhardt probably never had many chances of suffering, since he's literally the strongest individual in the world and is capable of saving anyone and anything by himself.
I wish Gigguk ever does a Re zero season 2 review and starts with that or a similar line. bonus points if it includes the rest of the cast (petra, frederica, beatrice, and even Patrasche and Otto) saying something like "I am gonna ruin this girl's whole career"
Fun fact: the voice actor of subaru really was crying when he has to cry because he felt how his character was enduring since now Those tears was real!!! This voice was really a voice of a sad man
Guamish it was in a review from this episode on Kadokawa’s youtube channel, where Subaru’s VA was giving tips on how to scream and cry while voice acting. There was also a conversation between him and Ram’s VA.
People are still saying that Subaru is a weak protagonist, but he literally just couldn't take it anymore after getting devoured by FREAKING DEMON RABBITS. Like, imagine getting eaten by hundreds of DEMON RABBITS and still being sane after that.
The scene of Subaru being devoured was very detailed in LN, do not surprise me that even after Return by Death he kept screaming in pain without stopping, even though his body was not feeling anything anymore, he had already gone crazy.
That's because they want to hold him to the typical anime hero standard. Stong, Smart, Brave in almost every situation. It fits the fantasy. But in the end. Subaru is the reality of who we all would be in a situation like this. If anyone had this ability in real life. They'd either break down, become numb, or become a psychopath. None of which are good.
Re:zero is not a story about despair. Rather, it’s a story about how a man, whose only ability is not giving up, finds hope even after having been cornered from all sides.
I have been saying this from first season for many, this story tell about someone who develop his weak character to better, developing the true human powers discipline, persistence and determination, and find solutions from deep of his desperate. *no overpowered special attacks that protagonist gained from first episodes* This is the beauty of this work. And to the all whom who attacking this anime go back to DBZ
Any% and glitchless are 2 completely opposite categories. Any% allows the use of every feature and bug of the game aside from console commands and changing game files or code. Glitchlesś is a category with strict rules that requires you to play the game without bugs, exactly the way it was intended by developer. They are polar opposites you gotta pick one
I can't even begin to imagine the mental trauma constantly killing yourself or dying would cause any human being. Even knowing that you can do that doesn't change the fact that you must undergo extreme physical and mental pain each time which is nothing to sneeze at. Add to that the fact that you will remember it all and it's little wonder that the mind would struggle or break completely trying to comprehend all of that! Not many anime like thís out there and it is very deserving of its success for not just the way it portrays this struggle with Subaru, but the added beauty of the quality voice acting and amazing soundtrack make it impossible to not empathise with the man for everything he's been through! What a series and I'm strapped in for the rest of the emotional trauma! Bring it!!
The isolation is the worst part, even the ones who suffer greatly can find respite in others. And yet, Subaru can't even say the general gist of what's going on to the ones he trusts most
@@AquaticLotus7552 very good point! I didn't even think of that and that's one of the most prvelant parts of the show, his inability to be able to tell anyone about it! Whether she was good or not, or her intentions shady, Echidna at the very least was able to hear him finally burst that dam of pent up frustration, pain and grief that was welling up within him from the literal lifetimes of suffering he endured because of RBD. He's an amazing protagonist and it's going to be amazing seeing where the story will go from here!

@@archbishopofprideNot entirely true, Tappei (the writer) said she has some feelings for Subaru which explains why she sometimes helped him without gaining anything.
@@archbishopofpride not true. She hides her feelings like everyone. She is not a goddess, she is a mortal and when she told Subaru "I know how you feel" she was being sincere. Unlike nearly every other character, she has died. She knows how it feels to die, although not as much as him. So while we are meant to question her motives we will eventually learn to relate with and understand her like every other character in the story.
Damn among all of his sufferings, the fact that he couldn't talk about his secret was clearly the most hard one. No one could understand his feeling and that make him feel more lonely everytime he died. For Subaru, the fact that Echidna see and understand his troubles, suffers and all he's been trough is just the best rewards he could ever get. I think that's why Echidna have compassion for him, even though she is a witch, because she saw him struggle just like us spectators.
As sweet as you said that Technically that does matter his drama or character... Cause he is the most disliked character in the show Next to Emilia Both are like trash to most communities I’ve been through You can fee free guess why
Memory_2022 But Echidna is cheating ! She used the power of the internet to spy Subaru and she paid to appear every time at the right moment, she is invincible!
The directors of Re:Zero truly know how to end an episode well, this and the ending of episode 15 are two of the best endings to an episode I’ve ever watched.
@@stananime1530 i feel like this episode is an updated version of episode 15. They are similar in structure even! I think my favorite episode thus far though is episode 1 of this season. The amount of information, distance, everything that happened in a single episode, the emotion roller-coaster and set-up and realization, trumps 15 and this episode. But yea, episode 15 and this one tie for #2 spot (for now)
Let it be reminded that simply being able to talk about everything can be an enormous weight off of one's shoulders. Also, I sometimes have this feeling that when I react to someone telling me something, my reactions seems fake. It's one of my fears: that the person I'm talking to deems my reaction fake and looses trust in me. One more thing comes to my mind thinking about this all. @@UshankaMaster this were exactly my thoughts, she didn't empathize with Subaru there, she just said she's been watching and that her whole driving point is information, it gives me the vibe that she just wants to know how he felt and what he thought for the whole sake of knowing about it, not that she feels any empathy for him but only her greed for information, hopefully it doesn't come to that.
@@EpicJosueJedi An essay incoming. Sorry, I might me overreacting to this whole double game thing. Weirdly enough, on a personal note, now that I'm reading about what you noticed, it makes sense, _but_ when I was watching this episode for the first time, I couldn't manage to pay proper attention to her words to make such conclusions... Subaru was so broken at that moment that I could only do so much but empathise with him and perceive Echidna's words as comfort that absolutely had to be given to Subaru due to his unprecedented suffering. Especially after the words "I know" being intentionally highlighted. It just becomes too hard to believe she's that cold-hearted to play with Subaru's feelings in such a way. So I hope it doesn't come to that, too, even though my experience with numerous characters from different works of fiction tells me not to fall for this belief and not to trust this superficiality. I'm just so conflicted with this character, this is haunting and this is why I wrote my concerns out... Even that face expression of hers in the OP and sometimes in the anime, feeling somewhat soft (probably due to her rich eyelashes), enables that eerie uncertainty aura around her.
SPOILER Not necessarily. Echidna just wants access to RETURN BY DEATH for knowledge about alternate timelines. She thus offers to become Subaru's advisor, allowing them to communicate telepathically. However, before this, Subaru met the other Witches of Sin and they subtly warned him not to trust Echidna. He thus refuses and effectively ends their partnership. Ultimately, at the arc's end, Echidna has lost interest in RETURN BY DEATH. This is kind of Echidna's tragedy; being the Witch of Greed, she is never satisfied.
Evil or not, echidna didn't have to comfort him after this.. She didn't have to help his sloth factor.. i haven't read anything or spoiled anything for myself yet and im unsure of her.. but she has helped him out in ways he though impossible. Greed is a strange thing in any anime, always seeming evil but not sure what they want in the end.. I have high hopes for echidna!
she comforts him because she is curious. She wants to observe every aspect of Subaru's identity. She comforts him in order to manipulate him in the future. Echidna seems like his saving grace, but do remember she is a witch, so every action is calculated.
ehh i read everything so far of the ln and web novel and really, she aint evil, shes very much set on the 'i do what i want want' on the moral compass, it just so happens that some things she does end up being good and some bad, but shes certainly neither evil nor good when looked at from a neutral outside perspective
Damn. Props to the auther of re:zero, the anime director and the voice of Subaru who made this moment feel so real and emotional, I can feel how Subaru just wanted to let it all out and tell someone his horrible experiences, I truly feel the sense of relief he has over just getting to finally let out the trauma of his deaths to someone else.
this is such a beatiful scene, Subaru finally being able to tell someone what he went through all the time since he got isekaid, all the things that had to be hold in him for so long, finally being able to get out of his mouth releasing him from such a big stress and feeling of being alone. 1 of my most favourite anime scenes.
what upsets me is that people thinks his lonliness and suffering just comes to a stop here/is cleared just because Echidena can understand him. I mean, sure it helps, but its never that easy.
Part from the Novel where Subaru was walking through the snowy Sanctuary this episode. I love his inner dialogues. “This sense of loss, of being deprived of the harbor of his emotions, was far too different from that heart of steel he had strived for. This, was but the result of excessive rage at the end of incomprehension, having worn everything else away, leaving only a fractured heart behind. It was not unshakable, but only drained of all its contents. ――He had already lost the will to live. Of course, it was only natural. The current Subaru wasn’t living for the sake of living. He had failed to die when he was supposed to, and so, he couldn’t die until he had found something to justify his prolonged life. In other words, it was not the will to live, but the resolve to die where all his consciousness was focused. What was there to live for in a world like this? Emilia was gone. Rem was gone. Patrasche was dead, and most likely Ram and Petra, too. And there was no question whether Otto had survived or not. There was no one. There was no one left. Because Subaru wasn’t smart enough, because Subaru wasn’t strong enough, because Subaru didn’t try hard enough, because Subaru didn’t want it enough, he failed to save everyone. He didn’t save anyone. Even though it was something only Subaru could do. [Subaru: So…… I……] Have to take it all back. See it to the end. And set everything on the correct path. It was something only Subaru could do. And it was something Subaru had to do. All the sacrifices made for its sake, Subaru must always keep in his heart. All that which was lost, Subaru must always keep in his thoughts. All the price that must be paid, Subaru must always continue to pay. To pay whatever price. Pile on the sacrifices. And take it all back in the end.”
I'm so glad i read the 4th arc before this dropped, there is so much extra amazing story in the WN that the anime will never compare with. third of the way thru arc 5, and idk if i can wait 5 years just for those first couple episodes.
@@Moneysreal It's a different medium. While there's more in the LN it's not necessarily better nor does it mean it could work in the anime. I don't really need a monologue to get what Subaru's feeling, it's being shown on his face. I feel like a monologue would have robbed the tension from the scene. That being said, if the LN did nothing but describe the look on his face, it would have been much less impactful. Each mediums have different strengths and the differences we see in the LN and Anime show their strongest sides.
Whether you favor Rem, Emilia, Otto, Echidna, or otherwise, we should all agree that Subaru is surrounded by people who care about him and make up for all the suffering he goes through.
I've heard echidna lacks empathy right? And satella lacks love. the other witches lack a certain emotion too right? I believe subaru will be able to give them the emotions they don't have to be full on human.
In my opinion, this is one of the most iconic moments of all time in anime. I have never felt emotions like this except in a few other shows. The way this was done deserves oscars. The way Subaru explained his pain and being alone broke my heart so much. I can't belive an anime can make u this emotional. Re zero will end up as one of the best animes ever.
he broke down before. It's just that whenever he tried to mention that he returns by death, he or someone else dies. He literally couldn't tell that to anyone until now.
I like these takes on personified "greed" who takes an empathetic stance for others. In truth, someone's deep, personal thoughts, those that are barely shared with only a select few, (if any at all!) could be counted as one of "rarest" things in existence. As the embodiment of Greed, I love the fact that Echidna wants to collect that information. Whether her future intentions will be malicious or not is hard to say but I'd like to think she's more of an empathetic "Greed personified."
She has no emotions towards him as witches except satella cant feel love. She wants knowledge and in order to gain knowledge she will help him because he's interesting.
She'll help him, and her intentions aren't villainous at least, but her greed is amoral, and it's not like likes Subaru or anything. But you can say she will have a conflict of interests with Subaru regarding Satella in the future.
Re:Zero just made me realize that is the best isekai, imo, of all. Emotionally, with a good plot since the episode 1 up to now, it's a masterpiece. I don't care what others think of it, Re:Zero re-defines the Isekai genre in ways that others couldn't. OST, animation, plot, character development, voice acting, direction, etc... Everything is waaaay to perfect. And now, 4 years later, after the S1, we recieve more and more of it, and this episode was rock solid the best so far that happened in this season.
Konosuba is best in comedy. Overlord is basically op MC. Re:Zero is definitely hands down more relatable because the character isn't op and he has human flaws.
@@philgamer5280 That's pretty fair, part of what I prefer about Re:zero over other isekais is that OP protagonists are a dime a dozen and all blend together. I personally just think Konosuba is fine.
It's kinda hard to find a good isekai like re:zero or youjo senki, most isekai are just overpowered plain-looking protagonist with absolutely 0 character and a big harem
This scene struck me more than any other scene in the series. I have been job searching for a few months now and watched Re:ZERO throughout this difficult process. My dreams were shattered many times over, as I was rejected and rejected, again and again, and I could not tell anyone as I would feel like a failure. So when I watched this scene, again and again, I could connect with Subaru...
Yeah, i feel like many people miss the fact that Subaru feels a very strong sense of loss whenever he dies. Because he can go back in time, and knows the future. But still fails to save his friends, resulting in them suffering and he himself suffering too. This makes Subaru feel like a failure, he starts to blame himself for being too weak, too stupid and pathetic. Ofc it's not Subaru's fault, but he still blames himself. All of season 1 and 2 have resulted in Subaru having a very low self esteem of himself.

Withoit exaggeration, one of the most realistic emotional breakdowns in all of anime. Sometimes... all you need to do is say what is bothering you to someone. Even if they know, even if they don't care, sometimes the biggest relief of pain is simply releasing that pain and becoming vulnerable. Subaru may not be strong... but he was NEVER weak. In fact, he may be the single strongest character in Re:ZERO.
Spoiler : She really cares about him a lot and "loves him" (you could classify her as the second person to have feelings for Subaru after Satilla.) There was no hope or even possibility neither for Subaru nor Emillia to survive the ordeal without the help of echidna. The whole arc can be summed up in that our Echidna is the one who "built them" and led them out of oppression to the light.

Echidna's dialogue was extremely well written. While she *was* comforting Subaru, her dialogue isn't exactly something people would when someone is going through a mental breakdown. Her "word of comfort" isn't actually words of comfort, but rather her speaking out her desire to know more about Subaru. It shows off Echidna's personality and identity. It shows off how Echidna identity as a witch, as seen with her terrible choice of word for comforting Subaru, and it shows off her personality of being a selfish individual, as while she is comforting Subaru, she is still seeking knowledge. Props to her voice actor as well, for nailing how Echidna would probably sound during this part. No real sympathy can be identify from Echidna's voice actor as she say her line, which is quite accurate to who Echidna is, an outsider who have no connection to Subaru and is only interested in him because of his peculiar situation. On a side note, as an anime only, Echidna best girl for me. Rem can be best girl to/for Subaru, and Emilia is Subaru's best girl, but Echidna is best for me.

This moment may and always be in my heart, for how long have I awaited those magic words to hear. For how long he had to suffer and die over and over. Now, its all over. Now, he can speak.
This scene is so powerfully cathartic. Every time I see it, it remembers me to his overwhelming traumas at experiencing death over, and over, and over; and solidifies them as the traumas they are, no brushing past them anymore as a method of convenience, but as the knife it really is, marring deeper and deeper into his mental state. All at once the pain and despair he’s been bottling up becomes so real I feel it for myself, as if the mental agony (if not the true pains he’s had) were mine all along, and just as quickly as it’s made apparent to me, this feeling of coping and making do this whole time; the moment this weight is revealed to me as something I’ve just gotten used to, since recognizing it for what it is should surely crush me, it’s lifted from my shoulders, just enough for another to slide next to me; and the relief at having even part of this burden eased is as though the whole mountain itself were off my shoulders. The author, director, and animators all knew insanely well how to capture this emotion and have done an absolutely masterful job at building this scene, the tension, and expressing this trauma. I can’t begin to properly express my awe at this scene’s beauty. Well done
Really good comment and I completely agree. This scene put me straight into Subaru's shoes and made me feel every ounce of anguish and burden that he had to carry up to this point.
I absolutely love Re:Zero. The story, the animation, the music.. everything is done perfectly in this scene. I would have enjoyed it anyways. I know because I read it. But Kobayashi Yuusukes acting just elevates this scene to a whole nother level. I can´t find words to describe how moved I am by his acting. Should this even be called acting? It´s just too real.. That´s how brightly his emotions shine through in this performance. No matter how many times I listen to this, it makes my heart ache every single time. I don´t even know what to say anymore.
took the words right out of my mouth. Re:Zero has been my favorite anime of all time, ever since I've watched the first season 4 years ago. and now the second season is here. and it somehow is even better. I'm so glad we're in a timeline where kobayashi yuusuke is the voice of Subaru.
I'm gonna be honest, I love Re: Zero, at first I didn't take a liking to it as it didn't look interesting, but when I got a few episodes in, I got more and more interested. There are so many feelings and thoughts to understand, but this scene sticks out to me the most, Subaru is finally able to express what has been happening after so long and I feel for him, finally being able to tell someone, being able to share a part of his life with someone else along with having someone console him about it. Sure Emelia was able to do this earlier in the anime, but being able to tell someone about "Return by Death" must've had so much pressure off of his chest. I've watched this scene more than 30 times and each time, and I can never get over it, I can relate to how Subaru feels, anger, pain, sorrow, anguish, each time it just hurts more and more when you look back on what's happened. I can't wait for the second half of season 2, I want Subaru to save not only others, but himself.
Yusuku Kobayashi did a great performance in this scene, he has the well-deserved award for best Japanese voice acting in the Anime Awards of this year! Excellent job!
If there is one very underappreciated and underrated MC in the isekai genre, that would only be Subaru. The physical pain and the indescribably extreme mental suffering he has to go through all alone isnt something words can describe. Re:Zero redefines cruelty with what Subaru has to go through.
Well Echidona is Witch of Greed, not a saint or nice girl or anything, so... I love how it makes perfect sense in context. She doesn't just suddenly treat Subaru like something precious.

Whose saying hes a weak protag? If ther r ppl saying this they dont know how strong this dudes mentality is compared to others
If you watch closely you can see that they climb in his mouth and eat him from the inside out...
Can't imagine getting eaten by rabbits... sorry

[Subaru: So…… I……]
Have to take it all back.

Such a good storywriting from the author. The studio just nailed it.
I watch this over 20 already
Black Rising Sun yep
Whether you favor Rem, Emilia, Otto, Echidna, or otherwise, we should all agree that Subaru is surrounded by people who care about him and make up for all the suffering he goes through.
echidna cares about him ... well, no
Caring for his ability to see that which could've happened and nothing else... Is still caring for him. In a sense...
Echidna doesn't care about him, at least not in an emotional sense. She isn't the type of girl who would cry in Subaru's funeral.
I've heard echidna lacks empathy right? And satella lacks love. the other witches lack a certain emotion too right? I believe subaru will be able to give them the emotions they don't have to be full on human.
N OMEGALUL
In my opinion, this is one of the most iconic moments of all time in anime. I have never felt emotions like this except in a few other shows. The way this was done deserves oscars. The way Subaru explained his pain and being alone broke my heart so much. I can't belive an anime can make u this emotional. Re zero will end up as one of the best animes ever.
I'm surprised the dude broke down after so long, kudos to him for having a will like this.
He's broken down other times as well hasn't he? Like the time with Rem or with Emila.
he broke down before.
Oh dont worry. For some personal reasons (not because she want to get knowledge) she will end up helping him.
And thats why her authority is weak
So... She is Google?
Re:Zero just made me realize that is the best isekai, imo, of all. Emotionally, with a good plot since the episode 1 up to now, it's a masterpiece. I don't care what others think of it, Re:Zero re-defines the Isekai genre in ways that others couldn't. OST, animation, plot, character development, voice acting, direction, etc... Everything is waaaay to perfect.
And now, 4 years later, after the S1, we recieve more and more of it, and this episode was rock solid the best so far that happened in this season.
I perfer konosuba but Re:Zero is good too
Konosuba is best in comedy. Overlord is basically op MC. Re:Zero is definitely hands down more relatable because the character isn't op and he has human flaws.
Re:Zero is not just best isekai. It is Top 3 series right now and probably will get Top 1 when all seasons get animated.
I feel you on this one bro 😮💨😮💨
Yeah, i feel like many people miss the fact that Subaru feels a very strong sense of loss whenever he dies.
Because he can go back in time, and knows the future. But still fails to save his friends, resulting in them suffering and he himself suffering too. This makes Subaru feel like a failure, he starts to blame himself for being too weak, too stupid and pathetic. Ofc it's not Subaru's fault, but he still blames himself. All of season 1 and 2 have resulted in Subaru having a very low self esteem of himself.
@@Nice-gh2hy Subuaru had a low sense of self esteem even before he was isekaid into one of the most miserable anime’s of all time. Case in point, the episodes with his parents.
@@crackededge9351 yes, but everything he went through in arc 1,2,3,4 and 5 just made it worse.

He keeps repeating the phrase because saying it was forbidden, you can really feel his pain in finally being able to explain it without any magic stopping it and let all his emotion out. I love this scene so much- it also makes me feel like a burden has been freed from my chest lol, amazing how this anime was crafted. It was my first, and will be my forever favorite!
It is a beautiful scene that is also juxtaposed by Satella’s (over)reaction to it.
Spoiler : She really cares about him a lot and "loves him" (you could classify her as the second person to have feelings for Subaru after Satilla.)
There was no hope or even possibility neither for Subaru nor Emillia to survive the ordeal without the help of echidna. The whole arc can be summed up in that our Echidna is the one who "built them" and led them out of oppression to the light.
@@fakerweldi7879 well, she helped them out mostly for her own personal gains. Echidna wouldn't help someone and expect nothing in return.

Well done

The mental and emotional pain he feel is much deeper then any death he ever felt.
Now that the season is over, what you think overall man??
Yusuku Kobayashi did a great performance in this scene, he has the well-deserved award for best Japanese voice acting in the

God damn this is a masterpiece. Everything from the atmosphere, voice acting, and music all tie together perfectly.
If there is one very underappreciated and underrated MC in the isekai genre, that would only be Subaru. The physical pain and the indescribably extreme mental suffering he has to go through all alone isnt something words can describe. Re:Zero redefines cruelty with what Subaru has to go through.
