If they built a new updated version of this ride, with today's animatronics, projection mapping and trackless ride technology it could be incredible.

There’s elevations within the ride building so a trackless system wouldn’t work unless they plowed the entire site and started over again.

@@Shag471 True, though I think the elevations are artificial - to do it you'd need to gut the building and start again regardless.

@@andrewraphael3800 The ground is definitely raised in some parts and there’s a big pit near the end of the ride. Also, the original concept had it traveling to the second floor. But to graze the entire building and start over isn’t ever in their plans. If they chose to do that then they would just put something else there.
That happened to Horizons. They wanted to convert the current ride into a space pavilion and even had detailed plans showing the conversion. But the sponsor wanted a whole new building so they plowed the building and started all over again.
Being that Imagination hasn’t had a sponsor since 2010 I highly doubt Disney would go to those measures to build a whole new ride unless they got a corporate sponsor. I think they will just keep the current version running until it breaks entirely and they will either close the pavilion or use it for other purposes, like they did with Wonders of Life after Met Life pulled out.

At the last D23 Expo I saw Tony Baxter as I was leaving a panel and he talked to me for a bit. When I told him that I hope he can re-do Journey Into Imagination, he said, "I've told them [Disney] that if they ever greenlight a new version I will come back out of retirement to work on it." It indicated how proud he's of this original version and I hope he does get the chance to remake this masterpiece.

The hype around Figment and the original ride.. the fanbase, the merchandise, the controversy over refurbs.. can often eclipse the purity and charm of a slow moving, no height requirement ride populated with original characters and animatronics. It's so small and simple, yet also summarizes what was special about epcot.

I first came to Walt Disney World in early January of 1987. I was only 7 years old and Epcot was just barely 4 years old. As a kid from northern Michigan living in a small town of only 1,800 people, all of Disney absolutely blew my mind. Of course it was only just Magic Kingdom and Epcot at the time. But Epcot in particular had an enormous impact on my life, and the ripple effect of that still lasts to this day. I wasn’t even aware of the 1964 New York City World’s Fair, but the similarities and goals were so much what Epcot became, and I’ve become fascinated with it as an adult. I’d have really loved it had I been around for it. But Future World at Epcot taught me so much about history, inspired me, and made me optimistic and excited about the future. Then the World Showcase, as a person who has really never even left my home state until my Disney trip, opened my eyes so much to all the Greer other cultures and places in the world. I’ve always loved science and especially as a kid, absolutely loved dinosaurs. So the Universe of Energy was easily my favorite ride, and just left me speechless. But I think Journey Into Imagination was easily my second favorite area. I miss the way that it originally was like this, and getting to go up into the crystal pyramid. At the time I was first there too, Captain EO had just opened in the Magic Eye Theater, and as a Michael Jackson fan, just as everyone was in the mid-80’s, it was incredible. I still to this day have many things from that trip, from a park map, to plastic bags, to my plush Figment, still in perfect condition. He was my favorite character from the parks back then. My trips to Disney inspired me so much, that I eventually moved to the Orlando area as an adult, to go to college and to work. I’ve lived in the area now for 25 years, and live just 3 miles directly north of Magic Kingdom as the crow flies. But Epcot is still my favorite park, and I’ve been there the most over the years, from holidays, to races, to even some professional jobs. I understand that even Walt said the parks would never e finished, constantly updating, but it breaks my heart s little to see some of what I feel the overall messages of Epcot were, being lost. Rides like Guardiansof the Galaxy or Frozen may be fun, but what do they actually teach you? Nothing in my opinion. Some of Epcot’s original rides were not only fun, but you learned things from them too. I think this has increasing been lost, in favor of anything that simply draws in crowds to make a profit. But it’s hard to describe just how amazing Epcot was in its earliest years, if A) you didn’t experience it, and B) didn’t experience it as a kid. Before the days of social media or even the internet, you were lucky to even find still images from the parks, much less see a video. So when you arrived, you barely had any IDEA what you were in store for. And if your only even remotely similar experience before that was your county fair? Wow! It was like going forward in time 300 years. Thanks for posting these videos. I still have yet to send in my family’s extensive camcorder videos from our summer 1989 Disney trip, when both MGM Studios and Typhoon Lagoon were just a few months old. But I’ve finally had it all professionally digitized, so look for that soon!

You’re 100% right. Epcot from 82 until the demise of Horizons was the most ambitious thing WDI ever did. It was an absolutely incredible experience. I’ll never forget when I got high (weed) and went with friends to Epcot. I’ll never forget that single experience. I just rode spaceship earth yesterday. It give me such strong nostalgic feels. I was a member of the Projection & Special Effects maintenance team when "Imag" opened in '83 and would like to thank everyone involved in the restoration. Seeing the show again brings back so many memories of what it took to maintain such a complex creation. There were 19 motion picture projectors (35mm & 70mm), over 300 special effect projectors, two class IV lasers in Scene 7 and a few class III lasers in the Dream Port. Something I hadn't recalled in years was the difficulty the ride control team had synchronizing entry of each train into one of the 5 identical scenes on the turntable (scene 3). Turntable entry and exit were right next to each other but visually isolated by a set wall. A curved piece of track, momentarily visible in the video, was installed during constriction to allow vehicles to run on the rest of the ride but bypass scene 3. Turntable intrusions caused a LOT of downtime.

This was, maybe weirdly, my favorite ride/experience of Epcot as a kid. I truly felt inspired going through. Part of why, I think, is because of the love and care that went into developing and creating this attraction - in true Walt Disney style. Because Walt legitimately cared about his creations, and the experiences to be had for the kids and families. You can tell the people that worked on it, cared about it. At least that's my impression. The new version of this ride exudes corporate decision making and faceless/nameless indifference. A big ole Fail that no-one cares about.

I remember it fondly as a child and miss it dearly. I'll never forgive WDW for revamping it. Figment and Dreamfinder were from a unique origin where they were created for the attraction only... not from a movie or other product line. IIRC, figment was largely left out of the '99 revamp. Only after some backlash did Disney incorporate Figment back into Journey into YOUR imagination. Disney grossly underestimated the popularity and public perception of this attraction. Figment appealed to all races and types (Figment is/was one of the most androgynous disney figures) and is a well-loved character.

I just came back from doing the new "updated" version they have now. While it is still unique and a fun ride, I looked into the history of it when I got back. Couldn't believe there was an original version that was SO much different than it is today.
What a spectacular ride this must have been!!! Thank you so much for sharing this and giving those of us who missed the opportunity the first time around to enjoy it now!

I first rode this when I was 10 in late October of 83 until it was “refurbished” around 2002. I just saw it tonight after 21 ish years. My memory told me the old ride was better. After tonight no question the old ride is a timeless classic compared to what it is today. All it needed was some updates in technology. So sad in my opinion Disney felt it was too long and was too expensive to keep operational.

This brings back so many wonderful memories...this entire experience from the jumping fountains, the attraction, Dreamfinder and Figment, and the rainbow tunnel for me that was the most magnificent thing ever. I hope they bring back Journey into Imagination back to its former days of glory. Thank you so much for sharing!

Figment & Dreamfinder! The rainbow tunnel! This ride was our favorite at Epcot when I went as a kid in the 80s. Went back with just my mom when I was in college, after they changed it, and we were soooo disappointed. I even had a Figment plush from the 80s. I wish I could watch this vid with her but Covid took her last year. Thanks for putting this together.

4:12 It is amazing how modern & steam punk this ride looks through today's eyes. It would have aged like the Peter Pan, the Haunted Mansion, or Pirates of the Caribbean.
The same can't be said for the current iteration. Not only did it completely miss the point of the original and turn Figment's "childish delight" into annoying mischief, it has also aged about as well as the 90's intro to Bill Nye the science guy episodes. I still love you Bill, but those 90's intros can't exactly be deemed timeless.

Great video! Thank you! Having experienced the jaw-dropping versions of WDW and especially EPCOT Center from the late ‘80s through early 2000s, I had given up on the resort around 2015. Then I visited the Tokyo Disney Resort, and DisneySea blew my mind the way Epcot and Animal Kingdom used to. Newer Disney fans don’t seem to understand how immersive and effortless the magic was in the United States, but at least we have videos like this to remind us!

My God what a ride that was. We just got back and while the newest version is better than the last, it's a far cry tlfrom this.
Going to Epcot in the 90's, I was able to ride some of the original rides, and some of the first replacements. But Figment was, and still is my favorite Disney character. Man zid love to ride this again. Thanks for the upload!

My first WDW trip was 1993 and the original version of this ride was among my favorites. Thank you SO MUCH for the restored footage! I could even smell the area with the science labs and the trunk full of clapping hands, just after the dreamport. If I recall, there was a big spinning “tornado”. But my favorite scene of all was the white wash carousel and garden.

As a 15 y.o who has only ever experienced the new/updated version of this ride, thank you! Figment has weirdly enough, been my favorite character since I was five on my first trip to Disney (and I'm SUPER excited to meet him for the first time on my upcoming trip during Festival of the Arts!). After learning the history of the ride, it makes me sad to see a once beloved and popular ride almost completely gone and reimagined. It's a shame I was never able to experience this, but I'm glad I can through video and hear about all the wonderful memories of this ride through people in these comments. I love the appreciation Figment has been getting in these recent years and I can only hope that leads to better things to come and a possible refurbishment of Journey Into Imagination with Figment (fingers crossed!).

Oh my god. I love this. I've been obsessed with this version of the ride for years now, and this is literally a dream come true. (Now they just need to bring it back-) Jokes aside, this is amazing. The footage may not be insanely good, but for me, it's awesome. It was awesome to see the Figment animations from ImageWorks in full, and that Magic Palette thing? Oh my god, that's probably one of the cutest things I've seen in my life. The Dreamport storage room that's usually a void in videos actually having visible things literally made me tear up, I'm serious. In short, This is probably one of my favorite videos, if not my favorite video, I've seen on this platform. Thank you so much.

I rarely comment on anything but this is incredible! This was my favorite ride at EPCOT (I was an 80's kid). I remember the water outside, the Image works!!! We spent so much time there playing and enjoying the experiences!!! I took my son two years ago because I wanted him to experience it. It was so disappointing, bland and terrible!!! THIS RIDE is so full of rich detail, joyful music and enriching experiences for kids of all ages!!! Dreamfinder was like Santa Claus with the most jolly demeanor. Figment was so happy and carefree!!! I miss the old Disney and especially the old Imagineers that made the experience so magical! The magic at Disney is dying and it's so sad.....

I really wish that after all the work on Epcot, they move on to re-doing Journey into Imagination and doing it right this time. I actually like the current itteration, but after seeing what it was, it's really hard to go ride it without being slightly bitter.

I've always wondered why Disney never properly filmed these old rides after completion. When a ride this old goes away, all we have are people's vacation videos on subpar media (although this video shows we can now digitally enhance and try to wring out some good quality after the fact). You always see snippets of professional filmed promotions to advertise the rides in the past, but I guess it never occured to them to document the whole ride in each case. If they did so on film, we could have had a really nice source to scan from, but I guess it was never a thing back then.

Yes the nostalgia is awesome. I remember all this. When I was a kid we'd drive down to Disney World from NJ almost every summer. Still miss this ride and Mr Toad's Wild Ride and 20000 Leagues Under the Sea the most. I don't know if Spaceship Earth has changed since last time I went. Also miss Universe of Energy a lot. I also remember how impressed I was with Captain Eo. The comparison to previous 3D effects showed so much progress. Totally looked like you'd be able to touch that flying furby thing. Hope to continue watching these videos
