    Everyone needs to see the recobbled version. The way they ruined this man's entire life's work is tragic and cruel. A frightening example of how something you make can be warped and perverted and completely misunderstood if it falls into the wrong hands, usually because they have money and you don't.

    Watching this seriously upsets me. I really love the look of Tak and the style of certain parts of the movie; like the chase scene and how they use the nails in his mouth to show of facial expression instead of just showing him smiling. It just seems like a waste of something that could have been really fun and enjoyable, turning into something that's been done 1000 times already and not even done well.

      Original cut doesn't exist. Recobbled Cut is just the movie without the song numbers and some of the original animation and storyboards.
      The Original Cut is lost forever.

      @shanefleming9104 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      ES21007 actually, the work print still exist, which is a low quality version of the recobbled cut. it IS the original cut except some of the scenes don't have any animation and is just storyborads. the recoiled cut IS the same story as the original cut, except in higher quality than the work print.
      so yes, watch the reccobbled cut. its as closed to the original finished film you can get.

      yeah i feel so bad for the animator, he thought this was going to be his masterpiece and spent an extremely long time working on it. then the company that took it just could care less about how creative the animator was and just worried about pleasing everyone so they could make quick money off of it..

      Actually, several countries got The Princess and the Cobbler instead, which is basically this version minus the constant monologuing from Tak and the Thief. The songs are still bland, and Mathew Broderick is no Sean Connery, but at least they got the name of the city right. (It's the Golden City, not Bagdad!)

      Xalener Balener That's an incredibly good point, and something Critic should've thought about. Then again, Critic, while a person I respect, often goes off a little half-cocked. I often find myself watching him review my favorite movies, and he'll start a rant about how a movie didn't explain something. But the fact is, the movie actually DOES explain it, sometimes even in great detail, and Critic's just not been paying attention.

  • @emilherran

    Tak's skin color changing made a lot more sense inn the original, and the re-cobbled cut. Since he never talked, Tak's development as a character was brought forth through those around him. Because of that, he became a more developed character as the story went on; and as that was happening his design became more complex to match the development. At the end, when Yum Yum and Tak get married is a fully developed character and looks like a human being. When that happens, he is finally able to speak. The original version was actually a very complex piece of artwork. I would have loved to see what it would have been like if it weren't bought by another company.

    Having sen the Recobbled Cut, yeah I can agree it's a massive improvement. Though I'm still not absolutely certain it's a great film or a great story, it is some of the best and most stylish animation I've ever seen. I guess I see it as more 'Culturally Significant' to the history of animation, than genuinely good. Kinda like the english release of Akira.

    • @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing
      @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, I think most folks will agree that Akira the dub is a pretty good adaption and movie, as compared to Thief and the Cobbler, which is just good in the animation department.

    • @Extellus
      @Extellus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the whole point of the movie was animation itself.

    • @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing
      @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much. The original creator wanted a magnum opus for his animation skills from what I heard and read, so I suppose it's kind of hard to compare the two films by that thought.

    • @BobLogical
      @BobLogical 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      George G-Man Have you seen the original dub, though? It's not as good as the redubbed version from 2001 with JYB.

    • @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing
      @The_Red_Pyramid_Thing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have it and I stand by my comment. If we're talking subs, then that'll be better, but back to the original comparison, I say Akira cannot really be compared to Thief and the Cobbler in terms of badness. 80s dubbing might not be e'rryone's cup o' tea, but it was still a pretty solid, if not weird as feces movie.

    I can't remember which version it was I saw years ago, but it included a scene that wasn't in this version. It's when the thief will get his hands cut off but he uses he backscratchers instead. What happened to this project is a tragedy. Disney ended up purchasing the rights, half-assed the rest of the movie, added songs (which was not the original vision of Richard Williams), and then sent it straight to Video--but not before stealing the storys premise and making a best seller out of Aladdin. I suggest watching the actual history behind it and not this annoying review. Then go watch The Thief and The Cobbler: Recobbled (an artistic attempt to re-create Williams original vision).

    See, the published version of this film forgets one thing that the recobbled edit brought back:
    *SILENCE IS GOLDEN*
    In the recobbled version, I found Tack to be more fun and enjoyable, with him being mute creating a Charlie Chaplin-esque feel, while giving him a voice made him transition into what felt like two different people: the Charlie Chaplin and the guy Matthew Broderick was trying to portray. And the scene with the head tilting between him and Princess Yumyum, their lack of any vocal expression made the moment more innocent and adorable, while this version just made them seem like they were trying too hard.

    If anyone's curious, the Recobbled Cut is being actively developed, and is tiptoing towards a complete picture of Richard Williams' vision. The source files are, wherever possible, being scanned at 4K resolution, with an eye to being ready for a theatrical release if one ever becomes possible. It's some of the greatest animation ever made--you owe it to yourselves to check it out.

Actually it has always had a long interesting culture that has adapted from multiple different events in history, just not in the way that the rest of the world has adapted. For example if you look up Iran before the revolution a couple decades back it was actually a fairly westernized country.

    This is a very elegantly thought out piece of animation--the original, anyway. The practical use of filling Tack's mouth with tacks was not simply to give him a sudden way to defeat the enemy at the end (I don't even think that was part of the original script)--it was to give him an excuse for rarely if ever speaking in the film--his mouth is occupied. As obvious as this might sound, it's worth pointing out that this is to symbolize his status in the hierarchy of the story, a story which was originally meant to be told almost entirely in images, like the earliest animated films in history were. Tack's voice, his opinion, has no worth in this society because of his servitude. This is relieved of course, when he marries Yum Yum. But the people who "finished" the movie didn't get it. That's why he's got SO much monologue--it was to fill his non speaking appearances for the adults who are terrified children won't be able to follow a story that doesn't directly talk to them. Same for the thief. Same for why there needs to be singing.
    I really hope someone out there attempts to try something like this again--a play on the fairy tale genre that is more invented than copied, and doesn't care if it looks weird or not.

    I JUST watched a restoration of Richard Williams' version of this movie, before it was bent over and thoroughly anally destroyed by whoever took over and kicked him off the project. Now, it does have scenes which are little more than pencil drawn pictures or CLEARLY undone animated bits, the quality changes from gorgeous to gore at the drop of a pin, but if you can look back the bits that Richard Williams' had not finished, or at least enjoy it with an open mind, then you'll see that The Thief and the Cobbler truly is an outstanding flick. They don't rely on voices to tell you everything that's going on at every single moment, there's pretty much NOTHING in here that had me rolling my eyes and going "Well, seen this before...", it's an insane and insanely original movie. Truly is horrible that THIS is what they did to it...
    Well of course there's a lot of it that was ripped from this and put into Aladdin which was an amazing movie as well, but considering the time at which it was SUPPOSED to be released, it's thoroughly original. That crap about the Princess wanting a new life, the ongoing inner thoughts of the Cobbler as well as the Thief, those aren't present. The movie relies more on visuals than on audio, and considering the quality of the visuals (during all the parts where the visuals are fully finished/coloured), the outcome is remarkable.
    Oh, and did I mention?... THERE'S BASICALLY NO SINGING WHATSOEVER! Sure the geni- I mean, ZigZag, rhymes all his lines, but it's really not as annoying as you might think. In fact I think there's a part or two in which he doesn't rhyme, unless I just didn't follow it correctly. God, that bit where the monologue of the Thief taking the balls referencing a 'rec room' and 'Disney land'? Just... forget EVERYTHING you seen in this vid, go download the RESTORED version, and be amazed how a gen incrusted pearl can be turned into a rotten peanut incrusted turd. Seriously, the original is worth a watch. This 'official release', however... is worth forgetting.
    Edit: 16:00 Yeah, I started noticing the change in skin colour at the end of the movie when he basically goes all-out Arabian. Quite a dark tan. Something I'd like to bring up however is a couple things in the movie that I didn't much like. You know those purple guys carrying around the chest? They're black in the movie, and with large reddish lips as I recall, basically blackface. Then for the Thief, you know, the snakey, smelly, fly-ridden, big-nosed character? The one who is practically taken from Nazi propaganda posters? The top of his had looks like a star of David, and it's shown a few times in the original. Then there's a scene where the Sultan yells that they're 'doomed' or will be 'destroyed' which brings the camera up high over the Sultan looking down at JUST the right moment when he's saying the word so you can see all the Star of David like marks on the floor. Seriously, it's just about PERFECTLY on cue with saying doomed/destroyed or whatever the word was. I'm think that mid 60s Richard Williams was something of a racist/anti-Semite... that, and/or America was just accepting of such things back then, which isn't an entirely ridiculous thing to think about.
    In fact, you know the movie Night of the Living Dead? The 1968 classic by George A Romero, the GOD of zombies, he who created the modern day decaying/slow/shammbling/bite-infecting/brainless masses of rotten flesh that can only be destroyed via the brain? A review was written about that movie, and it noted how strange it was that the main character was black. Generally he was referred to, not by his character's name, not by his actor's name, but simply as "the negro". So yeah, the 60s were a VERY different time. Political correctness CAN go too far, but a complete lack there of is even worse.
    Ah, did I mention that not only does the Princess/Cobbler never sing, but also, the Brigains never sing either? Nope! No pointless songs! I recall the witch's advice to also be not quite so bland, in fact just about the entire section in which she's on screen is a mixture of hilarious insanity and somewhat uncomfortable animation. The swinging saggy tits in particular. The rest is pretty awesome though. As for the huge war machine being taken down with a single tack, the process is FASCINATING! Oh yeah, and although the Thief is essentially hand made to be put into an anti-Jewish WWII era German cartoon, he DOES end up being a good guy at the end, so that's a plus.
    Ah, he mensions the Recobbled edition in the end, I really should finish watching videos before starting a comment, while commenting as I watch the vid. Anyways, he might not think it's fantastic, but I think it is. Very pleasant movie, even though some parts are, as mentioned/shown, unfinished.

    Critic makes a good point about Princess Yum Yum. She claims she is faster and smarter than anyone else in the whole city, but I don't buy it. I'm not saying she isn't potentially capable of being those things, only that there are no examples of it as far as I can tell.
    Not only that, but I think it's pretty dumb to have servants carry you the whole way on your journey even though you're trying to seem inconspicuous and undercover. Also they would only be slowed down by having to carry her around the whole way. So if you think about it she is actively doing something dumb that is only serving to slow her and everyone else with her down.

      I thought I heard a "great mouse detective" reference there at the very end after Vincent price blows up the critic's house

      The full version's available on youtube. You'd best watch it while it hasn't been descended upon by the copyright vultures.

    I remeber this movie as a kid and loved it because I DID NOT KNOW ANY BETTER!
    Now that I'm older, I can see yes it's a crap movie but the animation/art especially that chase scene are very unique surreal and nicely done.

    The Unedited version without the Aladdin-style song breaks is a masterpiece and should be in the Criterion for its art style. The other ones...feels like it's trying too hard to be another Aladdin copy.

    I first saw this movie as the unfinished version. As an animation student, I really loved the scenery, and all the work that went into the characters and objects. I loved how Tac and the Thief didn't talk. Especially the Thief. He was far more hilarious just with his actions alone. Then I saw this version....after I bounced off the walls in screaming fits of rage, I went into a corner and sobbed. Yes people, this movie was fucked up that badly!

    The first time I watched this was when I had a really bad stomach bug and I couldn't keep anything down. So when I stopped gagging, I sat down to watch this (after the very first review I ever watched of his, Eight Crazy Nights) and the "I Heart Love" skit was the moment I realized I had found my favorite TH-camr.

    I like that the animation doesn't have that disney 3d look, it gives it a good animated picture book feel.

    I like it that the princess ("yumyum ? really??) in the beginning dreams of being more than just pretty and well, a generic princess ... and in tehend she doesn't seem to do anythign of importance and reaches the height of her happiness by marrying that weird Morlok-nerd-guy ... because only marriage makes girls truly happy and fullfilled? Hurrah! I mean harruh...

    =n= Miramax is satan. This is proof. The original uncobbled version is so beautiful, no shitty musical numbers, Tack talks 1 time, the theif never talks. This is kind of like Cinema Snob's DV-R hell watching of Deception of a Generation in how a lot of the badness is being leveled at this really poor cut when the original does show so much artistry and beauty.

    • @georgemiser
      @georgemiser 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      are you trying to say ''we're what happens when you dont finish school'' is a ''shitty musical number''

    • @moraismeep
      @moraismeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. If you watch Brad's main beef with the arguments they try to make is about how criticism is leveled at the villains and not the actual show itself which only an insane stupid person would connect with things like paganism or witchcraft. =T NC's pretty-much leveling so much of this on a product that was not a part of the creator's original vision. It was shit out by a producer and Disney pretty-much STOLE the idea to do Aladin from the "recobbled" version of this film.
