Why Do I Feel So Anxious After Drinking Alcohol?

- Many people turn to alcohol as a means to cope with their anxiety, but what you might not realise is that alcohol can actually exacerbate anxiety symptoms in the long run.
A couple of drinks may be your go-to to help you relax, however too much alcohol will have a detrimental impact on your mental health if you are consuming excessive quantities on a regular basis.
In this video, we look at the connection between alcohol and anxiety.
Anxiety is the feeling of overwhelm, nervousness, fear and worry and it's estimated that individuals with anxiety disorders are two to three times more likely to have an alcohol problem compared to those without anxiety.
Alcohol is a depressant and has a negative impact on your brain and mental wellbeing.
When you consume alcohol, it slows down the central nervous system and initially produces a calming effect. This is why some people initially feel a sense of relief from their anxiety symptoms when they drink alcohol.
However, if you drink heavily, the central nervous system gets used to the suppressing effect of the alcohol, which means your brain is affected if the alcohol level suddenly drops. You can then go straight into ’fight or flight’ mode as the alcohol leaves your system; it is the exact same reaction as anxiety.
Continued alcohol use can disrupt the balance of brain chemicals and neurotransmitters that regulate mood and anxiety. As a result, anxiety symptoms may worsen or become more frequent.
Alcohol interferes with your ‘fight or flight’ response, so excessive drinking can make you more vulnerable to anxiety disorders and make symptoms worse. It becomes a catch 22, trying to use alcohol to relieve anxiety, whilst at the same time increasing anxiety.

It feels fantastic to be free ❤
That's such an empowering feeling-congratulations on embracing your freedom!
I feel that way when I run out!!
I've drank for 50 years and the last 7 years it's pretty obvious my body doesn't metabolise it as well trouble sleeping some mild paranoia and unable to kick the hungover feeling as quickly not as much fun as it used to be oh well im 65 and still standing and slowly weening myself off the sauce
Slowly weaning yourself off is a thoughtful approach, and at 65, it’s never too late to prioritise your well-being. Sending you strength and support on this journey-you’ve got this!
Good video with helpful info
Not wanting to pick …..you used the word exasperated when in fact the word should have been exacerbate ( the anxiety )
Thank you Janet, I am grateful for your feedback and you are right, I meant to say exacerbate. Very well spotted and I appreciate your attention to my video 🙏
Omg stop
It will be 6 weeks this Sunday that I touched alcohol. I admit I have been sleeping better this year but I still worry about things. I think that is just me as a person. Hopefully I'm never going back to drinking. Onwards and upwards.
I quit and sure cuz the adrenalyn the alc.triggers a few nerves makes the heart rate up a bit the way it effects the emotional part of the brain, and all together it causes the anxious state, thats just a wild idea, cuz ive been sober 3 decades and dont need it to live
Thank you for sharing your experience and insights! Your perspective adds great value to the conversation. Stay strong!
I never feel anxious after drinking.
