Suzanne-thank you! Another great video! The perfect matching bind-off for my daughter's birthday shawl. I had worried about the bind-off & you, again, have given the PERFECT answer. Video is concise, yet includes all the info a knitter would need. ❤️
This is so ridiculously beautiful. I'm binding off a garther stitch edge on a sweater and the continuity is almost making me cry with happiness. It's my first sweater. I'm excited. Thank you for your help, Suzanne!
I used this on the garter stitch buttonhole bands and back neck of a cardigan I knit for my granddaughter. I found using one size larger needle to bind off helped. I would never have tried it without your help.
I really like the way you show how to finish off the last stitch when binding off in the round. Other online vids don’t show how to finish off the last stitch when doing the Icelandinc bind off.
This is one of my favorite bind off’s. I was almost in a trace watching you demonstrate. I love how decorative it makes the project. A post from your Facebook knitting group for me interested in learning this bind off method. Thank you for a wonderful video tutorial
So beautiful! I was looking for a nice bind off for a cabled project and this is great! It's even possible to knit the cable stitches in pairs together and bind them off in one go👍 Thank you!
Merci Suzanne, as usual this is a very usefull video, very well filmed with many details and explanations on the movements of the needles, the structure of the stitches and the video is slow enough so we have time to catch everything and to practice at the same time. you are a great teacher! Catherine (france)
Suzanne, should one "tweak" what will become the last stitch on the bind-off row to prevent an enlarged final stitch? In other words, should one use a reverse stitch mount for the 2nd stitch on the last row before the bind-off? For anyone reading this, Suzanne's video on preventing an enlarged last stitch is excellent!
I can't believe I have been doing this bind off wrong! When I read how to do it, I misinterpreted the instruction to "insert the needle through the second stitch as if to knit". I've been going through that stitch and straight out the back. Then I yarn over and pull the knit st through both stitches. Watching your video very closely, I see that you are going through that st and then back out through the first st so only one st is over the right needle when you yarn over for the knit st. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MY METHOD as it results in just a slight variation of the standard bind off. It does not make a decorative bind off like the Icelandic bind of is intended to be. Thanks so much for the clear video showing the correct way to do it.
Isn't it amazing what a very small thing can do for your knitting! I am a self taught knitter too. I hope you have chosen to subscribe to my channel and that you will spread my video everywhere. Happy knitting.
Hi, I tried this bind off both in garter stitch and in stockinette, following your advices. it is quick and easy. It is really beautifull in garter stitch because it allows the fabric to stay very flat, the edge is exactly like another garter stitch row and doesn't bend or curve on the front side, like a regular bind off. So it is completely reversible. In stockinette, it is interesting and even decorative because it produces a little ridge almost like a little i-cord but the fabric rolls on it self (not so much..) Catherine (sorry for me"french" english style of writing...) PS: 300 stitches in a minute Suzanne? yeah!
I, too, noticed how great your zoom in and out were. Do you have the camera on some kind of a stand? And, do you use some kind of attached tool to zoom in and out?
Not really. But I will tell you a little trick I use to make a nice garter looking edge. You can do this on both the cast on and bind off edges. It is super simple and looks lovely. CO in Long Tail. Then you will work 2 rows or rounds of reverse Stockinette st, then go to Stockinette. So, if your first row/round in a RS, purl all the way around or across, then work the second row in knit or round in purl. This gives a nice little garter looking ridge right at the edge of the fabric. If you are about to bind off, work 2 rows/rnds of reverse Stockinette, then bind off. Let me know what you think. I love hearing your comments.
I will give that a go, sounds good to me! Thanks for the explanation.. I'm currently doing the tubular cast on in the round and the cuf for a pair of fingerless mittens; your tutorials and pattern :-) That explaines maybe my interest in matching cast ons and bind offs....I'll post it later in the group on ravelry okay?
I've knitted a swatch using your trick Suzanne. It is drying at the moment. Shall I share it in the group on Ravelry? I have written my own 'instructions ' on what I did. Hopefully that is what you meant? I noticed 1 thing....the bind off looks a bit 'more' than the cast on. Do you know what I mean?
I’ve just started knitting and really like your tutorials, easy to follow along with and you zoom into the project. You also explain the pros and cons of certain methods and best of all you demo the English way to do a stitch too. Thank you so much for your time. I read somewhere you have a Facebook group/page?
Hi Suzanne. Yet another great video. I have made a baby jacket that has a garter stitch yoke, Question: Is this bind off pliable enough to use as a bind off for the neck edge?I had intended to work a sewn cast off as it almost replicates the garter stitch. I would appreciate your thoughts. Michelle UK
This is not one that I would use for a toe up sock unless you want to use it as a design element. It would not go well with ribbing. But - here are two links to stretchy bind off videos that I have made recently. Try a couple of swatches with these and test them out and see which one(s) work for you. th-cam.com/video/ipKabBiI44o/w-d-xo.html, and th-cam.com/video/k7hTBIp5WBw/w-d-xo.html.
It looks to me like this is the same as slip1, knit1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. However, you're doing it in one fluid motion. Is this the process I am seeing? Looks good!
Actually, what you are describing is the standard bind off. In this bind off, the stitch is knit first, then you go through that stitch to work into the next stitch. Similar but quite different. Thanks for commenting. Happy Knitting.
Thanks! So, you're actually passing the stitch over before knitting that next stitch. Therefore, the yarn ends up on the right or top side of that slipped stitch instead of under that slipped stitch. Thus, giving a little more ease in the slipped stitch.
Yes. Grab some needles and a bit of yarn and try it. I do a lot of experimenting with swatches. It makes it clearer in my mind when I can see my hands going through the motions. You can compare the two bind offs, standard - vs - this one and see the difference in real life. This gives a more pronounced and rounder edge. More decorative and somewhat reminiscent of a small i-cord edge.
Try both ways and see which you prefer. This is a variation of the decrease bind off. In the standard decrease bind off, the finished edge has a chain, knit stitches. In the Icelandic bind off the finished edge has a garter or purl edge which is what makes it so interesting. In order to get that purl edge, the stitches should be worked as shown in my video. If you turn the stitch before working it, you get the knit edge. In the books "Cast On Bind Off" by Leslie Ann Bestor and "Cast On, Bind Off" by Cap Sease, both authors slip that stitch back to the left needle tip to tip. Thank you for watching my video and commenting. I love researching knitting. Happy knitting.
Good instruction. I watched it so I could decide if it would look good on my project. At the end, shouldn't the viewer get a look at the finished bind off? Let us see the front, top and back.
As always the quality of your video really enhances what you are telling us. So well done.
Thank you, Dorothy, that's a lovely thing to say and very appreciated! ❤️

I have always enjoyed your videos. I think that you do not edit your slipped or mistakes. You just show how to fix it. Thank you 😉😊

Thank you for the very clear & concise lesson! You are a great teacher!
Thank you itram! Happy knitting.
It really helps to use fairly pointy needles like these Hiya Hiya needles.
I love this bind off! Super easy and looks great on my sweater sleeve bottom.
Wonderful!

VERY Beautiful but difficult looking gotta try this.
When would you choose to use this bind off typically please?
Thanks Suzanne.
This is a good bind off for when you want a decorative edge. It also looks good at the bottom of garter stitch.
Great close up work. What camera are you using?
I do agree. The close up filming is amazing and just stays in focus. Love your clear explanations too.
Thank you. I use my iPhone X.
Thank you and happy knitting.

Is there a matching icelandic cast on? Thank you for all the wonderful tutorials Suzanne!!

Yes, that is perfect. You might also try the Twisted German or Old Norwegian CO if you are experimenting. th-cam.com/video/RlE_diUDPkE/w-d-xo.html

what is the "reason" for this bind off?? is it just decorative?? it does not seem to be tighter or looser than a regular bid off - great video
Yes, it is decorative and goes nicely with garter stitch. It has the same amount of stretch as a regular bind off. Thank you and happy knitting.

This is pliable and decorative. Try it on a swatch first and see what you think. Thank you and happy knitting.
Thanks for the video. Would this be stretchy enough for a toe-up sock cuff?

This is a very pretty bind off BUT it doesn't appear to be very stretchy, is it?? Thanks for the video.
It is about as stretchy as a regular bind off. If you want to try it, make a swatch first to test for yourself. Thank you and happy knitting.
Mam thanks very innovative binding I am knitting with two color swater wl try this method of binding with two colors
Wonderful! Let me know how you like it! Happy knitting.
On very pink knits Stacey repositioned the knit stitch to "untwist", rather than a simple point to point slip.
