I remember watching these videos as a medical student and Geeky Medics was actually just starting out. I've been a doctor for about 6 years now and use these videos every now and then for reference :). Thank you Geeky Medics for creating this great resource!
Doctors rarely have time during a routine 10 minute appointment to do all these thorough and helpful examinations. Many have even forgotten how to do them fully IMO due to lack of practice.
I think the sequence should be Inspection - Auscultation - Percussion/Palpation. Palpating prior to auscultation might distort bowel sounds. Also, it's recommended to ask the patient to bend the knees so that abdominal muscles are not tense. Writing these to help out other medical students out there! :)
A very informative video. A suggestion: While palpating various organs, it would be great if you add the area of palpatation. Like for liver, you can add which intercostal space to palpate for.
Thak you guys for the great work. One thing i would do differently though is hearing for bowel sounds at the start and not at the end because all of these manouvers and palpations may temporarily alter bowel movement and thus give you a false positive.
My professor emphasized that you should start abdominal auscultation first before palpation and percussion in case that tap on abdomen affect the movement of gastrointestinal tract then affecting the sound.
Question: How do you define increased bowel sounds? Also, shouldn't auscultation be done before palpation or percussion for abdomen? (To prevent alteration in bowel sounds)
2-35 per minute according to Bates guide is the normal range. so above that is abnormal... and yes, auscultation before palpation. the pneumonic is IAPP when examining the abdomen 👍
thanks a lot for the video and the explanation if i may add this ( we should do auscultation of the abdomen before percussion not to upset the stomach )
Great video...watching over and over again ..great explanation and hv heart sound, bowel sound and etc ..been great help...just watch over and over again for cardio, respitory, abdominal examination ...and really help me a lot..thank you geeky medic...
Those videos are really usefull. Im very thankful to you guys. Im really am. During the pandemi, i will watch the videos you made for the exams and my medicine education. I love you guys :)))
Just a little detail, I'm a first-year medical student, halfway through my second term. But, we were taught that the first thing you have to do is auscultate bowel sounds. This is something my father, who has been a doctor for over forty years, agrees with. Is this somehow different in the way you were taught? It's not a critique, it's just a question.
Regardless if, Nursing or Medical: always Auscultate before percussion & palpation, And, use the Bell of stethoscope to auscultate for bruits. Great video otherwise to grasp the gist!
Thank you for making this! I would also just like to add that we should avoid calling the exam table a bed (especially with female patients) while performing any kind of exam.
I see your point but tbf, most patients would consider it a bed and be a bit confused/disorientated if you called it an exam table. People don't lie on tables, they lie on beds. Although perhaps examination couch, if you want to avoid the word bed.
I am currently a second yar paramedic student and have studied and learned a few of your osce videos and helped me pass my osces with flying colours. Also with the arrange of illness's when on placement, has really helped me make strong impressions on patients illness's. May I ask, as my university hasn't taught us about GI examinations yet, just curious if you anyone who I can message for questions as to why you are doing certain actions or via this thread please? Thank you!. @geekymedics
Thanks sooo much i've found your channel recently while i'm preping for my exam having to do with gastrointestinal examination it's nice😅 by the way as far as i'm concerned in terms of abdominal examination we replace the palpation by the auscultation i mean after inspection performing auscultation then percution and at last palpation as it affects normal BS is that correct ? if yes there is an error in this video .again i appreciate itttt so muchhh good luck geeky medix🙏🙏🙏

Thanks for sharing our journey! 🙂
Still in final year......

THANKS
You have a brain.
Appreciated.
It's the fact thank you
I really like the example images. It really helps demonstrate what's normal and what's not.
A very informative video.

Doing my OSCE in like 2 hours so you guys are a life saver thanks x

Thank you so much Geeky medics team ! this was super useful and very well explained , keep up the great work :)
Also, have the patient bend their knees up to prevent the abdominal muscles from contracting.

How did it go
Hi ,to those who have osce exam tomorrow 😅
Today*
😭😭😭😭😭
Hi😢😂
I found this very helpful and useful especially those who will be taking OSCE this gives rationale behind everything being done. Great job!
My professor emphasized that you should start abdominal auscultation first before palpation and percussion in case that tap on abdomen affect the movement of gastrointestinal tract then affecting the sound.
This one I agree
Inspection
Auscultation
Percussion
Palpation
Excellent- this is the only video that shows what an abnormal exam would look like, thank you so much!
Hello Geeky medics- when doing an abdominal exam, the sequence is different. Inspection, Auscultation, Percussion then Palpation.
Thank you TH-cam University for giving me more knowledge
in Ethopia we do auscultatio before palpation and purcusion b/c it affect bowel sound
Yeah same here, same in Bates textbook of physical examination
Best channel for practical practice
thanks a lot for the video and the explanation
if i may add this ( we should do auscultation of the abdomen before percussion not to upset the stomach )
GOOD VIDEO. PUT LISTEN BEFORE YOU FEEL!
Great video...watching over and over again ..great explanation and hv heart sound, bowel sound and etc ..been great help...just watch over and over again for cardio, respitory, abdominal examination ...and really help me a lot..thank you geeky medic...

excellent demonstration but want to add that palpation of abdomen needs to be done while hips and knees are flexed to relax the abdominal fascia
came to say this, but no one apart from us was bothered by it... wonder why?
Just a little detail, I'm a first-year medical student, halfway through my second term. But, we were taught that the first thing you have to do is auscultate bowel sounds. This is something my father, who has been a doctor for over forty years, agrees with. Is this somehow different in the way you were taught? It's not a critique, it's just a question.
Mariajosé Isais Gutiérrez Same here as a nursing student! They’ve taught us to auscultate first and then you do percussion/ palpate
My country teaches with UK system & we use I-P-P-A for abdomen too.
Amazing Channel with Awesome content.
Good job Guys and keep it up.
Regardless if, Nursing or Medical: always Auscultate before percussion & palpation, And, use the Bell of stethoscope to auscultate for bruits. Great video otherwise to grasp the gist!
The second step should be auscultation though !
I think so, we have to do the auscultation before palpation 👌
Inspection
Palpation
Percussion
Auscultation
✌️
Uk is different system. Start from inspection, palpation, percussion then only auscultation
I like when the doctor presses on my tummy during an exam.
Do we need to flex the knees before examining the patient?
Yes
To relax the abdominal wall muscle
while percussing always lift your finger (i.e one you are tapping with) after 2 taps
Auscultate first before palpating and percussing.. because it might alter the bowel sounds upon palpating and percussing.
Great presentation, explicit explanation. very easy to follow steps. Thank you!
Thanku so much sir ..very good explanation of abdominal examination
Who else got osce exam tmr?
Me mf 😅😢😢after 4hours
In 10 minutes 😭
I freaked out when I heard the bowel sounds cuz I thought it was my tummy!!
Love abdominal exam with Dr. Outlaw,
You guys are awesome! Thanks!
Thank you for making this! I would also just like to add that we should avoid calling the exam table a bed (especially with female patients) while performing any kind of exam.
You have a point
I see your point but tbf, most patients would consider it a bed and be a bit confused/disorientated if you called it an exam table. People don't lie on tables, they lie on beds.
Although perhaps examination couch, if you want to avoid the word bed.
I love this , it’s so well done
Thank you , it was really helpful.
PS: on inspection of the abdomen you wrote Pulsations twice
May I ask why you didn't use the bell part of the stethoscope for bruit? Is it not necessary
I am currently a second yar paramedic student and have studied and learned a few of your osce videos and helped me pass my osces with flying colours. Also with the arrange of illness's when on placement, has really helped me make strong impressions on patients illness's.

SUPER helpful!!
Thanks so much for your content! 💃🏻💕🙏
Thank you so much for this!!!!
Normally, can we feel the kidneys by palpation?
no, we can not feel it unless the patient is thin.
If patient is thin we can feel the inferior ends of kidney near the 12th floating rib
Murphy sign for cholecystitis??
Excellent presentation
Dont we need to palpate spleen??By all the 3 methods??
7:04 is this the sound of his belly?
Yes, this ie your bowel sounds.
thanks I love your exams
Thank u so much! excellent!

thank you so much 💓💓
great work, go on 😍
Thanks Geeky medics👍
13th December 1989! We stan a swiftie 🎉🎉❤❤
Hmm nice but you should always auscultate before palpation and percussion as these could alter bowel sounds. Thanks all the same
Very good technique
Brilliant stuff, thank you!🙂👍
Good work
Can anyone elaborate the auscultation of abdomen, when to do ?
Inspection
Auscultation
Percussion

It was helpful thanks😊

Thank you!
Thanks James thanks Dr
Why check for acanthosis nigricans ???
It is a sign of diabetes
Is it necessary to test for fluid trill after testing for shifting dullness?
Curvin Rivoningo Mathebula fluid thrill is done when you suspect gross ascites due to distended abdomen.
only in gross ascites, fluid thrill is appreciated.
Superb
Remember to auscultate first before palpating
Thanks
Thanks a lot
Thank you sir.
Why nipple examination is necessary for abdominal examination?
very nice
