In a single person household these make perfect sense. It's just a tiny convection oven. I rarely use my full-size oven.

People buy a full sized oven that is too big.. i got a normal sized oven, heats up in 5 minutes.. a big oven its 20-30 minutes u dont want to wait that time.. but i wouldnt get a airfryer.. when i already have a good oven that does most things better (and can fit more also). It cant fit 2turkeys at the same time though but wasnt planning on that.

@@larsvegas1505 Something might be wrong with that oven that takes 20 minutes to heat up. We've got a GE 36 inch slide-in oven that heats up to 350 in 5 minutes and 400 in 6-1/2 minutes. The big difference is how much we can cook at once and how much heat will escape when turning something around or over. 1 or 2 people can make a meal in a toaster or air fryer oven easily, but for a family of 4 or more, the big oven comes in handy. So, we got one of each.

We use our air fryer every day. A few notes: the air fryer with trays is substantially easier to clean. The trays go straight into the dishwasher, unlike the basket style. We rotate the trays during cooking to ensure even cooking. And having a unit that has multiple layers allows us to cook different foods together, like chicken strips and tater tots instead of in batches.

Our drawer air fryer is easy to clean-just swish hot water in to get the main grease out, swish a squirt of dish soap and hot water to get the rest. Wipe with the dish cloth and rinse. Done. I was a holdout for a long time, but we honestly couldn’t function without it at this point. If you have kids, I think they are a must. Yes, the function is essentially the same as a convection oven, but the preheating speed and cooking speed is what makes them completely different. It’s a fraction of the time which is an incredible asset for busy weeknights.

Thank you for the information! I was genuinely baffled as to the air fryer trend (as a single professional) because waiting a few minutes for my little convection toaster oven or a little longer for my actual oven seemed like a very little sacrifice for me, a patient adult. I can completely see that being a game changer in a busy family! Thanks for sharing your perspective :)

For me “from 4-6 kids” it was too small so it made way more sense to use an oven, but I have a double oven and the top oven is smaller so it’s pretty much an XXL air fryer. By the time I had my 4th child it just doesn’t hold enough food so I’m making batch after bath which wasn’t fast at all lol. I think for smaller families air fryer is a must have but for larger ones I highly recommend a double oven.

@@KittiKatty94 It's so worth it, my husband bought one and I was I dunno, scared to use it because I had no idea about the temps and time, googled some of the items I wanted to air fry and it's not hard or scary at all, I mean in the oven something like a tater tot can take 25-30 min and in an airfryer its 9 or 10, the speedy cooking def makes it easier to use because its not some long term cooking commitment, you get your food in and out really quickly and it's so crispy!

It does what a convection oven does faster, much higher airflow, doesn't take much to preheat, and the drawer style is good for quickly 'turning' food with a quick toss.
If you're cooking small portions of food frequently, where heating a full size oven would be inefficient, slow, and overkill, air fryers are great.
If you can't imagine a use case that benefits you though, then don't bother about it.

I actually thought that it was a negative "it only cooks for 2" is a dumb argument. Not everyone has a family and don't want to heat up the entire oven for 1-2 pieces of chicken. Airfryers are just faster ovens because of their size and I'm all for that.

    @bubbalo3388 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Don't get the toaster oven style ones. 1. If you cook something like french fries you would have to carefully move them around with tongs unlike a basket design where you can shake them or move them around with tongs without them falling out. And you can take the basket out and take it to the dinner table to dump your food out if you wanted to unlike food on a rack. Also if you cook using both racks then the drippings from the top rack will drip onto the food on the bottom rack. 3. The mesh racks are more difficult to clean. 4. Drippings and crumbs fall into a shallow pan and the door creating a messy clean up. Stick with a basket type for ease of use and clean up. Most come with perforated type pans. Stay away from ones with wire type racks, they are harder to clean.
As for volume size don't do not go by that. Go by cooking surface area. You want a basket that is wide so you can spread out your food. Most foods cannot be piled on if you are going for crisp. Volume size is deceiving as these manufacturers are making larger capacity basket air fryers now. People want larger capacity air fryers but also don't want large appliances taking up counter space. So what do these manufacturers do? They make the baskets narrower and taller to compensate. So again look for ones with wide baskets to give you the most cooking surface. Also baskets with shorter sides are easier to get like a spatula into unlike one with tall sides. And forget the dual basket airfyers also. The baskets are too small for anything other than a snack.
And lastly, don't expect to cook a full meal for more than 2 or cooking a lot for a party quickly. Remember, you can't cook 6 or 7 quart of food at a time. You can only cook what you can spread out in your basket pretty much. And most things take between 10-20 minutes on average to cook. So imagine if you have to cook like 4+ baskets worth and it took that long for each batch. So if you are cooking several dishes or large quantities, it'll be faster doing it the old fashioned way instead of using an air fryer.
Is it nice to have an air fryer? Yes, but don't expect your dishes to turn out like they were deep fried. It heats up food nicely and pretty fast especially pizza and fried chicken. I would use mine more if I had room on my counter to keep it out. So take that into thought also if you plan on getting one.

So many of my friends have tried to push me to get one of these, but I just don’t see it as necessary with my setup. Both my oven and toaster oven have convection. Sure, it may take a little longer, but I just don’t want another appliance to store. I use my toaster oven 90% of the time and that does heat up within minutes. Quarter sheet pan with a rack works beautifully and don’t have to worry about the nonstick flaking off, which many of my friends have dealt with in their units. But, I understand if you don’t already have convection devices and wanted to get into that market. Just not for me.

We use our Cook's Essentials brand air fryer practically every day. It was gifted to me from my mom several years ago, but everyone can use it. I'm not sure how much it costed, but possibly around $50 or so. We also have the SuperWave Oven, from a decade ago, gifted to us from my aunt. The SuperWave is an air fryer in the days when "air fryer" was still a new concept & "air fryer" was not a commonplace word yet. The only issue with the SuperWave is that it is heavy, clunky & fragile compared to modern air fryers. That big glass dome is just waiting to slip out of someone's hands & break into a hundred pieces onto the floor, which is why we don't use it that much, but it is great for air frying whole fryers (pun?) & turkeys, as well as a backup fryer. Having said that, there is still a place for oil frying in our household when air frying cannot do a job properly. But air frying can save on the price of cooking oils, as well as electric & gas bills.

I have owned the Instant model for a year and use it every day. The only real complaint I have concerns the silicon clips that hold the frying grate in the drawer and keeping it clean. The clips began to deteriorate shortly after I first started using the oven, and getting them back in place after cleaning is difficult.
Having to do a thorough wash down of the drawer after every use becomes tedious. And grease migrates all around the cooking cavity, above and below the drawer. Especially if I cook a food that contains a lot of fat, like bacon or sausage. Making me include the chore of cleaning to my decision as to whether or not I actually want to use the fryer or not is a real factor.

I have a toaster over with frying. It's a single shelf & holds much more food. It doesn't fry as well, I suspect due to less air flow, smaller fan.
These don't really fry as well as oil. Oily things turn out quite well, tots, breaded nuggets, anything from the store in a bag. Home made items are not as good. I brush out spray things such as egg rolls with some oil, somewhat defeating the purpose but at least they aren't submerged. With oil they turn out well.
My favorite part of air frying is much less mess.

    Efficiency.
Enclosed and insulated, it uses less energy by not letting the heat escape to the open air,
keeping heat where you need it - on the food.
    That directly equals saving money.
That is the main advantage by quite a margin.
Also, an air fryer browns the food all over, more than an ordinary oven.
Brown-ness is what makes food tasty.

I cook & reheat almost everything in my air fryer. I think I've used my oven once in the past 6 months. It's pretty much replaced my microwave, too, because everything just tastes better & has a better texture when (re)heated in the AF.
When my Cosori was recalled last year, I went with this InstantPot one. It worked great, but the chemical smell was so intense I had to keep my windows open for a week with fans blowing out just to breathe. My whole apartment building smelled for a couple of months. I continued trying to "burn off" the smell as you sometimes do, but after several months and no improvement (the food tasted of chemicals, too😝), I finally donated it with a note that it worked great, but stunk, so use your discretion. I replaced it with a Gourmia with similar functions (loved the dehydrate button over the holidays - people went crazy over having healthy holiday snacking options!) & literally no smell, even straight out of the box! 8 months after the recall & Cosori finally replaced my original one, but it seems so outdated now. I am saving it for when I cook things for a very strict vegan friend that won't eat things if cooked in something that cooked meat.
So basically I need an AF, refrigerator, pressure cooker, and an electric kettle in my kitchen & that's it😄!

The Instant air fryer excels when you want to heat up a small amount of food (or a few servings of a side dish) and the food has already been prepared in some way or can be turned.
The one use case where it doesn't work that well is something like pizza, where you want to crisp the underside but you can't flip it (It does, however, make pretty dang tasty calzones). The hot air convection just can't do that without burning the top surface (an oven-style model will probably fare better). This also rules out the air fryer for a lot of baked goods like cakes, pies, and cookies that likewise have to be baked from dough or batter and can't be flipped over. If there were some way to have a piece of cast iron or pizza stone in there that can preheat and really jump start that bottom surface, that would be great. Also the capacity is great for stuff like fries and chicken, but a 9" cake pan is too big, so if you're cooking something that needs its own container, you're going to have to use something that will fit.

I’m surprised that the Gourmia model sold at Costco was not included.
For a year or two I wanted to buy myself an air fryer but in truth, I have too many gadgets so it was seeming to be just another item to use once in a while, but mostly live on the shelves with my extra Instant Pots (2), the Ninja version, which also has the air fry lid, slicers, grinders rice cookers etc.
But my son gave me a small one for a gift, which gave me a little taste of the possibilities. But it was too small for family use. He however, used it all the time. (I suspect it was one of those things I’ve been guilty of)
One day a year ago I saw the $48 Gourmia at Costco and decided for the price it would either work well or I wouldn’t mind the loss if it was junk.
    I use it daily almost.
Excellent devise for the price. I bought my mother one since it’s just her and dad, no need to heat the house to cook a couple salmon steaks or whatever.
Not a huge number of buttons to be concerned. In truth, I only use the air fry function. Timing. It’s mostly about timing. Some lower temps are available
But like my Instant Pots, most of the extra bells and whistles are (3-4yrs and still going strong) completely unnecessary.
Making yogurt? Maybe eventually, meanwhile the store bought yogurt is fine.

I'd like to hear what Hannah and Lisa have to say about the horrible fumes issue that many verified purchase reviewers have cited (go to any retailer's site to read comments). My experience ... two of my cousins had Instant Pot Vortex Plus air fryers. Both followed the instructions to do a "test" (as an engineer, I find that a horrible euphemism) to get rid of fumes, both repeated the "test" and never got rid of fumes, both returned them for refunds. I didn't know about their experiences and purchased a smaller 4-qt Vortex Plus. I had the identical problems they had! Unbelievable. I did the 17-minute "tests" about 8 times out on the deck. Always that smell of burning plastic. I also tried seasoning the pot/grate and noticed the white paper towels used to rub the oil had black discoloration! As an engineer, I suspect IP has a PTFE coating issue. Also, wiring in the fan that's directly above the heating coil could be heating up and contributing to the fumes. I returned mine.

I just went through this experience last night. The 6 qt Vortex Plus is putting off such noxious fumes that it triggered my asthma and I had to leave all the windows open overnight and put it outside. I've run it six times and it still smells like plastic/styrofoam being melted. and it seems to be coming from the plastic vent parts of the basket and emanating out the back vent. This seems like a rather wild issue for it to be the winner.

@@grownassben Very sorry to hear that. The smell is pretty nasty. My bet at this point is the fan ... and/or the wiring/electronics that are located *above* the fan ... is the culprit. The heating coil is very close to all of that. I ended up purchasing an AF with a ceramic non-stick coating from a different manufacturer. That one had a much milder smell that went away after a few uses. But its user interface isn't as nice as Instant Pot's.

Heck, Costco has one for 39 bucks. Buy one and use it for a while and if you don’t like it return it. That’s what we did and now we use our big oven 75% less I’m guessing. It crisps food much better than our convection oven and can bake a large potato in a third of the time. Now, if you’re cooking for a crowd it’s not so good. Energy savings alone must be huge.

Got one as a gift. Messy to clean, noisy, countertop space hog. After a few tries, ditched it. They are just a hot blower with limited space. Some of the recipes that came with it were stupid. Hamburgers? Bacon? Anything that needs flipping? Had to run it on the stove top otherwise it wouldn't line up with the exhaust fan. Any day give me a frying pan, an 8qt kettle (which can act as another fry pan in a pinch), a regular oven and a microwave. Only the microwave is a noise maker, but only for a couple of minutes. 15 or 20 minutes of a noisy air fryer isn't worth the results.

Just put my Philips xxl up for sale on craigs, since I got a gourmia foodstation. The depth of the basket really only mattered for whole chicken but I'd rather air fry a spatchcocked bird on the wide surface of the foodstation. So yes, you should buy my air fryer.

You missed a few concepts. 1) Air fryers are much healthier and give a very similar result. 2) there and 2 draw air fryers. InstantPot and Ninja are the best. 3) instant pot add a fryer lid to their pressure cooker. So quite a few more options which could have been included here.

I never use my air fryer. To me, a baking tray and a regular oven work great. All that's required is a little forethought about how to get the food in a state where it can brown with less fat.

Have you checked to see if your Power XL is part of their recall? I bought the dual basket Vortex last year, and there is a recall. I’m waiting on my refund. I replaced it with the Cosori Turbo Blaze, and I love it!

@lindamachado5687 I did not know about it, but I just checked and the model I have isn't on the recall list. Thank you for the heads up tho! I think this particular air fryer I ended up getting for around 40~ dollars, so I'm wondering if it's worth changing.

Bought a Cuisinart and it's great but it's renowned for providing temperature a little higher than selected. BUT that caused me to get a digital bluetooth temperature monitor. I now select a temperature 25 degrees lower than requested and I cook to internal food temperature. I don't care how long I'm supposed to cook that chicken breast because when it gets to 165F....it's done. The bluetooth version links to my smartphone and I can sit in the other room while monitoring my cooking.
