Nice head to head without comment. Good one. I have the "old" 35is and driven the 40i. Simple: the new one is better at everything but one: the emotional involvement. The old one is is just and old skool bruiser. Muscle car with topless capabilities. The new one is more refined. Leaning to sportscar / Porsche stuff. I don't want to spend the money on the new Z4. But also love the bruteness of the old one. All the statistics on faster etc don't mean shit to me. Old one is plenty fast and fun to drive. And I like the looks better.
I have the new one and agree. That said, it’s streets ahead of the my MK3 Audi TTS. The Z4 desperately needs a bit more noise so that it doesn’t sound so much like a 5 series.
tuned my 35is to 420hp - easy tune - under 4 seconds all day. Roof down driving is much better in older car as hard top weight is dropped over rear wheels so distribution and centre of gravity is awsome and noticeable. The 7 speed dct getrag in the z4 set up is better transmission and best trans I have experienced I think - better than similar year m4 in its calibration. I have the ZF in another bmw.

The old one has a much nicer Cockpit, the new one looks like a Mikey Mouse cinema. 😂 My favourite is the older one, with a stage more power (tuning).
